The U.S. Department of Agriculture–Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) has been a leader in weed science research covering topics ranging from the development and use of integrated weed management (IWM) tactics to basic mechanistic studies, including biotic resistance of desirable plant communities and herbicide resistance. ARS weed scientists have worked in agricultural and natural ecosystems, including agronomic and horticultural crops, pastures, forests, wild lands, aquatic habitats, wetlands, and riparian areas. Through strong partnerships with academia, state agencies, private industry, and numerous federal programs, ARS weed scientists have made contributions to discoveries in the newest fields of robotics and genetics, as well as the traditional and fundamental subjects of weed–crop competition and physiology and integration of weed control tactics and practices. Weed science at ARS is often overshadowed by other research topics; thus, few are aware of the long history of ARS weed science and its important contributions. This review is the result of a symposium held at the Weed Science Society of America’s 62nd Annual Meeting in 2022 that included 10 separate presentations in a virtual Weed Science Webinar Series. The overarching themes of management tactics (IWM, biological control, and automation), basic mechanisms (competition, invasive plant genetics, and herbicide resistance), and ecosystem impacts (invasive plant spread, climate change, conservation, and restoration) represent core ARS weed science research that is dynamic and efficacious and has been a significant component of the agency’s national and international efforts. This review highlights current studies and future directions that exemplify the science and collaborative relationships both within and outside ARS. Given the constraints of weeds and invasive plants on all aspects of food, feed, and fiber systems, there is an acknowledged need to face new challenges, including agriculture and natural resources sustainability, economic resilience and reliability, and societal health and well-being.

A sensitive search has been made for OH maser emission from a sample of 16 symbiotic stars. This sample has been selected on the basis of infrared optical depth and variability, so that the stars within it have circumstellar shells similar to those seen in the well-known OH/IR and OH/Mira stars. There were no significant detections, except for one unassociated background source, and we conclude that the presence of a hot binary companion inhibits any possible OH maser action.

We describe a versatile infrared camera/spectrograph, IRIS, designed and constructed at the Anglo-Australian Observatory for use on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. A variety of optical configurations can be selected under remote control to provide several direct image scales and a few low-resolution spectroscopic formats. Two cross-dispersed transmission echelles are of novel design, as is the use of a modified Bowen-Burch system to provide a fast f/ratio in the widest-field option. The drive electronics includes a choice of readout schemes for versatility, and continuous display when the array is not taking data, to facilitate field acquisition and focusing.
The linearity of the detector has been studied in detail. Although outwardly good, slight nonlinearities prevent removal of fixed-pattern noise from the data without application of a cubic linearising function.
Specific control and data-reduction software has been written. We describe also a scanning mode developed for spectroscopic imaging.

Objectives: To report our experience in providing cardiac technician led paediatric echocardiography services in a district general hospital in the United Kingdom. Methods: We have collected prospectively the numbers of referrals, and the proportion of abnormal echocardiograms, since inception of the service in 2000. In additional, for a period of 12 months, we have audited in detail the patterns of referral to the service, and outcomes, assessing the effect of the service on the outreach clinic run by a visiting paediatric cardiologist. Results: Use of the system resulted in detection of a wide range of abnormalities, with our audit showing that the patients received appropriate management. The total referrals to the service increased 10 fold over the 4 year period of the study. The proportion of abnormal hearts detected by echocardiography, however, dropped from 90 per cent to 16 per cent over the same period. The numbers of patients seen in the outreach cardiology clinic remained unaltered. Conclusions: Having been proved to be an effective model for the triage of children with suspected congenital cardiac disease, adoption of a cardiac technician led echocardiographic service has seen a dramatic increase in the numbers of echocardiograms requested, without decreasing the workload of the visiting paediatric cardiologist.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
Most restoration ecologists have concerned themselves with the re-establishment of desirable plants and animals but generally overlook the resource base upon which the animal and plant communities are maintained, the soils. Reconstructing the soils is difficult because a soil comprises both organic and inorganic components that have weathered in situ for a very long time. As such, despite the best efforts, soils that have been reconstructed always contain early-successional characteristics (see Marrs, this volume). In most situations, the plants that colonise early-successional sites and are capable of surviving on these soils are not those that are considered desirable for restoration ‘success’. Restoration managers are primarily responsible for placing late seral vegetation into early seral soils.
Existing at the interface of plant and soil are soil organisms: the most diverse group of organisms at any site. Current estimates using molecular diversity measurements suggest that there are from 4000 to 40,000 distinct genetic populations of soil organisms per gram of soil, of which only less than 5% potentially may be cultured (e.g. Collins et al., 1995; Allen et al., in press)! No accurate estimates of soil organism richness across a landscape exist but it certainly is in the thousands to millions. These organisms change with successional time (many form highly specific associations with a limited number of plant species) in addition to their activities being altered due to discontinuous resource inputs (in the form of organic matter) and soil structural and compositional changes.

Summary
Alloimmune thrombocytopenia is the commonest cause of neonatal thrombocytopenia, occurring in one in 1000–2000 live births; this is equivalent to 400–800 cases per year in the UK. The pathogenesis of alloimmune thrombocytopenia is similar to HDFN (Chapter 1):
• The mother is negative for a platelet alloantigen which the fetus has inherited from the father, and maternal alloimmunization occurs in a proportion of women who may have a genetic predisposition to become immunized (Section 1.3.3).
• Placental transfer of IgG antibodies may result in moderate to severe thrombocytopenia as early as 16 weeks’ gestation.
• The most clinically significant incompatibility is for HPA-1a, the frequency of this antigen being 97.5% in Caucasians (Section 12.3).
• HPA-1a alloimmunization is HLA class II restricted; there is a strong association with HLA-DRw52a (HLA-DR3*0101), which is present in one in three of Caucasian women. Although the negative predictive value of the absence of HLA-DR3*0101 for HPA-1a alloimmunization in HPA-1a-negative women is >99%, the positive predictive value of its presence for alloimmunization has been estimated to be only 35%, and not all alloimmunized mothers will have babies with thrombocytopenia (Section 4.2).
• The antibody titre and isotype have not been shown to correlate consistently with the development or severity of disease (Section 12.4.4.2).
