In a post-#Me-Too/Black Lives Matter landscape, the gender- and race-politics of the Golden Age of rock have increasingly come under interrogation. Hip-hop challenging rock’s long-standing hegemony constitutes a sociological as well as a musical shift, with a production such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock (2015) perhaps seeming hopelessly old-fashioned in comparison with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton from the same year. This article’s close and contextualized readings of four post-Hamilton jukebox rock musicals debate two principal issues. First, the extent to which the jukebox musical is fit for purpose: creative enough to repurpose rock’s cultural patrimony for an enriching night in the theatre. Second, how and why the curation practices of the rock musical reproduce or challenge the intersectional vectors of gendered and racial oppression, which render the genre problematic.

A UNIVERSAL CLASSIC? EL ALCALDE DE ZALAMEA ON THE CONTEMPORARY STAGE AND SCREEN
La vida es sueño [Life is a Dream] is the most regularly staged comedia in the UK, a symptom and cause of the play sometimes referred to as the Spanish Hamlet being amongst the very few examples of Golden Age theatre to have entered the global dramatic canon. El alcalde de Zalamea [The Mayor of Zalamea], ‘a play which audiences, readers and critics alike have found easy to respond to and appreciate’ nevertheless has an equal or greater claim to being Calderón de la Barca's best-loved title back home. Extant fragments of an early silent film adaptation are held in the Spanish Film Institute, and two subsequent feature-length versions made after the introduction of sound to cinema – El alcalde de Zalamea (José Gutiérrez Maesso, 1954) and La leyenda del alcalde de Zalamea [The Legend of the Mayor of Zalamea] (Mario Camus, 1973) – collectively ensure that it has been the comedia most often adapted for the screen. Since its creation in 1986, the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico [National Classical Theatre Company] (CNTC) has staged four productions, more than of any other play. In a very different theatrical realm, from 1994 onwards, the real-life villagers of the town of Zalamea have performed an amateur version every August, an event declared in 2018 to be of national tourist interest. The primary aim of this chapter is to understand better how and why El alcalde retains its appeal for modern-day audiences, and to consider some of the ways in which contemporary performances might influence our reading of the play-text.
The narrative addresses the complex interplay between duty, honour and interpersonal relations amidst the disruptive presence of soldiers billeted in the eponymous small rural town. Captain Álvaro is lodged in the home Pedro Crespo shares with his two children – Isabel and Juan – alongside their cousin Inés. Concerned for his daughter, the paterfamilias conceals her existence from the outsider. Álvaro uncovers the ruse and, fulfilling Crespo's worst fears, rapes the young woman. Isabel's father begs the captain to restore their honour by becoming her husband.

Ever since Ramón Menéndez Pidal referred to a Lope play as a ‘verdadero cinedrama’ [genuinely cinematic drama],commentators have persistently noted the cinematic quality of the comedia, with its rapid scene changes and prioritising of action over characterisation. Nonetheless, there is no real tradition, beyond the occasional one-off project, of filming Golden Age plays for the silver screen. Even if we resist the arguably unfair comparison with Shakespeare, the comedia lags behind other native Spanish literary works. As Peter W. Evans notes:
There have been comparatively few adaptations of Golden-Age plays. Even in the 20s and in the 60s and in the early 70s when, for different historical reasons, the Spanish cinema was repeatedly turning to the country's literary heritage, filmmakers were rarely inspired by the comedia.
In the case of Lope de Vega, there have, to date, been the following cinematic adaptations: Fuenteovejuna (1947), La moza de cántaro (1953), Fuenteovejuna (1972), La leyenda del alcalde de Zalamea [The Legend of the Mayor of Zalamea] (1973), El mejor alcalde, el rey (1973), El perro del hortelano (1996) and, most recently, La dama boba (2006). With a total of seven screen appearances, there have been more films based on Lope's plays in Spain than of any other native seventeenth-century dramatist; nevertheless this popularity is only relative, and is placed in sharp relief when one considers that there have been ten adaptations of both Don Quijote and Don Juan Tenorio. In this article, I will offer a brief history of the production and reception of these seven films, paying particular attention to Antonio Román's Fuenteovejuna, Pilar Miró's El perro del hortelano and Manuel Iborra's La dama boba.
Lope made his screen debut in 1935 with La musa y el Fénix [The Muse and the Phoenix], written by Eduardo G. Portillo and directed by the German filmmaker Constantin David. The film was a fictional recreation of the playwright's life and times rather than an adaptation of one of his works. It was another non-Spanish director, Jean Renoir, who then planned to make the first screen adaptation of a Lope play with Fuenteovejuna in the late 1930s, but the project ground to a halt when the Republicans began to lose the Civil War.

