Background: Based on the vulnerability model, several studies indicate that low self-esteem seems to contribute to depressive symptoms. Aims: The aim of this study was to treat depressive symptoms in a cognitive behavioural group therapy, focusing on the enhancement of self-esteem, and to explore co-variation in depressive symptoms and the level of self-esteem. Method: The Multidimensional Self-esteem Scale (MSWS) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were administered to 147 psychiatric in-patients with current depressive symptoms due to an affective disorder (major depression, bipolar I, dysthymia). Self-esteem was measured pre-treatment (t0) and post-treatment (t4, after 5 weeks of eight group sessions); the BDI was applied weekly. A linear mixed growth analysis was conducted to estimate the change in depressive symptoms including interactions with self-esteem. Results: Within the 5 weeks of group therapy, depressive symptoms showed a linear decline, which was stronger for patients with higher gains in self-esteem between t0 and t4. Self-esteem at t0 was unrelated to the change in depression but predicted self-esteem at t4. Conclusions: Treating depressive symptoms in a cognitive behavioural group therapy in a naturalistic setting might have a positive effect on the process of recovery. Moreover, depressive symptoms and level of self-esteem seemed to co-vary.

A 24 year old woman with a 15 year history of intractable seizures underwent resection of a small low grade astrocytoma of the right mesial frontal lobe. The tumor arose beneath a benign scalp nevus that had been treated in infancy with radium patches and focal x-irradiation. Neuropathological changes within the tumor were compatible with radiation injury. Meningiomas and sarcomas complicate cranial irradiation but the evidence that gliomas do so is less convincing. Our observations support an association between radiation exposure and the subsequent development of glial tumors.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a common autosomal dominant disorder caused by heterozygotic inactivation of the NF1 tumor suppressor gene at 17q11.2. The associated phenotypes are highly variable, and modifying genes have been proposed to explain at least in part the intriguing expressivity. Given that haploinsufficiency of the NF1 gene product neurofibromin is responsible for some of the clinical manifestations, variations in expression of the wildtype NF1 allele might modify the phenotype. We therefore investigated epigenetic molecular modifications that could result in variable expression of the normal NF1 allele. To exclude confounding by DNA sequence variations, we analyzed monozygotic twin pairs with NF1 who presented with several discordant features. We fine-mapped the methylation pattern of a nearly 1 kb NF1 promoter region in lymphocytes of 8 twin pairs. All twin pairs showed significant intra-pair differences in methylation, especially of specific promoter subregions such as 5'UTR, exon 1 and intron 1 (+7 to +622), transcription factor binding sites and promoter elements like NF1HCS. Furthermore, we detected significant intra-pair differences in cytosine methylation for the region from -249 to -234 with regard to discordance for optic glioma with a higher grade of methylation in glioma cases. In conclusion, our findings of epigenetic differences of the NF1 promoter in leukocytes within mono zygotic twin pairs may serve as a proof of principle for other tissues. The results point towards a role of methylation patterns of the normal NF1 allele for expression differences and for modification of the NF1 phenotype.

Different methods for Na incorporation are known for the use of Na-free substrates like stainless steel or polyimide foil. In this work Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) absorber layers with different amounts of Na are investigated. The CIGS samples were prepared via a roll-to-roll deposition process with ion beam assistance (Solarion) and by a multi-stage low temperature co-evaporation process (HZB). Na was either incorporated via in-situ co-evaporation of NaF (for roll-to-roll deposition) or by a Na-containing precursor (for multi-stage deposition). With increasing amounts of Na an increase of VOC is observed for both deposition tech-niques. In contrast, within the deposition parameters used, jSC decreases with increasing Na amount for co-evaporation of NaF while it seems unaffected when using a NaF precursor layer. The elemental depth profiles of the different CIGS thin films were studied via secondary ion mass spectroscopy and were found to depend strongly on the deposition technique. It seems that beneficial effects of the addition of Na are independent of the method of in-corporation, even if the distribution of Na in the CIGS layer is different due to different methods of incorporation and CIGS deposition processes.

Monolithic image sensors based on Thin Film on CMOS (TFC) Technology are becoming more and more attractive as an alternative solution to conventional active pixel sensors (APS). Imager with high sensitivity, high dynamic coupled with low dark current values (10-100 pA/cm2 @ 104 V/cm) have been developed. However, issues such as light-induced degradation and image lag hinder the commercial development of a-Si:H based image sensors. The problem of image lag is caused by residual current due to the release of trapped charges after the switch off of the illumination.
In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of the transient behavior of the photocurrent in a-Si:H photodiodes deposited on glass, as well as in corresponding diodes implemented in a TFC image sensor when illumination is switched off or periodically varied. The influence of the pixel architecture for two different cases is also analyzed: One setup reproduces the typical 3 transisor APS pixel architecture behavior, in which the bias voltage of the diode varies with the photogenerated charge while the second setup keeps a constant bias voltage applied to the diode by using a charge integrator.
The influence of the light-induced defect creation on the performance of the sensors is also presented and discussed.
