Posttraumatic stress and delay discounting: a meta-analytic review

Delay discounting—the extent to which individuals show a preference for smaller immediate rewards over larger delayed rewards—has been proposed as a transdiagnostic neurocognitive process across mental health conditions, but its examination in relation to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is comparatively recent. To assess the aggregated evidence for elevated delay discounting in relation to posttraumatic stress, we conducted a meta-analysis on existing empirical literature. Bibliographic searches identified 209 candidate articles, of which 13 articles with 14 independent effect sizes were eligible for meta-analysis, reflecting a combined sample size of N = 6897. Individual study designs included case-control (e.g. examination of differences in delay discounting between individuals with and without PTSD) and continuous association studies (e.g. relationship between posttraumatic stress symptom severity and delay discounting). In a combined analysis of all studies, the overall relationship was a small but statistically significant positive association between posttraumatic stress and delay discounting (r = .135, p < .0001). The same relationship was statistically significant for continuous association studies (r = .092, p = .027) and case-control designs (r = .179, p < .001). Evidence of publication bias was minimal. The included studies were limited in that many did not concurrently incorporate other psychiatric conditions in the analyses, leaving the specificity of the relationship to posttraumatic stress less clear. Nonetheless, these findings are broadly consistent with previous meta-analyses of delayed reward discounting in relation to other mental health conditions and provide further evidence for the transdiagnostic utility of this construct.

With their sizes larger than 0.7 Mpc, Giant Radio Galaxies (GRGs) are the largest individual objects in the Universe. To date, the reason why they reach such enormous extensions is still unclear. One of the proposed scenarios suggests that they are the result of multiple episodes of jet activity. Cross-correlating the INTEGRAL+Swift AGN population with radio catalogues (NVSS, FIRST, SUMSS), we found that 22% of the sources are GRG (a factor four higher than those selected from radio catalogues). Remarkably, all of the sources in the sample show signs of restarting radio activity. The X-ray properties are consistent with this scenario, the sources being in a high-accretion, high-luminosity state with respect to the previous activity responsible for the radio lobes.

New dating confirms that people occupied the Australian continent before the earliest time inferred from conventional radiocarbon analysis. Many of the new ages were obtained by accelerator mass spectrometry 14C dating after an acid–base–acid pretreatment with bulk combustion (ABA-BC) or after a newly developed acid–base–wet oxidation pretreatment with stepped combustion (ABOX-SC). The samples (charcoal) came from the earliest occupation levels of the Devil's Lair site in southwestern Western Australia. Initial occupation of this site was previously dated 35,000 14C yr B.P. Whereas the ABA-BC ages are indistinguishable from background beyond 42,000 14C yr B.P., the ABOX-SC ages are in stratigraphic order to ∼55,000 14C yr B.P. The ABOX-SC chronology suggests that people were in the area by 48,000 cal yr B.P. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), electron spin resonance (ESR) ages, U-series dating of flowstones, and 14C dating of emu eggshell carbonate are in agreement with the ABOX-SC 14C chronology. These results, based on four independent techniques, reinforce arguments for early colonization of the Australian continent.

A search has been made using the Buckland Park air shower array for evidence of any excess of events from the direction of the recent supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Upper limits resulting from this search and their significance are discussed in this paper.

Charcoal is the result of natural and anthropogenic burning events, when biomass is exposed to elevated temperatures under conditions of restricted oxygen. This process produces a range of materials, collectively known as pyrogenic carbon, the most inert fraction of which is known as black carbon (BC). BC degrades extremely slowly and is resistant to diagenetic alteration involving the addition of exogenous carbon, making it a useful target substance for radiocarbon dating particularly of more ancient samples, where contamination issues are critical. We present results of tests using a new method for the quantification and isolation of BC, known as hydropyrolysis (hypy). Results show controlled reductive removal of non-BC organic components in charcoal samples, including lignocellulosic and humic material. The process is reproducible and rapid, making hypy a promising new approach not only for isolation of purified BC for 14C measurement but also in quantification of different labile and resistant sample C fractions.

Dog-driving methods are a subject on which no two people think alike, and whenever two or three men meet together in the Arctic, they form the basis for endless discussion and argument. We can remember many a good night's sleep lost when a visitor arrived apparently tired out, but with enough energy left to sit up all night arguing the relative merits of fan or centre trace, or something of that sort. For this reason we feel rather diffident in adding our opinions to those already published recently in The Polar Record. With regard to different equipment, harness, sledges and team formations—these are almost entirely a question of local conditions and, therefore, not really worth arguing about. For instance, in North-East Greenland, we used regularly fan, centre trace and tandem formations to suit differing snow conditions, etc., and each was, under the right conditions, definitely superior to the other two.