Summary
A production of La vida es sueño staged by Helena Pimenta—artistic director of the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico (CNTC)—is fast staking its claim to being the Comedia's biggest commercial and critical success on the twenty-first-century Spanish stage. Having previously played Hamlet, Blanca Portillo here tackles Golden Age theatre's best-known troubled young man; in press interviews, the well-respected stage and screen actress recalled studying Calderón's most canonical play with José (Pepe) Estruch some three decades earlier.
Having learnt the art of theatre and pedagogy in the UK and Uruguay, Estruch returned to Spain in 1967, where he dedicated himself almost exclusively to teaching: “ya no hago teatro por hacer teatro. Lo hago por enseñar a otros cómo hacerlo, sugerir formas, darles ejemplos, abrir caminos, despertar curiosidades” [“I no longer do theatre for the sake of doing it. I do it to teach others how to do it, to suggest forms, to give examples, to open pathways, to awaken curiosities”] (cited in Rojo). According to Eduardo Vasco, artistic director of the CNTC from 2004 to 2011, Estruch was crucial to a proper understanding of the evolution of the staging of the classics in Spain (CNTC). My aim here is to substantiate this claim and, in the process, to complement the predominantly descriptive and bio graphical scholarly work previously undertaken on Estruch by locating the activities of this Republican exile within a broader analytical framework which will seek to advance two interrelated arguments: that Estruch's transnational pedagogical labour can be construed as simultaneously being a prosaic yet powerful form of adaptation; and that the established academic discipline of exile studies and the nascent scholarly field of Comedia performance would mutually benefit from an interchange of ideas and experiences.
Pepe Estruch was born into a Masonic left-wing political family from Alicante in 1916. Having studied engineering at Madrid's famous Residencia de Estudiantes, he held a number of important administrative and cultural posts during the Civil War for the Republic's Ministries of Propaganda and State in Valencia and Barcelona respectively.

Abstract
Polarization and other observations indicate that supernova explosions are aspherical and often axisymmetric, implying a necessary departure from spherical models. Akiyama et al. investigated the effects of the magneto-rotational instability (MRI) on collapsing and rotating cores. Their results indicate that the MRI dynamo generates magnetic fields of greater than the Q.E.D. limit (4.4 × 1013 G). We present preliminary results of the effects of the super-strong magnetic field on degenerate electron pressure in core collapse.
Introduction
Although core collapse cannot be observed directly, except with neutrinos, observations of explosion ejecta can provide us with information about the explosion mechanism itself. Such observations indicate that explosions of core collapse supernovae are aspherical and often bipolar. HST observations clearly show that 1987A has aspherical ejecta for which the axis aligns roughly with the small axis of the rings (Pun et al. 2001; Wang et al. 2002). Spectropolarimetry is a powerful tool for probing ejecta asphericity, and it reveals that most, if not all, core collapse supernovae possesses asphericity and often times bipolar structure (Wang et al. 1996, 2001). Explosions of Type Ib and Ic are more strongly aspherical, while the asphericity of Type II supernovae increases with time as the ejecta expand and the photosphere recedes (Wang et al. 2001; Leonard et al. 2000, 2001). The indication is that it is the core collapse mechanism itself that is responsible for the asphericity.
The observational evidence of asphericity motivates the inclusion of rotation in core collapse physics.
