Background:
Cancer health research relies on large-scale cohorts to derive generalizable results for different populations. While traditional epidemiological cohorts often use costly random sampling or self-motivated, preselected groups, a shift toward health system-based cohorts has emerged. However, such cohorts depend on participants remaining within a single system. Recent consumer engagement models using smartphone-based communication, driving projects, and social media have begun to upend these paradigms.
Methods:We initiated the Healthy Oregon Project (HOP) to support basic and clinical cancer research. HOP study employs a novel, cost-effective remote recruitment approach to effectively establish a large-scale cohort for population-based studies. The recruitment leverages the unique email account, the HOP website, and social media platforms to direct smartphone users to the study app, which facilitates saliva sample collection and survey administration. Monthly newsletters further facilitate engagement and outreach to broader communities.
Results:By the end of 2022, the HOP has enrolled approximately 35,000 participants aged 18–100 years (median = 44.2 years), comprising more than 1% of the Oregon adult population. Among those who have app access, ∼87% provided consent to genetic screening. The HOP monthly email newsletters have an average open rate of 38%. Efforts continue to be made to improve survey response rates.
Conclusion:This study underscores the efficacy of remote recruitment approaches in establishing large-scale cohorts for population-based cancer studies. The implementation of the study facilitates the collection of extensive survey and biological data into a repository that can be broadly shared and supports collaborative clinical and translational research.

We present the results of an approximately 6 100 deg2 104–196 MHz radio sky survey performed with the Murchison Widefield Array during instrument commissioning between 2012 September and 2012 December: the MWACS. The data were taken as meridian drift scans with two different 32-antenna sub-arrays that were available during the commissioning period. The survey covers approximately 20.5 h < RA < 8.5 h, − 58° < Dec < −14°over three frequency bands centred on 119, 150 and 180 MHz, with image resolutions of 6–3 arcmin. The catalogue has 3 arcmin angular resolution and a typical noise level of 40 mJy beam− 1, with reduced sensitivity near the field boundaries and bright sources. We describe the data reduction strategy, based upon mosaicked snapshots, flux density calibration, and source-finding method. We present a catalogue of flux density and spectral index measurements for 14 110 sources, extracted from the mosaic, 1 247 of which are sub-components of complexes of sources.

Significant new opportunities for astrophysics and cosmology have been identified at low radio frequencies. The Murchison Widefield Array is the first telescope in the southern hemisphere designed specifically to explore the low-frequency astronomical sky between 80 and 300 MHz with arcminute angular resolution and high survey efficiency. The telescope will enable new advances along four key science themes, including searching for redshifted 21-cm emission from the EoR in the early Universe; Galactic and extragalactic all-sky southern hemisphere surveys; time-domain astrophysics; and solar, heliospheric, and ionospheric science and space weather. The Murchison Widefield Array is located in Western Australia at the site of the planned Square Kilometre Array (SKA) low-band telescope and is the only low-frequency SKA precursor facility. In this paper, we review the performance properties of the Murchison Widefield Array and describe its primary scientific objectives.

To better understand the response of oxygen vacancy concentration to applied potential, the lattice parameter of pulsed laser deposited La0.6Sr0.4Co1-xFexO3-δ thin films was monitored using in situ X-ray diffraction. We demonstrate that the chemical expansion under applied potential depends on the cathode morphology, which determines the contribution of different reaction pathways. We investigated applied potential dependent lattice expansion on La0.6Sr0.4Co1-xFexO3-δ with 3 different Co:Fe ratios in an attempt to connect bulk chemical expansion data to thin films. We find that the chemical expansion trends in thin films are different than expected from bulk data.

The far-field sound generated by compressible co-rotating vortices is computed by direct computation of the unsteady compressible Navier–Stokes equations on a computational domain that extends to two acoustic wavelengths in all directions. The vortices undergo a period of co-rotation followed by a sudden merger. The directly computed far-field sound is compared to the prediction of the acoustic analogy due to Möhring (1978, 1979), a modified form of the analogy developed by Lighthill (1952), and an acoustic analogy derived by Powell (1964). All three predictions are in excellent agreement with the simulation. Results of far-field pressure fluctuations from an acoustically non-compact, co-rotating vortex pair are also presented. In this case, the vortex sound theory over-predicts the sound by 65% in accordance with the analysis of Yates (1978).
Direct computation of the sound generated by vortex pairing in an axisymmetric jet

The sound generated by vortex pairing in axisymmetric jets is determined by direct solution of the compressible Navier–Stokes equations on a computational grid that includes both the near field and a portion of the acoustic far field. At low Mach number, the far-field sound has distinct angles of extinction in the range of 60°–70° from the jet's downstream axis which can be understood by analogy to axisymmetric, compact quadrupoles. As the Mach number is increased, the far-field sound takes on a superdirective character with the dominant sound directed at shallow angles to the jet's downstream axis. The directly computed sound is compared to predictions obtained from Lighthill's equation and the Kirchhoff surface method. These predictions are in good agreement with the directly computed data. The Lighthill source terms have a large spatial distribution in the axial direction necessitating the introduction of a model to describe the source terms in the region downstream of the last vortex pairing. The axial non-compactness of the quadrupole sources must be adequately treated in the prediction method.

A wide range of models have been proposed to account for low-frequency (≲ 1 GHz) variability in cosmologically-distant radio sources. To address these models we (Payne et al. 1982) are monitoring the 0.3–1.4 GHz spectra of such sources. Results from three years of monitoring indicate that two distinct types of low-frequency variables may exist.