This study examines the role that clinical and social factors play in compulsory admissions to hospital in a London borough. 150 patients compulsorily admitted under a Section of the Mental Health Act 1959 were compared with 100 informally admitted patients. Significant differences in social-demographic and clinical characteristics are described as well as differences in outcome on follow-up. A long-term unwillingness on the part of the compulsory patients to engage in follow-up services was evident. These differences still held when the compulsory patients were compared with a group of informal patients matched for age, sex and diagnosis. Patients referred by the police and admitted under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act showed those features associated with compulsory admission in general to the most severe degree.
Hepatitis A in New South Wales, Australia, from consumption of oysters: the first reported outbreak

Between 22 January and 4 April 1997, 467 hepatitis A cases were reported to the New South Wales Health Department, Australia. To identify the cause of the outbreak, we conducted a matched case-control study, and an environmental investigation. Among 66 cases and 66 postcode-matched controls, there was a strong association between illness and consumption of oysters (adjusted odds ratio 42; 95% confidence interval 5–379). More than two-thirds of cases reported eating oysters, including one third of cases and no controls who reported eating oysters in the Wallis Lake area. A public warning was issued on 14 February, and Wallis Lake oysters were withdrawn from sale. Hepatitis A virus was subsequently identified in oyster samples taken from the lake. Hepatitis A virus poses a special risk to consumers who eat raw oysters because it can survive for long periods in estuaries and cause severe disease.
Petrology and geochemistry of the Kruuse Fjord Gabbro Complex, East Greenland

The Kruuse Fjord Gabbro Complex is a composite intrusion of layered gabbro and troctolite with subordinate ultramafic rocks and minor trondhjemitic bodies. It was emplaced into Archaean continental crust of East Greenland during early Tertiary rifting of Greenland from Eurasia. The work to date has identified an outer gabbro series and an inner troctolite series, and these are separated by a narrow zone of trondhjemitic intrusions. In the southeast, the partially crystallized cumulates of the gabbro series were intruded by a lenticular, ultramafic pluton 800 m in thickness. Volumetrically minor, syenite–trachyandesite net-veined dykes and later, diabase dykes cross-cut the plutonic rocks. Structural and topographic features suggest that the layered rocks were affected by synmagmatic subsidence and deformation but not by monoclinal coastal flexure.
The gabbro series is composed of a marginal gabbro unit, about 20 m wide, bordering more than a 2 km thickness of layered olivine and magnetite gabbro cumulates. The marginal gabbro is interpreted to be chilled magma. The layered cumulates are the product of repeated injections of magma that fractionated in an open-system magma chamber. Anorthositic and troctolitic layers in the lower part of the sequence may represent inputs of magma and suggest that the order of cumulus mineral crystallization was (1) plagioclase (An39–85), (2) olivine (Fo46–82), (3) augite (Wo28–47En39–58Fs8–18 ) and (4) magnetite. The disappearance of cumulus magnetite and a reversal in mineral compositions at 1.5 km from the base of the succession suggests a major input of magma occurred at this height. In the troctolite series, the composition of cumulus minerals, mineral crystallization sequence and style of emplacement are similar to those in the gabbro series. The ultramafic pluton is composed of coarse-grained wehrlite, olivine melagabbro and troctolite that were formed by at least three injections of magma. The typical mineral crystallization sequence was (1) cumulus chromite and olivine (Fo84–88); (2) poikilitic chrome diopside (Wo29–51En43–63Fs3–13 ); and (3) intercumulus plagioclase (An75–90), phlogopite, apatite and localized disseminated sulphides containing Au and platinum-group elements.
Comparison of crystallization sequences and the major and trace element compositions of clinopyroxene suggests that the gabbroic and troctolitic rocks formed from a magma represented by the chilled marginal gabbro, a tholeiitic basalt magma similar to E-MORB, whereas the ultramafic rocks formed from a magma that was relatively enriched in incompatible trace elements and volatiles. The association of these two magma types is an example of bimodal mafic–ultramafic magmatism in a rifting environment.
The Role of 36Cl and 14C Measurements in Australian Groundwater Studies

An Accelerator Mass Spectrometry system has been developed using the 14UD tandem accelerator at the Australian National University. It has been used for 36Cl measurements on groundwater samples from the Murray Basin in southeastern Australia. Measurements of 14C have also been made on the same groundwaters. The information can be combined with stable isotope ratios and other data to illustrate the occurrence of processes such as radioactive decay and local recharge in different aquifers.
