Examining competition during the agnathan/gnathostome transition using distance-based morphometrics

The rise of jawed vertebrates (gnathostomes) and extinction of nearly all jawless vertebrates (agnathans) is one of the most important transitions in vertebrate evolution, but the causes are poorly understood. Competition between agnathans and gnathostomes during the Devonian period is the most commonly hypothesized cause; however, no formal attempts to test this hypothesis have been made. Generally, competition between species increases as morphological similarity increases; therefore, this study uses the largest to date morphometric comparison of Silurian and Devonian agnathan and gnathostome groups to determine which groups were most and least likely to have competed. Five agnathan groups (Anaspida, Heterostraci, Osteostraci, Thelodonti, and Furcacaudiformes) were compared with five gnathostome groups (Acanthodii, Actinopterygii, Chondrichthyes, Placodermi, and Sarcopterygii) including taxa from most major orders. Morphological dissimilarity was measured by Gower's dissimilarity coefficient, and the differences between agnathan and gnathostome body forms across early vertebrate morphospace were compared using principal coordinate analysis. Our results indicate competition between some agnathans and gnathostomes is plausible, but not all agnathan groups were similar to gnathostomes. Furcacaudiformes (fork-tailed thelodonts) are distinct from other early vertebrate groups and the least likely to have competed with other groups.
Vapor Movement of Synthetic Auxin Herbicides: Aminocyclopyrachlor, Aminocyclopyrachlor-Methyl Ester, Dicamba, and Aminopyralid

Aminocyclopyrachlor, a newly discovered synthetic auxin herbicide, and its methyl ester, appear to control a number of perennial broadleaf weeds. The potential volatility of this new herbicide and its methyl ester were determined under laboratory conditions and were also compared to dicamba and aminopyralid with the use of enclosed chamber and open-air plant bioassays. Bioassays consisting of visual estimates of epinastic responses and kidney bean and soybean leaf-width measurements were developed to measure vapor release from glass and plastic. Vapor release of aminocyclopyrachlor from glass surfaces was undetectable under laboratory conditions, and no phytotoxic responses were observed when plants were exposed to vapors emanating from various surfaces. Results were similar to those of aminopyralid, indicating the risk of plant injury from vapor movement of aminocyclopyrachlor and aminopyralid was very low. When combined with 1% methylated seed oil, vapor release of aminocyclopyrachlor-methyl ester reached 86% 192 h after application to glass surfaces. Phytotoxic responses of plants exposed to vapors emanating from various surfaces treated with aminocyclopyrachlor-methyl ester were similar to responses to dicamba under enclosed incubation conditions, but were less in outdoor, open-air environments. Studies are needed to understand better the risk of injury to nontarget plants due to vapor movement of aminocyclopyrachlor-methyl ester under field applications.
Absorption and Translocation of Aminocyclopyrachlor and Aminocyclopyrachlor-Methyl Ester in Canada Thistle (Cirsium arvense)

Laboratory studies were conducted using 14C-aminocyclopyrachlor (DPX-MAT28) and its 14C-methyl ester formulation (DPX-KJM44) to (1) determine the adjuvants' effects on absorption, (2) compare the absorption and translocation of aminocyclopyrachlor free acid with the methyl ester, and (3) determine the rate at which aminocyclopyrachlor-methyl ester is metabolized to the free acid in Canada thistle. Canada thistle plants were grown from root cuttings and treated in the rosette growth stage. The effect of different adjuvants on absorption was determined by treating individual leaves with formulated herbicide plus 14C-herbicide alone or with methylated seed oil (MSO), crop oil concentrate, or nonionic surfactant with and without urea ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate. Plants were harvested 96 h after treatment (HAT). For absorption and translocation experiments, plants were oversprayed with aminocyclopyrachlor or its methyl ester at a rate of 0.14 kg ae ha−1 in combination with 1% MSO. Formulated herbicide plus 14C-herbicide was then applied to a protected leaf, and plants were harvested 24 to 192 HAT. Plants were harvested and radioactivity was determined in the treated leaf and in aboveground and belowground tissues. Metabolism of aminocyclopyrachlor-methyl ester to the free acid was determined 2, 6, and 24 HAT. All aboveground biomass was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography to establish the ratio of methyl ester to free acid. MSO applied with either herbicide formulation resulted in the highest absorption compared with no surfactant. Significantly greater aminocyclopyrachlor-methyl ester was absorbed, compared with the free acid, which was reflected in the greater aboveground translocation for the methyl ester. Both formulations had similar amounts of translocation to the roots, with 8.6% (SE ± 3.3) for the methyl ester compared with 6.2% (SE ± 2.5) for the free acid. Approximately 80% of the methyl ester was converted to the free acid at 6 HAT. Based on this conversion rate, aminocyclopyrachlor translocated as the free acid in Canada thistle.

