Editor's Introduction: This year marks the seventieth anniversary of the end of World War II, an event that had profound implications for many Asian countries. This “Asia Beyond the Headlines” feature focuses on the impact that the Japanese surrender, which came several months after the German one, had across East Asia. I put a series of questions to three scholars—modern Japan historian Carol Gluck, China specialist Rana Mitter, and Koreanist Charles Armstrong—who have thought deeply about 1945 and its aftermath. Contacting them initially before the seventieth anniversary of VE Day had come and gone in early May, and then following up after that first big commemorative date had passed but well before the mid-August and early September dates associated with Japan's surrender, I invited them to reflect on the following issues: (1) how discussions associated with this year's anniversary have been and are likely to carry forward or break from those of one, two, three, or four decades ago; (2) what we should expect from the statements and other activities to come in mid-August and in early September; and (3) the varying ways that 1945 can be understood, depending on the part of the region in question, as bringing one era to a close, beginning another, or doing both of these things. Their responses, which engage to greater or lesser degrees with the three themes flagged in my initial questions, can be read as standalone short essays. They also fit together neatly to offer a collective window onto the varied meanings of the war and the wide-ranging debates that continue to swirl around how it should be understood, remembered, and commemorated.

Summary
On October 3, 2010, the (North) Korean Workers’ Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun dedicated a signed article to the twentieth anniversary of Kim Jong Il’s essay “The Workers’ Party of Korea Organizes and Guides all the Victories of Our People.” Appearing a few days after the KWP (Korean Workers’ Party) Delegates’ Conference – the first major party meeting to be held in thirty years, at which Kim Jong Il’s son, Kim Jong Un, emerged as heir apparent – the article stressed ideological purity and generational continuity with a hammering force:
What is important among the undying exploits of Kim Jong Il is that he has developed the WPK [Workers’ Party of Korea] into an ideologically pure party equipped with the revolutionary idea of President Kim Il Sung, the Juche idea, invincible militant ranks united as firm as a rock around the headquarters of the revolution and an experienced and tested guiding force advancing the Songun revolution to victory.
The WPK is demonstrating its might as an ideologically pure party guided by the monolithic idea, the revolutionary idea of President Kim Il Sung. Only Juche type blood is running in the veins of all its members and they are advancing along the road indicated by the Juche idea no matter which way the wind may blow. This is the real picture of the WPK.
The whole party has become an organizationally and ideologically integral whole as its all members are united as firm as rock around the Party Central Committee headed by Kim Jong Il and integral body for action and the most elite vanguard ranks transparent in ideology and faith and strong in the sense of organization, unity and militancy. This is the ever-victorious WPK.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Il can be criticized for many failings, but if one of his goals has been keeping his country in the global media spotlight, he has been wildly successful. Of course, North Korea gets this international attention for all the wrong reasons: military provocations, a clandestine nuclear program, a bankrupt economy, an atrocious record on human rights, and an eccentric if not deranged leadership. Some of the accusations leveled against North Korea in the Western media and popular press may have a basis in fact, others are more questionable. But until recently, substantive knowledge of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) was notable mainly for its absence. Before the 1990s, little was written about the DPRK beyond official North Korean propaganda and its opposite, anti-North Korean propaganda from the South. Much of this has changed, both because of new sources of information (including material from North Korea's former communist allies), but more importantly because of the growing interest in the subject after South Korean democratization in the late 1980s and the first US-North Korean nuclear crisis of the early 1990s.

By definition, the cold war was understood on both sides of the conflict to be a global struggle that stopped short of direct military engagement between the superpowers (the U.S. and the USSR). In Europe, the putative center ofthat struggle, the geopolitical battle lines were fixed after the early 1950s, or they at least could not be altered by normal military means without provoking World War III—which would result in mutual annihilation. Therefore, each side hoped to make gains over the other by using more subtle, political, and often clandestine methods, winning the “hearts and minds” of people in the other bloc (as well as maintaining potentially wayward support in one's own bloc), hoping to subvert the other side from within. The cold war was an enormous campaign of propaganda and psychological warfare on both sides. A vast range of cultural resources, from propaganda posters and radio broadcasts to sophisticated literary magazines, jazz bands, ballet troupes, and symphony orchestras, were weapons in what has recently come to be called the “Cultural Cold War” (Saunders 1999). Studies of the cultural cold war have proliferated since the late 1990s, most of which focus on U.S. cultural policy and are concerned with the European “theater” of this conflict (Hixson 1997; Fehrenbach and Poiger 2000; Poiger 2000; Berghahn 2001).

Probably no other country in recent decades has experienced economic reversals of fortune as dramatic as South Korea's, rising from economic “basket case,” in the estimation of the US State Department, to economic “miracle” in the 1960s and 1970s, but now mired in an economic crisis with no easy end in sight. Kim's Class Struggle or Family Struggle? examines the people who, more than any other single group, bore the burden of South Korea's transformation from agricultural backwater to industrial powerhouse: young, low-wage, female factory workers. Specifically, Kim focuses on workers in the Masan Free Export Zone (MAFEZ), established by the Park Chung Hee military government in 1970 to spearhead South Korea's new export-led industrialization program.
