A machine learning model was created to predict the electron spectrum generated by a GeV-class laser wakefield accelerator. The model was constructed from variational convolutional neural networks, which mapped the results of secondary laser and plasma diagnostics to the generated electron spectrum. An ensemble of trained networks was used to predict the electron spectrum and to provide an estimation of the uncertainty of that prediction. It is anticipated that this approach will be useful for inferring the electron spectrum prior to undergoing any process that can alter or destroy the beam. In addition, the model provides insight into the scaling of electron beam properties due to stochastic fluctuations in the laser energy and plasma electron density.

This paper provides evidence of appreciable amounts of Zn (up to 0.52 a.p.f.u.) residing in the crystal structure of trioctahedral vermiculite; the results were obtained by a combination of experimental methods (X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, electron microprobe analysis and selective chemical extractions) and theoretical studies based on density functional theory (DFT). Vermiculite occurs in size fractions ranging from 10 to 40 μm of near-neutral soils naturally enriched in Zn (up to 8110 mg kg–1) due to the weathering of carbonate-hosted Zn-Pb deposits in SW Spain. Zinc was partitioned among the various pedogenic phases during soil formation, but the larger part (>80%) was concentrated in the residual silicate fraction. The soil exchangeable Zn pool was found to be virtually negligible. The DFT calculations support the hypothesis that the role of vermiculite is an effective sink for geogenic Zn; this is consistent, in terms of energetic stability, with the assumption that most Zn is structurally bound in octahedral sheets rather than in the interlayer exchange sites. The findings conclusively indicate that the potential mobility of Zn should remain low under the present soil conditions.

Background: In the elderly population, use of antithrombotic therapy (AT), antiplatelets (AP – aspirin, clopidogrel) and/or anticoagulants (AC – warfarin, DoAC – Dabigatran, Rivaroxaban, Apixaban), to prevent thrombo-embolic events must be carefully weighed against the risk of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) with trauma. We hypothesize that for all patients 65yro+ with head trauma, those on AT will be more likely to sustain a traumatic brain injury, ICH, and poorer outcomes. Methods: Data was collected from all head trauma patients 65yo+ presenting to our tertiary trauma center (level 1) over a 24-month period; age, gender, injury mechanism, medications, International Normalized Ratio, reversal therapy, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), ICH, surgery, Extended Glasgow Outcome Scale score (GOSE) and mortality. Results: 1365 patients were identified; 724 on AT (413 AP, 151 AC, 59 DoAC, 48 2AP, 38 AP+AC, 15 AP+DoAC) and 474 not (non-AT). When adjusted for covariates, AT patients were more likely to have ICH (p=0.0004), more invasive surgical interventions (p=0.0188), functional dependency (GOSE≤4; p<0.0001) and mortality (p<0.0001). Risk of mortality is notably high with 2AP (OR 5.74; p=0.0003) and AC+AP (OR 4.12; p=0.0118). Conclusions: Elderly trauma patients on AT, especially combination therapy, have higher risks of ICH and poorer outcomes compared to those who are not.

Expert judgement is frequently used within general insurance. It tends to be a method of last resort and used where data is sparse, non-existent or non-applicable to the problem under consideration. Whilst such judgements can significantly influence the end results, their quality is highly variable. The use of the term “expert judgement” itself can lend a generous impression of credibility to what may be a little more than a guess. Despite the increased emphasis placed on the importance of robust expert judgements in regulation, actuarial research to date has focussed on the more technical or data-driven methods, with less emphasis on how to use and incorporate softer information or how best to elicit judgements from others in a way that reduces cognitive biases. This paper highlights the research that the Getting Better Judgement Working Party has conducted in this area. Specifically, it covers the variable quality of expert judgement, both within and outside the regulatory context, and presents methods that may be applied to improve its formation. The aim of this paper is to arm the insurance practitioner with tools to distinguish between low-quality and high-quality judgements and improve the robustness of judgements accordingly, particularly for highly material circumstances.

