This paper identifies the theme of honey gathering in Charlotte Brontë's fiction and places it within the context of Romantic and early Victorian representations of the nectarium's role in insect-flower relationships. Brontë's novels often invert the conventional use of botany to represent female sexuality by representing men as flowers and endowing her protagonists with an ulterior form of entomological agency. These insects work to express Brontë's desire for greater economic and erotic mobility, but it is argued that this mobility is problematized by the self-absorbed nature of the masculine nectarium, a dulcet gland in flowers originally believed by botanists to ooze sugar to serve a plant's own needs. This is particularly evident in Brontë's industrial romance Shirley (1849), as the theme of honey gathering is pathologized to visualize a crisis in the plotting of Victorian femininity. This paper may be helpful to scholars interested in Brontë's fiction, representations of sexuality, botany, entomology, ecology, and early Victorian pest discourse.

In their target article, Jones, Arena, Nittrouer, Alonso, and Lindsey (2017) make a compelling argument that discrimination may be best conceptualized continuously rather than categorically with respect to dimensions of subtlety, formality, and intentionality. We agree that such a framework can help capture the multifaceted nature of discrimination. The authors note that subtle and interpersonal discrimination, in particular, are difficult to address through formal organizational policy. In the workplace, subtle and often interpersonal discrimination can be overlooked or attributed to misunderstanding and, thus, may go unpunished (Dovidio & Gaertner, 2004).

Although beta-amyloid, anxiety and depression have been linked cross-sectionally to reduced memory function in healthy older adults without dementia, prospective data evaluating these associations are lacking. Using data from an observational cohort study of 178 healthy older adults without dementia followed for 3 years, we found that anxiety symptoms significantly moderated the relationship between beta-amyloid level and decline in verbal (Cohen's d = 0.65) and episodic (Cohen's d = 0.38) memory. Anxiety symptoms were additionally linked to greater decline in executive function, irrespective of beta-amyloid and other risk factors. These findings suggest that interventions to mitigate anxiety symptoms may help delay memory decline in otherwise healthy older adults with elevated beta-amyloid.

Background:
To date evidence of the relationship between cognition and Aβ amyloid during the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) has been inconsistent. This study aimed to describe the nature and magnitude of the relationship between Aβ amyloid and cognitive performance of individuals without dementia.
Methods:Composite cognitive measures were developed from the Australian Imaging Biomarkers and Lifestyle study neuropsychological test battery using data from 768 healthy older adults and 133 adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). A subgroup of this sample (174 healthy, 53 MCI) underwent neuroimaging for Aβ amyloid.
Results:Within the MCI group individuals with high Aβ amyloid showed selective impairment for memory compared with those with low Aβ amyloid; however, this difference was not evident in the healthy group.
Conclusions:The current findings provide further evidence of the relationship between Aβ amyloid and cognition, with memory impairment being the primary symptom of the underlying disease during the prodromal phases of AD.

Originally published in 2006, this authoritative clinical handbook provides a detailed overview of the main disorders encountered by child and adolescent psychiatrists in clinical practice, ranging from eating, sleep and affective disorders to substance abuse, gender identity disorder and sexual abuse. The approach is evidence based and emphasis is on good clinical practice and quality control of patient care. In contrast to other books in the field, the authors' intention is not to cover exhaustively all the relevant science, but rather to present in condensed form any research findings that are significant for clinical practice. For coherence, each chapter is constructed in the same way: introduction, definition and classification, epidemiology, the clinical picture, aetiology, treatment and outcome. The disorders covered are based on the ICD- 10 and DSM-IV classifications, and appendices include documents for assessment of intervention planning and evaluation.

Summary
Child and adolescent psychiatry is a rapidly expanding branch of medicine. Important research gains have been made in the past decades, and there is now a firm knowledge basis for many of the psychiatric disorders with child or adolescent onset. This knowledge has taken some time to filter through to clinical child and adolescent psychiatric services.
The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive overview of the relevant objectives of child and adolescent psychiatry in clinical practice. The approach is decisively evidence based as far as this is possible with the current status in the field and thus avoids the consideration of various theoretical or even speculative approaches. Rather, the emphasis is on guidance for good clinical practice and help with the quality control of patient care. The various chapters have been written by experts in the respective fields. In contrast to other textbooks, the major objective is not to cover all relevant research findings exhaustively but rather to condense the scientific knowledge that is significant for clinical practice. Thus, the present deskbook deals with clinical disorders only.
The list and order of contents is guided by the ICD-10 and the various chapters also comment on the DSM-IV classification. A clear common structure for the chapters enforces the coherence of the monograph. After an introduction, definition and classification, epidemiology, the clinical picture, aetiology, treatment and outcome are specifically outlined for each disorder. Tables, figures and flowcharts, serve as additional sources of information and highlight special messages.

Objectives:
To determine the prevalence of MRSA colonization on admission to the ICU and the incidence of MRSA colonization in the ICU.
Design:Prospective cohort study.
Setting:University hospital.
Participants:Patients admitted to the ICU in 2000-2001.
Methods:Patients were screened for MRSA with nose, throat, groin, and axilla swabs on admission and discharge. MRSA acquisition was defined as a negative admission screen and a positive discharge screen. Risk factors analyzed included previous wards/current unit, gender, age, and length of stay prior to and in the ICU. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using logistic regression.
Results:Of screened patients, 6.8% were MRSA colonized on admission to the ICU. Some patients (11.4%) became newly colonized during their stay in the ICU. Factors that remained significant in the multivariate analysis of MRSA colonization on admission were previous admission to various wards and length of stay prior to ICU admission of more than 3 days. In the multivariate analysis of MRSA acquisition in the ICU, being a trauma patient and length of stay in the ICU greater than 2 days remained significant. Thirty-six percent of patients had both admission and discharge swabs taken. This percentage increased in the presence of a supervisory nurse.
Conclusion:Significant acquisition of MRSA occurs in the ICU of our hospital, with trauma patients at increased risk. Patients who had been on the cardiothoracic ward prior to the ICU had a lower risk of MRSA colonization on admission. Presence of a supervisory nurse improved compliance with screening.