Field bindweed is extremely susceptible to aminocyclopyrachlor compared to other weed species. Laboratory studies were conducted to determine if absorption, translocation, and metabolism of aminocyclopyrachlor in field bindweed differs from other, less susceptible species. Field bindweed plants were treated with 3.3 kBq 14C-aminocyclopyrachlor by spotting a single leaf mid-way up the stem with 10 µl of herbicide solution. Plants were then harvested at set intervals over 192 h after treatment (HAT). Aminocyclopyrachlor absorption reached a maximum of 48.3% of the applied radioactivity by 48 HAT. A translocation pattern of herbicide movement from the treated leaf into other plant tissues emerged, revealing a nearly equal aminocyclopyrachlor distribution between the treated leaf, aboveground tissue, and belowground tissue of 13, 14, and 14% of the applied radioactivity by 192 HAT. Over the time-course, no soluble aminocyclopyrachlor metabolites were observed, but there was an increase in radioactivity recovered bound in the nonsoluble fraction. These results suggest that aminocyclopyrachlor has greater translocation to belowground plant tissue in field bindweed compared with results from other studies with other herbicides and other weed species, which could explain the increased level of control observed in the field. The lack of soluble metabolites also suggests that very little metabolism occurred over the 192 h time course.

Utility of computed tomographic angiography in the pre-operative planning for initial and repeat congenital cardiovascular surgery

Objective
To investigate the utility of computed tomographic angiography as an adjunctive imaging modality before congenital cardiac surgery.
DesignWe evaluated 33 patients who underwent a pre-operative computed tomographic angiogram. They were classified according to the anatomic site of repair. Post-operatively, the surgeon completed a questionnaire assessing the utility of the study.
ResultsComputed tomographic angiography was found to be either “essential” or “very useful” for pre-operative planning in 94% of the patients. Specifically, the scan was consistently useful for procedures involving the aorta (14/15, 93%) or the pulmonary veins (4/4, 100%) and obviated pre-operative catheterisations in 14 patients (42%). Furthermore, when compared with other diagnostic groups, computed tomographic angiography determined the need for peripheral cannulation in patients undergoing re-operations (6/7; 86%, p = 0.02).
ConclusionsComputed tomographic angiography was found to be useful in the pre-operative planning of virtually all patients undergoing repair of congenital cardiac malformations, regardless of diagnosis. Specifically, the studies were essential in select populations, such aortic arch or pulmonary vein repairs, and helped to determine cannulation sites for repeat operations while significantly reducing the need for invasive imaging.

Objectives: Our study evaluates hospital survival following prenatal identification of candidates for the Norwood procedure, and the impact of prenatal diagnosis on survival, preoperative stability, and postoperative morbidity. Methods: We reviewed records of all patients who were identified prenatally as candidates for the Norwood procedure, and compared them to all postnatally diagnosed patients who underwent the Norwood procedure between August 1995 and May 2002. Results: Of the 98 patients studied, 45 (46%) were diagnosed prenatally. Of these, 35 underwent the Norwood procedure, 29 (83%) of who survived. Thus, 29 of 45 (64%) patients survived from prenatal diagnosis to discharge following the Norwood procedure. Of the 53 postnatally diagnosed patients who underwent the Norwood procedure, 42 (79%) survived. Prenatal diagnosis was not associated with improvement in survival, preoperative stability, or postoperative morbidity. By multivariate analysis, ascending aortic diameter equal to or greater than 2 mm (p = 0.01), and gestational age 36 weeks or greater (p = 0.01) independently predicted survival. Based on this, patients were stratified into groups at low risk, consisting of 69 patients, and at high risk, consisting of 19 patients. Prenatal diagnosis was unassociated with improved survival in either group. Results were unchanged when the analysis was restricted to patients with hypoplasia of the left heart. Conclusion: From the time of prenatal diagnosis, 64% of patients survived to discharge following the Norwood procedure. Prenatal diagnosis did not affect preoperative stability, survival or postoperative morbidity. This remained the case after stratifying patients by risk, or restricting analysis to patients with hypoplasia of the left heart. Ascending aortic diameter and gestational age independently predicted survival.
The ability of wheat cultivars to withstand drought in UK conditions: formation of grain yield