Background: The Canadian Stroke Best Practice recommends admission of patients to a specialised stroke unit within three hours. We aimed at assessing delays in our emergency department (ED) and correlating these with medical complications and clinical outcomes. Methods: Predictors and outcomes This is a retrospective review of patients (n=353) admitted with ischemic strokes (January 2011-March 2014). We assessed the length of stay in ED, medical complications in ED and in the stroke unit, functional status (modified Rankin Scale) at discharge and survival. Results: The median delay in ED was 13.8 hours. The rate of medical complications in the ED was 14% (most common being delirium), compared to the stroke unit with 46.7% (most common being pneumonia). Worse functional outcome was correlated with diagnosis of pneumonia (standardised β coefficient=0.2, p=0.001) and presence of brain oedema in the stroke unit (standardised β coefficient=0.2, p<0.01). Increased risk of death was correlated with brain oedema (OR=649.2, 95%CI=19-2184, p<0.01) and sepsis in the stroke unit (OR=26.8, 95%CI=2.1-339, p<0.01). Conclusions: We found a significant delay in the admission of our patients from the ED to the stroke unit, which is not in keeping with the present guidelines. Medical complications were correlated with worse outcomes. Future analyses will correlate ED delays with clinical outcomes.

The Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90 GHz (MALT90) survey aims to characterise the physical and chemical evolution of high-mass star-forming clumps. Exploiting the unique broad frequency range and on-the-fly mapping capabilities of the Australia Telescope National Facility Mopra 22 m single-dish telescope1, MALT90 has obtained 3′ × 3′ maps towards ~2 000 dense molecular clumps identified in the ATLASGAL 870 μm Galactic plane survey. The clumps were selected to host the early stages of high-mass star formation and to span the complete range in their evolutionary states (from prestellar, to protostellar, and on to
$\mathrm{H\,{\scriptstyle {II}}}$ regions and photodissociation regions). Because MALT90 mapped 16 lines simultaneously with excellent spatial (38 arcsec) and spectral (0.11 km s−1) resolution, the data reveal a wealth of information about the clumps’ morphologies, chemistry, and kinematics. In this paper we outline the survey strategy, observing mode, data reduction procedure, and highlight some early science results. All MALT90 raw and processed data products are available to the community. With its unprecedented large sample of clumps, MALT90 is the largest survey of its type ever conducted and an excellent resource for identifying interesting candidates for high-resolution studies with ALMA.

The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) will give us an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the transient sky at radio wavelengths. In this paper we present VAST, an ASKAP survey for Variables and Slow Transients. VAST will exploit the wide-field survey capabilities of ASKAP to enable the discovery and investigation of variable and transient phenomena from the local to the cosmological, including flare stars, intermittent pulsars, X-ray binaries, magnetars, extreme scattering events, interstellar scintillation, radio supernovae, and orphan afterglows of gamma-ray bursts. In addition, it will allow us to probe unexplored regions of parameter space where new classes of transient sources may be detected. In this paper we review the known radio transient and variable populations and the current results from blind radio surveys. We outline a comprehensive program based on a multi-tiered survey strategy to characterise the radio transient sky through detection and monitoring of transient and variable sources on the ASKAP imaging timescales of 5 s and greater. We also present an analysis of the expected source populations that we will be able to detect with VAST.

A survey of the Milky Way disk and the Magellanic System at the wavelengths of the 21-cm atomic hydrogen (H i) line and three 18-cm lines of the OH molecule will be carried out with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope. The survey will study the distribution of H i emission and absorption with unprecedented angular and velocity resolution, as well as molecular line thermal emission, absorption, and maser lines. The area to be covered includes the Galactic plane (|b| < 10°) at all declinations south of δ = +40°, spanning longitudes 167° through 360°to 79° at b = 0°, plus the entire area of the Magellanic Stream and Clouds, a total of 13 020 deg2. The brightness temperature sensitivity will be very good, typically σT≃ 1 K at resolution 30 arcsec and 1 km s−1. The survey has a wide spectrum of scientific goals, from studies of galaxy evolution to star formation, with particular contributions to understanding stellar wind kinematics, the thermal phases of the interstellar medium, the interaction between gas in the disk and halo, and the dynamical and thermal states of gas at various positions along the Magellanic Stream.

