Interactions with parents are integral in shaping the development of children’s emotional processes. Important aspects of these interactions are overall (mean level) affective experience and affective synchrony (linkages between parent and child affect across time). Respectively, mean-level affect and affective synchrony reflect aspects of the content and structure of dyadic interactions. Most research on parent–child affect during dyadic interactions has focused on infancy and early childhood; adolescence, however, is a key period for both normative emotional development and the emergence of emotional disorders. We examined affect in early to mid-adolescents (N = 55, Mage = 12.27) and their parents using a video-mediated recall task of 10-min conflict-topic discussions. Using multilevel modeling, we found evidence of significant level-2 effects (mean affect) and level-1 effects (affective synchrony) for parents and their adolescents. Level-2 and level-1 associations were differentially moderated by adolescent age and adolescent internalizing and externalizing symptoms. More specifically, parent–adolescent synchrony was stronger when adolescents were older and had more internalizing problems. Further, more positive adolescent mean affect was associated with more positive parent affect (and vice versa), but only for dyads with low adolescent externalizing problems. Results underscore the importance of additional research examining parent–child affect in adolescence.

Background
Subanesthetic ketamine infusion therapy can produce fast-acting antidepressant effects in patients with major depression. How single and repeated ketamine treatment modulates the whole-brain functional connectome to affect clinical outcomes remains uncharacterized.
MethodsData-driven whole brain functional connectivity (FC) analysis was used to identify the functional connections modified by ketamine treatment in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). MDD patients (N = 61, mean age = 38, 19 women) completed baseline resting-state (RS) functional magnetic resonance imaging and depression symptom scales. Of these patients, n = 48 and n = 51, completed the same assessments 24 h after receiving one and four 0.5 mg/kg intravenous ketamine infusions. Healthy controls (HC) (n = 40, 24 women) completed baseline assessments with no intervention. Analysis of RS FC addressed effects of diagnosis, time, and remitter status.
ResultsSignificant differences (p < 0.05, corrected) in RS FC were observed between HC and MDD at baseline in the somatomotor network and between association and default mode networks. These disruptions in FC in MDD patients trended toward control patterns with ketamine treatment. Furthermore, following serial ketamine infusions, significant decreases in FC were observed between the cerebellum and salience network (SN) (p < 0.05, corrected). Patient remitters showed increased FC between the cerebellum and the striatum prior to treatment that decreased following treatment, whereas non-remitters showed the opposite pattern.
ConclusionResults support that ketamine treatment leads to neurofunctional plasticity between distinct neural networks that are shown as disrupted in MDD patients. Cortico-striatal-cerebellar loops that encompass the SN could be a potential biomarker for ketamine treatment.

A variable-temperature (79, 145, and 293 K) extended x-ray absorption fine structure study, using rare-earth LIII absorption edges, is reported for phosphate glasses doped with rare-earth elements (R, where R = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) with compositions close to metaphosphate, R(PO3)3. The results yield nearest-neighbor R–O distances that demonstrate the lanthanide contraction in a glassy matrix and an R–O coordination intermediate between 6 and 7 for rare-earth ions with smaller atomic number (Z) and 6 for rare-earth ions with larger Z. Thermal parameters show no significant changes in R–O distances or coordination numbers between 293 and 79 K. There is evidence of an R–P correlation between 3.3 and 3.6 Å and the beginning of a second R–O correlation at approximately 4 Å. No R–R correlations up to a distance of approximately 4 Å were observed.

Open interconnections on integrated circuits (ICs) are a serious and ubiquitous problem throughout the micro-electronics industry. The efforts to understand the mechanisms responsible for producing open interconnections and to develop analytical methods to localize them demonstrate the concern manufacturers have for this problem. Multiple layers of metallization not only increase the probability that an open conductor or via will occur because of the increased number of interconnections and vias but also increase the difficulty in localizing the site of the failure because upper layers may mask the failure site.
Rapid failure analysis of open-conductor defects is critical in new product development and reliability assessment of ICs where manufacturing and product development delays can cost millions of dollars a day. In this article, we briefly review some standard failure analysis approaches and then concentrate on new techniques to rapidly locate open-conductor defects that would have been difficult or impossible to identify using earlier methods. Each method is described in terms of the physics of signal generation, application, and advantages and disadvantages when compared to existing methods.

As part of the investigation of the use of Pd-based ohmic contacts to p-type GaAs, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and secondary ion mass spectroscopy were used to explore the uniformity at the metal/GaAs interface and its composition profile after ohmic contact formation. Comparisons were made among Au:Be, Au:Be/Pd, and Au/Pd contacts. Regions of p+ were formed in n-type GaAs by a spin-on source which was rapid diffused at 950 °C for 6 s or by ion implantation at a dose of 3 × 1014 atoms/cm2 at 150 keV for 15 min. Metallizations were accomplished by evaporation with a base pressure of 3 × 10−6 Torr. Sintering of the metallizations was done in a furnace at 350 °C for 15 min. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscope studies revealed an absence of spiking when Be is present in the metallization scheme but a broad band diffused into GaAs. An improper metal/GaAs adhesion was observed when Pd is absent. Be assists in confining the reaction of Pd with GaAs and acts as a diffusion barrier to the p+ dopant. Electrical measurements, taken from transmission line and cross bridge Kelvin resistors, were best for the Pd/Au:Be, which yielded a contact resistance of 0.3 μΩ-cm2.

Stable, low resistance ohmic contacts to p-type GaAs were studied for use in semiconductor laser applications. Comparison was made between Cr/Au, Au:Be and Pd/Au:Be metallizations. Regions of P+ were formed in N-type GaAs by a spin-on source which was rapid diffused at 950°C for 6s. Surface doping of 2×1020/cm3 and junction depth of 0.4 μm were determined by SIMS, groove and stain, and electrochemical profile. Metallizations were accomplished by thermal evaporation with a base pressure of 3×10-6 Torr. Sintering of the metallizations was done by furnace or RTA at 350°C. This sintering temperature was selected after RBS studies predicted an absence of significant interdiffusion. Pd/Au:Be yielded the best result of 0.3 μΩ-cm2 based upon transmission line, cross-bridge Kelvin and van der Pauw studies. A layer of BeO was revealed on the surface of Au:Be contacts by Auger studies. Cross-section TEM studies on Pd/Au:Be revealed a uniform layer of alloyed Ga-Au with an absence of spiking.