Experiments in three dry years, 1993/94, 1994/95 and 1995/96, on a medium sand at ADAS Gleadthorpe, England, tested responses of six winter wheat cultivars to irrigation of dry-matter growth, partitioning of dry matter to leaf, stem and ear throughout the season, and to grain at final harvest. Cultivars (Haven, Maris Huntsman, Mercia, Rialto, Riband and Soissons) were selected for contrasts in flowering date and stem soluble carbohydrate. Maximum soil moisture deficit (SMD) exceeded 140 mm in all years, with large deficits (>75 mm) from early June in 1994 and from May in 1995 and 1996. The main effects of drought on partitioning of biomass were for a decrease in the proportion of the crop as lamina in the pre-flowering period, and then earlier retranslocation of stem reserves to grains during the first half of grain filling. Restricted water availability decreased grain yield by 1·83 t/ha in 1994 (P<0·05), and with more prolonged droughts, by 3·06 t/ha in 1995 (P<0·001) and by 4·55 t/ha in 1996 (P<0·001). Averaged over the three years, grain yield responses of the six cultivars differed significantly (P<0·05). Rialto and Mercia lost only 2·8 t/ha compared with Riband and Haven which lost 3·5 t/ha. Losses for Soissons and Maris Huntsman were intermediate. In the two years with prolonged drought, the biomass depression was on average greater for Haven (6·0 t/ha) than for Maris Huntsman (4·2 t/ha) (P<0·05). Thus, the grain yield sensitivity of Haven to drought derived, in part, from a sensitivity of biomass growth to drought. Harvest index (HI; ratio of grain to above-ground dry matter at harvest) responses of the six cultivars to irrigation also differed (P<0·05) and contributed to the yield responses. The smallest decrease in HI of the six cultivars with restricted water availability was shown by Rialto (−0·033); this partially explained the drought resistance for this cultivar. The largest decrease was for Maris Huntsman (−0·072). The cultivars differed in flowering dates by up to 9 days but these were poorly correlated with grain yield responses to irrigation. Stem soluble carbohydrate at flowering varied amongst cultivars from 220 to 300 g/m2 in the unirrigated crop; greater accumulation appeared to be associated with better maintenance of HI under drought. It is concluded that high stem-soluble carbohydrate reserves could be used to improve drought resistance in the UK's temperate climate, but that early flowering seems less likely to be useful.

Experiments in three dry seasons (1993/94, 1994/95, 1995/96) on a loamy medium sand at ADAS Gleadthorpe, Nottinghamshire, England tested responses of green area, radiation interception, water uptake and above-ground dry matter growth of six wheat cultivars to irrigation. Cultivars differing in date of introduction (Haven 1987, Maris Huntsman 1969, Mercia 1983, Rialto 1991, Riband 1985 and Soissons 1989) were chosen for contrast in flowering time and maximum green area. Maximum soil moisture deficit (SMD) exceeded 140 mm in all years, with large deficits (> 75 mm) from early June in 1994 and more prolonged large deficits in 1995 and 1996. Restricted water availability first affected canopy expansion at a SMD of 74 mm (50% available water capacity; AW), and canopy senescence at 95 mm (64% AW). Decreases in biomass at harvest were larger with prolonged droughts in 1995 and 1996 (424–562 g/m2) than in 1994 (222 g/m2). Compared in the two driest years, 1995 and 1996, the decrease in biomass was greater in Haven (599 g/m2) than in Maris Huntsman (420 g/m2) (P < 0·05). The better drought resistance of Maris Huntsman appeared to arise through its greater water use efficiency (WUE); 6·2 cf. 5·5–5·7 g/m2/mm. The susceptibility of Haven to drought was possibly due to restricted water uptake, depression of radiation use efficiency (RUE) and accelerated senescence. The cultivars differed in flowering by up to 9 days but date of flowering correlated poorly with biomass response to irrigation. Early flowering was, however, correlated with favourable distribution of seasonal water use with respect to the grain filling period. The maximum green area index (GAI) of cultivars varied from 4·4 to 5·3 (P < 0·01), but differences were countered by shifts in the extinction coefficient (K), such that season-long radiation interception varied little. Green area index maxima did not therefore relate to the pattern of growth or water use, and they were correlated poorly with the biomass responses. Cultivars did not differ in their maximum depth of water extraction; they all extracted water to 1·65 m depth in each year. It is concluded that early flowering and high WUE might offer scope for improving drought resistance in the UK's temperate climate, but that small maximum GAI seems less useful.
An approach to modelling the effect of environmental and physiological factors upon biomass accumulation in winter wheat

