Bending and elongation have been some of the most studied motions in soft actuators due to the variety of their applications. For that matter, multi-DOF actuators have been developed with the purpose to generate different movements in a single actuator, mainly bending.
However, these actuators are still limited in mobility range, and some of them do not perform continuous curvatures. This paper presents the design, characterisation and implementations of a multi-DOF soft pneumatic module. The internal structure of the proposed module is composed of four channels, which generate bending in several directions. The finite element method analysis demonstrates that the actuator performs continuous curvatures for different pressure values. We present a repeatable and easy manufacturing process using the casting technique, considering the material Ecoflex 00-50; as well as the kinematic model of the actuator, taking into consideration two bending Degrees of Freedom (DOFs). Furthermore, we performed bending characterisation for all possible combinations of the four channels via computer vision, demonstrating a wide mobility range and performing continuous curvatures. Additionally, we evaluated the kinematic model with characterisation data, obtaining the angular and cartesian relationship between the pressure and continuous curvatures. On the other hand, the authors propose the design of a modular soft manipulator based on two multi-DOF modules. The kinematic model is reported. In addition, we implement a motion sequence in the manipulator to pick and place tasks.

The lack of specialized personnel and assistive technology to assist in rehabilitation therapies is one of the challenges facing the health sector today, and it is projected to increase. For researchers and engineers, it represents an opportunity to innovate and develop devices that improve and optimize rehabilitation services for the benefit of society. Among the different types of injuries, hand injuries occur most frequently. These injuries require a rehabilitation process in order for the hand to regain its functionality. This article presents the fabrication and instrumentation of an end-effector prototype, based on a five-bar configuration, for finger rehabilitation that executes a natural flexion-extension movement. The dimensions were obtained through the gradient method optimization and evaluated through Matlab. Experimental tests were carried out to demonstrate the prototype’s functionality and the effectiveness of a five-bar mechanism acting in a vertical plane, where gravity influences the mechanism’s performance. Position control using fifth-order polynomials with via points was implemented in the joint space. The design of the end-effector was also evaluated by performing a theoretical comparison, calculated as a function of a real flexion-extension trajectory of the fingers and the angle of rotation obtained through an IMU. As a result, controlling the two degrees of freedom of the mechanism at several points of the trajectory assures the end-effector trajectory and therefore the fingers’ range of motion, which helps for full patient recovery.

Andean blackberry (Rubus glaucus Benth.) is an emerging fruit crop with significant commercial potential. Despite its growing popularity, basic research about its genetic resources and breeding remains insufficient. The aim of this study was to assess the genetic diversity of Andean blackberry cultivars and related berries species from the main production areas in Ecuador. We analysed a total of 106 samples and performed DNA screening with different molecular markers: random-amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs), inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSRs) and a set of representative samples with amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs). The tested RAPD primers did not reveal any differentiation among accessions identified as R. glaucus, however one ISSR primer was useful to find polymorphisms allowing the selection of 29 accessions for the analysis with AFLP markers. AFLP-M13 technology was used for screen genetic variations among these accessions and eight wild Rubus accessions. We scored 203 bands using five primer combinations; out of these 152 were informative in R. glaucus. AFLP markers clearly distinguish R. glaucus from the screened wild Rubus species, also an unexpected genetic structure was revealed among R. glaucus cultivars. This genetic differentiation and detection of admixed genotypes suggest a possible introgression of wild Rubus species in R. glaucus. Our findings are relevant for blackberry genetic breeding and use of these genetic resources.

Triclosan (TCS) adsorption behavior by a modified zeolite with Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) was evaluated factoring in pH, contact time, and TCS initial concentration in a batch system. Natural clinoptilolite-type zeolite from Sonora, Mexico was conditioned with a sodium chloride solution, and, subsequently, modified with CTAB. All the zeolites were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and the Zero Point Charge (pHZPC). It was found that the morphological and structural properties of natural zeolite were not affected after treatment with cationic surfactant. Furthermore, adsorption process efficiency was enhanced by the presence of CTAB, obtaining TCS maximum adsorption capacity at an optimal pH of 9.0. In this context, the positively charged surface of the modified zeolite and the anionic triclosan species present were decisive. Kinetics data were well adjusted to a pseudo-second order model with a TCS adsorption capacity of 1.430 ± 0.051 mg g-1 at an equilibrium time of 18 h. Isotherm results were best adjusted to the Langmuir model with a qmax = 2.027 mg g-1 using an initial Co concentration of 18.0 mg L-1, and reaching an equilibrium Ce concentration of 0.559 mg L-1. The mechanism for the adsorption of TCS by CTAB-modified zeolite was proposed to be electrostatic attractions between the group of partial positive charge of CTAB and the anionic species of triclosan. Consequently, CTAB-modified zeolites could be used as effective adsorbents for triclosan removal.

The present study investigates the adsorption of fluorides (F) by a hydrotalcite MgFe (HT MgFe) and an iron-based metal oxide (MgFe oxide). Both materials were synthesized by the coprecipitation method and were calcined at the same temperature HT MgFe, HTC MgFe, oxide MgFe and oxide MgFeC. Both solids were characterized by the XRD technique. Materials showed typical crystalline forms; in the case of HT MgFe, an octahedral crystalline form and for the oxide MgFe cubic crystalline form, the analysis of the BET method classifies the materials as mesoporous. In the adsorption study, it was determined that the optimal pH for adsorption is 7. Regarding the adsorption kinetics, the HTC MgFe and oxide MgFeC samples were adjusted to the pseudo-second order model, which describes the process as chemiadsorption; meanwhile, for the samples, isotherms were adjusted to the Langmuir model, which describes the material as homogeneous with a strong interaction between the sorbate and the sorbent.

