The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of auditory feedback in a VR system planned for clinical use and to address the different factors that should be taken into account in building a bimodal virtual environment (VE). We conducted an experiment in which we assessed spatial performances in agoraphobic patients and normal subjects comparing two kinds of VEs, visual alone (Vis) and auditory–visual (AVis), during separate sessions. Subjects were equipped with a head-mounted display coupled with an electromagnetic sensor system and immersed in a virtual town. Their task was to locate different landmarks and become familiar with the town. In the AVis condition subjects were equipped with the head-mounted display and headphones, which delivered a soundscape updated in real-time according to their movement in the virtual town. While general performances remained comparable across the conditions, the reported feeling of immersion was more compelling in the AVis environment. However, patients exhibited more cybersickness symptoms in this condition. The result of this study points to the multisensory integration deficit of agoraphobic patients and underline the need for further research on multimodal VR systems for clinical use.

In this paper, we derive a lubrication model to describe the non-stationary free liquid film that is created when a vertical frame is pulled out of a liquid reservoir at a given velocity. We here focus on the case of a pure liquid, corresponding to a stress-free boundary condition at the liquid/air interfaces of the film, and thus employ an essentially extensional description of the flow. Taking into account van der Waals interactions between the interfaces, we observe that film rupture is well defined in time as well as in space, which allows us to compute the critical thickness and the film height at the moment of rupture. The theoretical predictions of the model turn out to be in quantitative agreement with experimental measurements of the break-up height of silicone oil films in a wide range of pulling velocities and supporting fibre diameters.

In plants, osmotically driven flows are believed to be responsible for translocation of sugar in the pipe-like phloem cell network, spanning the entire length of the plant – the so-called Münch mechanism. In this paper, we present an experimental and theoretical study of transient osmotically driven flows through pipes with semi-permeable walls. Our aim is to understand the dynamics and structure of a ‘sugar front’, i.e. the transport and decay of a sudden loading of sugar in a water-filled pipe which is closed in both ends. In the limit of low axial resistance (valid in our experiments as well as in many cases in plants) we show that the equations of motion for the sugar concentration and the water velocity can be solved exactly by the method of characteristics, yielding the entire flow and concentration profile along the tube. The concentration front decays exponentially in agreement with the results of Eschrich, Evert & Young (Planta (Berl.), vol. 107, 1972, p. 279). In the opposite case of very narrow channels, we obtain an asymptotic solution for intermediate times showing a decay of the front velocity as M−1/3t−2/3 with time t and dimensionless number M ~ ηκL2r−3 for tubes of length L, radius r, permeability κ and fluid viscosity η. The experiments (which are in the small M regime) are in good quantitative agreement with the theory. The applicability of our results to plants is discussed and it is shown that it is probable that the Münch mechanism can account only for the short distance transport of sugar in plants.

U1 snRNP is required at an early stage during assembly of the spliceosome, the dynamic ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex that performs nuclear pre-mRNA splicing. Here, we report the purification of U1 snRNP particles from Drosophila nuclear extracts and the characterization of their biochemical properties, polypeptide contents, and splicing activities. On the basis of their antigenicity, apparent molecular weight, and by peptide sequencing, the Drosophila 70K, SNF, B, U1-C, D1, D2, D3, E, F, and G proteins are shown to be integral components of these particles. Sequence database searches revealed that both the U1-specific and the Sm proteins are extensively conserved between human and Drosophila snRNPs. Furthermore, both species possess a conserved intrinsic U1-associated kinase activity with identical substrate specificity in vitro. Finally, our results demonstrate that a second type of functional U1 particle, completely lacking the U1/U2-specific protein SNF and the associated protein kinase activity, can be isolated from cultured Kc cell or Canton S embryonic nuclear extracts. This work describes the first characterization of a purified Drosophila snRNP particle and reinforces the view that their activity and composition, with the exception of the atypical bifunctional U1-A/U2-B″ SNF protein, are highly conserved in metazoans.

We extend the Lindeberg method for the central limit theorem to strongly mixing sequences. Here we obtain a generalization of the central limit theorem of Doukhan, Massart and Rio to nonstationary strongly mixing triangular arrays. The method also provides estimates of the Lévy distance between the distribution of the normalized sum and the standard normal.
