Our aim was to examine mental health needs and access to mental healthcare services among Syrian refugees in the city of Leipzig, Germany. We conducted a cross-sectional survey with Syrian refugee adults in Leipzig, Germany in 2021/2022. Outcomes included PTSD (PCL-5), depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7) and somatic symptom (SSS-8). Descriptive, regression and effect modification analyses assessed associations between selected predictor variables and mental health service access. The sampling strategy means findings are applicable only to Syrian refugees in Leipzig. Of the 513 respondents, 18.3% had moderate/severe anxiety symptoms, 28.7% had moderate/severe depression symptoms, and 25.3% had PTSD symptoms. A total of 52.8% reported past year mental health problems, and 48.9% of those participants sought care for these problems. The most common reasons for not accessing mental healthcare services were wanting to handle the problem themselves and uncertainty about where to access services. Adjusted Poisson regression models (n = 259) found significant associations between current mental health symptoms and mental healthcare service access (RR: 1.47, 95% CI: 1.02–2.15, p = 0.041) but significance levels were not reached between somatization and trust in physicians with mental healthcare service access. Syrian refugees in Leipzig likely experience high unmet mental health needs. Community-based interventions for refugee mental health and de-stigmatization activities are needed to address these unmet needs in Leipzig.

Massive infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are believed to be the precursors to star clusters and massive stars (e.g. Bergin & Tafalla 2007). The supersonic, turbulent nature of molecular clouds in the presence of magnetic fields poses a great challenge in understanding the structure and dynamics of magnetized molecular clouds and the star formation therein. Using the high-order radiation-magneto-hydrodynamic adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) code ORION2 (Li et al. 2012), we perform a large-scale driven-turbulence simulation to reveal the 3D filamentary structure and dynamical state of a highly supersonic (thermal Mach number = 10) and strongly magnetized (plasma β=0.02) massive infrared dark molecular cloud. With the high resolution afforded by AMR, we follow the dynamical evolution of the cloud in order to understand the roles of strong magnetic fields, turbulence, and self-gravity in shaping the cloud and in the formation of dense cores.

Pentacene thin films were grown in ultra high vacuum on amorphous SiO2 and on a high dielectric constant material, crystalline BaTiO3. During pentacene deposition, substrates were held at three different temperatures (-650, 250 and 750 C). In general, three different morphologies were identified: a first closed interfacial layer, a thin film mode composed of faceted grains with single molecule step height, and a volume mode with features substantially higher than those of the thin film mode. Analysis was carried out by atomic force microscopy and in some cases by synchrotron X-ray diffraction.

The effects of elevated concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide and ozone on diurnal patterns of photosynthesis have been investigated in field-grown spring wheat (Triticum aestivum). Plants cultivated under realistic agronomic conditions, in open-top chambers, were exposed from emergence to harvest to reciprocal combinations of two carbon dioxide and two ozone treatments: [CO2] at ambient (380 μmol mol−1, seasonal mean) or elevated (692 μmol mol−1) levels, [O3] at ambient (27 nmol mol−1, 7 hr seasonal mean) or elevated (61 nmol mol−1) levels. After anthesis, diurnal measurements were made of flag-leaf gas-exchange and in vitro Rubisco activity and content. Elevated [CO2] resulted in an increase in photoassimilation rate and a loss of excess Rubisco activity. Elevated [O3] caused a loss of Rubisco and a decline in photoassimilation rate late in flag-leaf development. Elevated [CO2] ameliorated O3 damage. The mechanisms of amelioration included a protective stomatal restriction of O3 flux to the mesophyll, and a compensatory effect of increased substrate on photoassimilation and photosynthetic control. However, the degree of protection and compensation appeared to be affected by the natural seasonal and diurnal variations in light, temperature and water status.

In the summer of 1989, major discoveries were made at the site of Joya de Cerén, El Salvador, where sudden depositions of volcanic ash in a.d. 600 resulted in unusually favorable conditions of preservation. The theoretical framework for the research is household archaeology, the study of prehistoric household groups. Household archaeology, as applied to Cerén can take advantage of the extraordinary preservation to study households in terms of their key activities of (a) production, including food, implements, vessels, and structures; (b) “pooling,” including storage, distribution, maintenance, and curation activities; (c) transmission of knowledge and material goods including access to resources; (d) reproduction in both the biological and sociocultural senses; and (e) co-residence/membership in the functioning residential group. One of the major finds was a possible codex or Precolumbian manuscript.

The hardness and modulus of thin (<1 μm) ceramic films have been investigated using the differential mechanical properties microprobe (DMPM). The DMPM consists of a computer controlled ultra-low load indentation system with a special system that allows the elastic stiffness of the contact to be determined continuously during the indentation process. The films were deposited in a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) system utilizing unique high temperature effusion cells. Two specimens have been studied. The first is a wedge shaped layer of amorphous Al2O3 on a silicon substrate. The thickness of the layer varies from 0 to 990 nm at the two extreme sides of a 3 in. silicon wafer. The effect of layer thickness on the hardness and modulus as measured with the DMPM has been quantified for this system. The second specimen is made up of 38 repetitions of alternating layers of crystalline TiO2 and amorphous Al2O3. The wavelength of the composition modulation and the thickness of the film varies uniformly from 0 to 38 nm and from 0 to 1460 nm respectively across the 3 in. diameter of the silicon substrate.

Summary
The nature of astrophysical shocks
Energetic phenomena are common in the Universe: Stars inject matter into the interstellar medium via high-velocity winds at their birth and during their lifetime, and massive stars explode as supernovae when they die. Observations of active galaxies reveal rapidly expanding radio sources and jets which appear to be blasting into the ambient medium. On yet larger scales, over-dense regions of the Universe draw matter in at high velocity by gravitational attraction, whereas under-dense regions can expand at high velocity into their surroundings. In many of these cases, the sound speed of the ambient medium is less than the velocity of the gas expanding into it, especially if radiative cooling is efficient. In this case there is no way for the ambient medium to respond to the energy injection in a smooth way. Instead a near discontinuity is produced, a shock, which suddenly accelerates, heats, and compresses the ambient gas. Shocks often govern the dynamics of astrophysical plasmas: they transmit energy from stars to the interstellar medium, they can compress gas past the point of gravitational instability so that stars form, they may terminate the growth of protostars by driving the ambient gas away, they efficiently destroy dust grains and thereby determine interstellar gas phase abundances, and they are efficient accelerators of highenergy particles. Shocks are particularly important in astronomy because they heat gas and cause it to radiate, providing valuable diagnostics for the underlying energetic phenomena and for the ambient medium%.
