Summary
One of Florence Nightingale'slegacies was her advocacy for, and establishment of, a formal system of training for nurses. This vocational or apprenticeship model of training rapidly spread, with hospital-based training schools being set up across the country. This chapter introduces you to core elements and considerations in ‘contemporary’ nursing education. We link this to the notion of ‘capability in nursing’ and provide an overview of what you can expect in your degree program, with links to other chapters where these concepts and ideas are explored in more depth. We conclude the chapter with a brief look at some of the resources and strategies that can be used to optimise your learning success.

Summary
The Gawain-poet's contributions to English language and literature were seminal and his quality as a poet maintains its excellence after more than 600 years. Yet the Gawain-poet continues to be anonymous. His most widely read work, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (SGGK), is still a mystery, for readers and scholars have yet to understand its many references to places and issues outside the text. The artist's craft and sophistication go underappreciated when much of the humor, irony, and metaphor in SGGK depends upon knowing the context and audience to which the poet's allusions apply. The goal of this study is to open the field to new knowledge of the Gawainpoet and the milieu of SGGK. One premise is that Gawain-poet studies have been inhibited by some conventional habits of mind that limit the range for research in spite of expanding numbers of studies, easier access to transcriptions, growing numbers of translations, digital imaging of texts and illuminations, linguistic analyses, and developments in dialectology. There are four common assumptions in the field of Gawain-studies which are especially persistent and problematic.
Chief among these issues is a dating premise represented by an often-quoted statement published in 1925 by John R. R. Tolkien and Eric V. Gordon. The conjecture placed SGGK in “the last quarter of the fourteenth century, the latest possible date being determined by that of the manuscript, c.1400.” The second complication is the persistent dismissal of a message written over the illumination which appears on folio 129.

Edward Adrian Wilson was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England on 23 July 1872. He attended Cheltenham College and then proceeded to Cambridge where he read natural sciences and to St George's Hospital, London where he trained in medicine. His name is best known because of his participation in Robert Falcon Scott's Antarctic expeditions of. 1901–1904 and 1910–1913. He reached the South Pole with Scott on 17 January 1912 and died with him on the return journey on or after 29 March 1912.

We examined interventions to optimize piperacillin-tazobactam use at 4 hospitals. Interventions for rotating house staff did not affect use. We could target empiric therapy in only 35% of cases. Because prescribing practices seemed to be institution specific, interventions should address attitudes of local prescribers. Interventions should target empiric therapy and ordering of appropriate cultures.

The corpus of figurines from Çatalhöyük has attracted the attention of diverse audiences but there has been an overwhelming focus on a selection of female figurines, many of which lack exact provenience. Excavation from 1961 to 1965 yielded more mundane examples classifiable as anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and abbreviated forms. New work attempts to balance the picture through various methods and strategies. The research presented here collates the artefacts from these early seasons with those retrieved from 1993 to 2006 to gain a fuller understanding of figurine practice. The figurines almost exclusively represent secondary deposition. We can now assess the number and type of figurines deposited in buildings, middens, burials and elsewhere. Reassessment of the entire corpus has prompted interrogation of the category of ‘figurine’ and reconsideration of the taxonomies along with other artefacts and image production at Çatalhöyük. Depositional practices at the site suggest processes of mobility and circulation that have rarely been considered in studies of figurines. Typical ‘representational’ or aesthetic approaches imply that the figurines were a special category with particular values of religiosity and gender; but attention to the archaeological context can imply meaning from the material practices within which ‘figurines’ were enmeshed.