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is a hematophagous ectoparasite of major importance for the livestock industry. It shows a remarkable ability to survive over long periods without feeding. However, the mechanisms used to endure long-term starvation are poorly understood. It is believed that autophagy, a process of intracellular protein degradation, may play a significant role to confront adverse environmental conditions. To advance our understanding of autophagy in R. microplus, in the present study we report the molecular characterization of three autophagy-related (ATG) genes, namely, RmATG3, RmATG4 and RmATG6, as well as their expression profiles in different developmental stages and organs of the parasite. The deduced amino acid sequences derived from the characterized gene sequences were subjected to Basic Local Alignment Search Tool analysis. The testing produced significant alignments with respective ATG proteins from Haemaphysalis longicornis and Ixodes scapularis ticks. Real-time polymerase chain reaction assays revealed that RmATG4 and RmATG6 transcripts were elevated in egg and ovary tissue, when compared with larva and midgut samples, while RmATG3 expression in midgut was 2-fold higher than in egg, larva and ovary samples.

This paper introduces a novel 6-DOF parallel manipulator, which is composed of two 3-RUS parallel manipulators that share a common three-dimensional moving platform. Semi-analytical form solutions are easily obtained to solve the forward displacement analysis of the robot using the non-planar geometry of the moving platform, whereas the velocity, acceleration, and singularity analyses are performed using screw theory. A case study is included to show the application of the kinematic model, which is verified with the aid of a commercially available software. Simple kinematic analysis and reduced singular regions are the main benefits of the proposed parallel manipulator.

The effect of high-pressure treatment (400, 500 and 650 MPa) on the structure and activity of bovine lactoferrin in different iron-saturation forms has been studied by several techniques. The structural changes produced in lactoferrin by high-pressure were analysed by differential scanning calorimetry and fluorescence spectroscopy, and the immunoreactivity by ELISA. The effect of high-pressure was also studied on some biological properties of lactoferrin, such as iron binding capacity, retention of the bound iron, and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli O157:H7. Results obtained indicate that treatment at 400 MPa does not substantially modify the conformation of lactoferrin, meanwhile treatments at 500 and 650 MPa greatly affect some of its properties. With respect to the antibacterial activity, the apo and native forms of lactoferrin maintain that activity against Esch. coli only after 400 MPa treatment.

This work presents a methodology using image analysis to estimate the experimental stiffness of a parallel robot, Parallix LKF-2040, a 3-degree-of-freedom manipulator. The proposed methodology has a simple implementation and can be applied to different architectures of parallel robots. This methodology uses image analysis and camera calibration techniques to estimate compliant displacements of mobile platform produced by several loads at the end effector level, and calculate stiffness in a specific position of mobile platform. Experimental results are presented for different positions within the workspace.

This study addresses the kinematics of a six-degrees-of-freedom parallel manipulator whose moving platform is a regular triangular prism. The moving and fixed platforms are connected to each other by means of two identical parallel manipulators. Simple forward kinematics and reduced singular regions are the main benefits offered by the proposed parallel manipulator. The Input–Output equations of velocity and acceleration are systematically obtained by resorting to reciprocal-screw theory. A case study, which is verified with the aid of commercially available software, is included with the purpose to exemplify the application of the method of kinematic analysis.

Distributed Artificial Intelligence has been loosely defined in terms of computation by distributed, intelligent agents. Although a variety of projects employing widely ranging methodologies have been reported, work in the field has matured enough to reveal some consensus about its main characteristics and principles. A number of prominent projects are described in detail, and two general frameworks, the System conceptual model and the agent conceptual model, are used to compare the different approaches. The paper concludes by reviewing approaches to formalizing some of the more critical capabilities required by multi-agent interaction.

Silver antimony selenide (AgSbSe2) thin films were prepared by heating sequentially deposited antimony sulphide (Sb2S3), silver selenide (Ag2Se) and Ag thin films in close contact with a selenium thin film. Sb2S3 thin film was prepared from chemical bath containing SbCl3 and Na2S2O3, Ag2Se from the bath containing AgNO3 and Na2SeSO3 and Se thin films from an acidified solution of Na2SeSO3, at room temperature on cleaned glass substrates. Ag thin film was deposited by vacuum thermal evaporation. The annealing temperature was varied from 300-390°C in vacuum (∼10−3 Torr) for 1 h. X-ray diffraction analysis showed the films formed at 350 °C was polycrystalline AgSb(S,Se)2 or AgSbSe2 depending on selenium thin film thickness. Morphology of these films was analyzed using Atomic Force Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy. The elemental analysis was done using Energy Dispersive X-ray technique. Optical characterization of the thin films was done by optical transmittance spectra. The electrical characterizations were done using Hall effect and photocurrent measurements. A photovoltaic structure: Glass/ITO/CdS/AgSbSe2/Ag was formed, in which CdS was deposited by chemical bath deposition. J-V characteristics of this PV structure showed Voc=370 mV and Jsc=0.5 mA/cm2 under illumination using a tungsten halogen lamp.