Six sites of variable soil type and environments in England and Scotland were sown with winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Mercia) in the autumns of 1992 and 1993 with optimum inputs for growth. Crop monitoring between February and grain maturity provided data to investigate environmental and physiological factors important in controlling biomass accumulation.
With increasing use of crop modelling as a tool for interpreting experiments and as crop management decision support systems, it is important that all influences on crop productivity are understood. The ‘radiation use efficiency’ or radiation conversion coefficient provides a convenient basis to study these influences.
Significant differences in seasonal radiation conversion coefficients were observed between sites (P < 0·001), ranging from 2·82 to 3·87 g total dry matter/MJ absorbed photosynthetically active radiation. A series of simple dry matter models were developed to help explain biomass accumulation in relation to a number of environmental variables (using the measured green area index as an input) with correlation coefficients [ges ] 0·98 obtained across all sites. Apart from sunlight, differences in the canopy's ability to accumulate nitrogen and maintenance respiration costs were the most significant factors (P < 0·001). The nitrogen effect suggests changes in the conversion of assimilates with nitrogen availability, despite relatively high nutrition levels ([ges ] 180 kg N/ha).
Over all sites the canopy extinction coefficient could be described as a linear function of the site spring time plant population (P < 0·01). A more detailed model considered canopy light attenuation to vary between sites according to sowing date and autumn/winter plant establishment and environment.
Dynamics of nitrogen capture without fertilizer: the baseline for fertilizing winter wheat in the UK

Experiments at three sites in 1993, six sites in 1994 and eight sites in 1995, mostly after oilseed rape, tested effects of previous fertilizer N (differing by 200 kg/ha for 1993 and 1994 and 300 kg/ha for 1995) and date of sowing (differing by about 2 months) on soil mineral N and N uptake by winter wheat cv. Mercia which received no fertilizer N. Soil mineral N to 90 cm plus crop N (‘soil N supply’; SNS) in February was 103 and 76 kg/ha after large and small amounts of previous fertilizer N respectively but was not affected by date of sowing. Previous fertilizer N seldom affected crop N in spring because sowing was too late for N capture during autumn, but it did affect soil mineral N, particularly in the 60–90 cm soil horizon, presumably due to over-winter leaching. Tillering generally occurred in spring, and was delayed but not diminished by later sowing. Previous fertilizer N increased shoot survival more than it increased shoot production. Final shoot number was affected by previous fertilizer N, but not by date of sowing. Overall, there were 29 surviving tillers/g SNS.
N uptakes at fortnightly intervals from spring to harvest at two core sites were described well by linear rates. The difference between sowings in the fitted date with 10 kg/ha crop N was 1 month; these dates were not significantly affected by previous fertilizer. N uptake rates were increased by both previous fertilizer N and late sowing. Rates of N uptake related closely to soil mineral N in February such that ‘equivalent recovery’ was achieved in late May or early June. At one site there was evidence that most of the residue from previous fertilizer N had moved below 90 cm by February, but N uptake was nevertheless increased. Two further ‘satellite’ sites behaved similarly. Thus at 14 out of 17 sites, N uptake until harvest related directly and with approximate parity to soil mineral N in February (R2 = 0·79), a significant intercept being in keeping with an atmospheric contribution of 20–40 kg/ha N at all sites.
It is concluded that, on retentive soils in the UK, SNS in early spring was a good indicator of N availability throughout growth of unfertilized wheat, because the N residues arising from previous fertilizer mineralized before analysis, yet remained largely within root range. The steady rates of soil mineral N recovery were taken as being dependent on progressively deeper root development. Thus, even if soil mineral N equated with a crop's N requirement, fresh fertilizer applications might be needed before ‘equivalent recovery’ of soil N, to encourage the earlier processes of tiller production and canopy expansion. The later process of grain filling was sustained by continued N uptake (mean 41 kg/ha) coming apparently from N leached to the subsoil (relating to previous fertilizer use) as well as from sources not related to previous fertilizer use; significant net mineralization was apparent in some subsoils.
Simple winter wheat green area index model under UK conditions

A simple model of canopy expansion and senescence with accumulated thermal time from sowing was used to describe differences in canopy development and potential size across a range of sites in the UK between 1992 and 1995. The principal model inputs were nitrogen, temperature and sowing date. The model was calibrated across six sites within the major wheat growing areas using canopy data collected during the 1992/93 and 1993/94 growing seasons and was validated using data collected in the 1994/95 season. The model was able to predict the time course of green area index (GAI) over a season with an r2[ges ]0·87 for the five English sites, and an r2=0·68 for the single Scottish site. This model may prove to be a useful approach to forecasting the potential canopy size, based upon an estimate or measure of the total nitrogen available to the crop (both from applied fertilizer and the soil).
Emotional arousal and activation of the visual cortex: An fMRI analysis