We investigated knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of prescribers concerning piperacillin-tazobactam use at 4 Emory University-affiliated hospitals. Discussions during focus groups indicated that the participants' perceived knowledge of clinical criteria for appropriate piperacillin-tazobactam use was inadequate. Summary
More than one hundred and sixty years ago, in 1839, Sir Frederick Madden presented the first translation of the Middle-English poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (SGGK) to the Bannatyne Club of Edinburgh and dated it as having been written in the fifteenth century. In doing so, he established the first paradigm of dating the poem, based upon observations he made when analyzing the Cotton Nero A.x. manuscript, paying heed to handwriting, illuminated capitals, and details of clothing — assessments still upheld in contemporary scholarship, as will be shown below. Madden's paradigm was eventually dropped and replaced by a new position taken by John R. Tolkien and Eric V. Gordon in their introduction to a 1925 translation of SGGK, when they stated that the work was written in “the last quarter of the fourteenth century, the latest possible date being determined by that of the manuscript, c.1400.” My study will review the process whereby these scholars — Madden, Tolkien, and Gordon — dated the manuscript of SGGK, so that we can reexamine the present critical assumptions on the alliterative revival, handwriting, manuscript production, and late-medieval clothing as shown in illuminations.
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is preserved, together with three other poems presumed to be by the same author, in a single manuscript, Cotton Nero A.x., housed in the British Library. I will present a fresh set of observations from the poem based on three contemporary critical strategies to be explained hereafter. The purpose of my model is to demonstrate a concrete, visualizable, new paradigm for dating SGGK, which sets the poem in the Warwickshire Midlands between 1425 and 1428. The name chosen for this model is The Pentangle Hypothesis, based on the heraldic symbol of loyalty Sir Gawain wears on his shield and coat. As this essay hopes to illustrate, such a reconceived method for dating the manuscript is needed, for as yet scholars have been unable to explain ambiguities and unknowns about this complex but important work. With new insights enabling scholars to situate the poem strategically within its political, social, and physical contexts, we may discern the work's formal structure, as well as its comedic and ironic elements, Welsh-English geographic and political references, symbols, gameplaying, and paradoxical characterizations.

The sidewalls of etched Si lines will be the carrier channel surfaces in FinFET devices. These surfaces must be as smooth as possible for optimal device performance. Thus, the ability to quantitatively measure sidewall roughness is essential to process development. A methodology to quantitatively measure Fin sidewall roughness by AFM is presented. The samples were prepared for measurement by cleaving along the length of the Fins or dense-line test structures and by FIB polishing to bring the edge of the sample close to the sidewall of the etched feature. The cleaved and FIB-polished sample was mounted 17 degrees shy of normal. This exposes the sidewall on the top surface while preventing shadowing of the lower part of the sidewall due to contact between the side of the probe support and the cleaved or polished edge. Quantitative AFM measurements taken by this method show meaningful differences in the sidewall roughness for samples that have seen different sidewall smoothing treatments. The average observed rms roughness values for various surface-smoothing treatments range from 0.8 to 1.8 Å for a 50 nm square area.

Background
Post-traumatic stress disorder is a well recognised condition which can have long-term consequences. A rail accident to commuter trains in south London provided an opportunity, within the context of a Psychological Therapies Service, to study the prevalence and associations of the condition in a follow-up study.
MethodPostal questionnaires were completed by 187 survivors (52% response rate) 10 to 22 months after the accident, and their symptoms were compared with a commuter control group.
ResultsThe accident group scored significantly higher on the Impact of Events scale (IES) than the control group. Severity of physical injury was significantly associated with high IES scores. Thirty per cent of those moderately or severely injured showed high levels of intrusion or avoidance symptoms (sub-scores of 20 or more). Thirty per cent of those nearest the accident focus had high sub-scores, associated variables being the accident experience of risk of death, feeling trapped and seeing death. For those less directly involved the proportions with symptoms were similar to those of controls.
ConclusionsIt is recommended that disaster services should provide for long-term psychological effects, particularly for those survivors who are injured, who experience risk of death, feeling trapped or who witness death.

The back-reflect ion double-scanning diffractometer method, by which lattice parameters can be measured with a reproducibility of one part in 150,000 has been applied at liquid helium temperatures. A cryostat attachment is described which enables diffraction profiles to be scanned on both sides of the primary X-ray beam up to 163°, 2θ. Alignment errors may, thus, be eliminated by measuring the included angle 4θ between respective Bragg reflections. The method is illustrated by measuring the lattice parameters of the I.U.Cr. standard specimens of silicon and tungsten at various cryogenic temperatures.

A scanning range over Bragg angles from −163 to +163° 2θ is obtained by combining a diffractometer capable of scanning both sides of the primary X-ray beam with a very short (3-in.) high-power focused X-ray tube. The ability to scan the included angle 4θ between respective diffraction profiles on either side of the primary beam over the entire range of Bragg angles, provides a direct method of eliminating errors caused by a displacement of the specimen surface from the axis of the goniometer. The method is demonstrated by determining the lattice parameters of standard specimens used in the I.U.Cr. Precision Lattice Parameter Project.