Background
Emotion dysregulation is a key feature of schizophrenia, a brain disorder strongly associated with genetic risk and aberrant dopamine signalling. Dopamine is inactivated by catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), whose gene contains a functional polymorphism (COMT Val158Met) associated with differential activity of the enzyme and with brain physiology of emotion processing. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether genetic risk for schizophrenia and COMT Val158Met genotype interact on brain activity during implicit and explicit emotion processing.
MethodA total of 25 patients with schizophrenia, 23 healthy siblings of patients and 24 comparison subjects genotyped for COMT Val158Met underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging during implicit and explicit processing of facial stimuli with negative emotional valence.
ResultsWe found a main effect of diagnosis in the right amygdala, with decreased activity in patients and siblings compared with control subjects. Furthermore, a genotype × diagnosis interaction was found in the left middle frontal gyrus, such that the effect of genetic risk for schizophrenia was evident in the context of the Val/Val genotype only, i.e. the phenotype of reduced activity was present especially in Val/Val patients and siblings. Finally, a complete inversion of the COMT effect between patients and healthy subjects was found in the left striatum during explicit processing.
ConclusionsOverall, these results suggest complex interactions between genetically determined dopamine signalling and risk for schizophrenia on brain activity in the prefrontal cortex during emotion processing. On the other hand, the effects in the striatum may represent state-related epiphenomena of the disorder itself.

Enhanced Loran (eLoran) is currently being implemented to provide back up to global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) in many critical and essential applications. In order to accomplish this, eLoran needs to provide a high level of availability throughout its desired coverage area. While the current Loran system is generally capable of accomplishing this, worldwide, there remain a number of known areas where improved coverage is desirable or necessary. One example is in the middle of the continental United States where the transmitter density is not adequate for providing the desired availability for applications such as aviation in some parts. This paper examines the use of lower power, existing assets such as differential GPS (DGPS) and Ground Wave Emergency Network (GWEN) stations to enhance coverage and fill these gaps. Two areas covered by the paper are the feasibility and performance benefits of using the antennas at these sites.
Using DGPS, GWEN or other existing low frequency (LF) broadcast towers requires the consideration of several factors. The first is the ability of the transmitting equipment to efficiently broadcast on these antennas, which are significantly shorter than those at a Loran station. Recent tests at the US Coast Guard Loran Support Unit (LSU) demonstrated the performance of a more efficient transmitter. This technology allows for the effective use of smaller antennas at lower power levels. Second is the ability to broadcast a navigation signal that is compatible with the Loran system and the potential DPGS broadcast (when using a DGPS antenna). The paper examines some possibilities for navigation signals. The goal is to develop a suitable low power signal that enhances navigation and is feasible for the transmission system.
The second part of the paper examines the benefits of using these stations. The benefits depend on the location of the stations and the ability seamlessly to integrate them within the existing Loran infrastructure. Analysis of these factors is presented and the coverage benefits are examined.

The literature of human infection with Salmonella choleraesuis in China was fully reviewed with special reference to those written in Chinese language which are inaccessible to many readers. Compared with other regions of the world the ratio of S. choleraesuis to other salmonella infection in Hong Kong is high and is parallel to that in China. Dietetic habits of the local population apparently contribute to the high incidence. The clinical manifestations of 47 cases were outlined and details of the biochemical reactions and in vitro drug sensitivities of these strains were described. Two diphasic H2S-positive strains were encountered.