Functional activity in the visual cortex was assessed using functional magnetic resonance imaging technology while participants viewed a series of pleasant, neutral, or unpleasant pictures. Coronal images at four different locations in the occipital cortex were acquired during each of eight 12-s picture presentation periods (on) and 12-s interpicture interval (off ). The extent of functional activation was larger in the right than the left hemisphere and larger in the occipital than in the occipitoparietal regions during processing of all picture contents compared with the interpicture intervals. More importantly, functional activity was significantly greater in all sampled brain regions when processing emotional (pleasant or unpleasant) pictures than when processing neutral stimuli. In Experiment 2, a hypothesis that these differences were an artifact of differential eye movements was ruled out. Whereas both emotional and neutral pictures produced activity centered on the calcarine fissure (Area 17), only emotional pictures also produced sizable clusters bilaterally in the occipital gyrus, in the right fusiform gyrus, and in the right inferior and superior parietal lobules.
Evidence for differences between winter wheat cultivars in acquisition of soil mineral nitrogen and uptake and utilization of applied fertilizer nitrogen

The response of cultivars to applied nitrogen was examined in 11 seasons, 1982–92, in two experiments per year, normally testing seven cultivars at seven rates of fertilizer nitrogen. In all, 27 cultivars were tested in 22 experiments throughout Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Suffolk. Cultivars ranged in their date of introduction from Maris Huntsman (1969) to Hereward (1988). For each cultivar in each experiment, the economic optimum yield (Yopt), the amount of fertilizer N needed to produce it (Nopt), the grain %N at Nopt, the offtake of N in the grain at nil N (Noff(N0)) and Nopt (Noff(opt)) and the estimated recovery of fertilizer in the grain at Nopt (AFRopt) were estimated by fitting linear plus exponential curves to data for grain yield and two-straight-line models to data for grain N offtake. From cross-site analysis, normalized cultivar means were calculated for each variate. Over the 20-year period relating to the cultivars in the trial, the contribution of new genotypes to grain yield improvement was 1·92 t/ha, Yopt increasing by 96 kg/ha per year. There was no change in grain %N at Nopt. The effect of changes through breeding from 1969 to 1988 was to increase Noff(opt) by 42 kg/ha (2·1 kg/ha per year), that was associated with a decrease in Noff(N0) (equivalent of soil N offtake) of 15 kg/ha (0·77 kg/ha per year). Part of the increased requirement for fertilizer N was fulfilled by an increase in AFRopt of 18% over the 20-year period. The net effect was for Nopt itself to increase by 56 kg/ha (2·8 kg/ha per year). Since survey evidence indicates no general increase in N use on wheat by farmers since the mid-1980s, it appears that current fertilizer use by farmers may be underestimating the requirement for N now. Alternatively in previous years N requirements may have been overestimated. The change in N available for loss to the environment, from the balance of grain Noff(opt) and Nopt, was from 11 kg N/ha in 1969 compared to 25 kg N/ha in 1988. It seems possible that the potential increase in nitrate levels in groundwater associated with plant type may not have been realised because farmers have conserved the amount of N they use.
Prediction of leaf and internode development in wheat

Functions which predict rate of leaf emergence and final number of leaves, used in a model to predict the date at which growth stages occur, were tested in an experiment on winter wheat cv. Mercia grown with standardized husbandry at six sites in 1992/93, 1993/94 and 1994/95. A study of the number of detectable nodes on the culm and leaf length was also made.
The predicted rate of leaf emergence was mostly within 5% of the observed value. The difference between observed and predicted final number of leaves was mostly less than half a leaf but suspected errors in leaf counts resulted in some differences of more than two leaves.
Variable extension of the basal internode impaired confidence in the detection of nodes. The mean number of detectable nodes differed significantly among sites and between seasons from 3·7 to 4·8 but could not be related to sowing date or final number of leaves. Further information on factors affecting extension of the basal internode is desirable to standardize node detection and improve prediction of culm leaf appearance.
Culm leaves showed successively longer laminae up to the penultimate leaf. There was a significant relationship between length of the flag leaf and the final number of leaves, but it was positive in 1993/94 and negative in 1994/95. This may have been due to greater water stress in 1994/95.
