Two-dimensional analysis of ice ridging in the Beaufort Sea using aerial photography

Aerial photography was obtained for the Beaufort Sea north of Tuktoyaktuk. The flight path covered two distinct ice zones over a 15.5 km transect extending perpendicular to the coast, yielding fifty-nine photographs at a scale of 1 : 2000. The process of ridge extraction was automated using a series of computer algorithms for image filtering, edge detection and edge linking. Examples from two different sections along the transect are chosen for presentation: (a) a heavily ridged area, and (b) an area with one dominant linear ridge feature that separates ice cover of different age. Two parameters used in the automated process, a minimum edge gradient and minimum number of connected pixels said to form a continuous ridge segment, influence the number, length and spatial pattern of extracted ridges. Direct one-to-one correlations between manually interpreted ridges from photographs and the algorithm extracted ridges from digital data are not always possible. However, results indicate that the automated ridge extraction procedure reliably characterizes the overall direction and density of the ice ridges. The distribution of the ice-ridge directions is estimated from circular (angular) histograms constructed directly from the digital data. Analysis of the Beaufort Sea transect reveals that the ice ridging is strongly anisotropic, with a principal direction parallel to the local coastline.

Epstein Barr virus (EBV) infects 95% of the global population and is associated with up to 2% of cancers globally. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody levels to EBV have been shown to be heritable and associated with developing malignancies. We, therefore, performed a pilot genome-wide association analysis of anti-EBV IgG traits in an African population, using a combined approach including array genotyping, whole-genome sequencing and imputation to a panel with African sequence data. In 1562 Ugandans, we identify a variant in human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DQA1, rs9272371 (p = 2.6 × 10−17) associated with anti-EBV nuclear antigen-1 responses. Trans-ancestry meta-analysis and fine-mapping with European-ancestry individuals suggest the presence of distinct HLA class II variants driving associations in Uganda. In addition, we identify four putative, novel, very rare African-specific loci with preliminary evidence for association with anti-viral capsid antigen IgG responses which will require replication for validation. These findings reinforce the need for the expansion of such studies in African populations with relevant datasets to capture genetic diversity.

The effect of tip geometry on discharge coefficient and heat transfer is investigated both experimentally and numerically using idealised models of an unshrouded rotor blade. A flat tip was compared with two squealer-type geometries (a cavity and suction-side squealer) under the transonic conditions expected in the gas turbine engine. Heat transfer measurements were performed using a transient liquid crystal technique while a duplicate test section was used for measuring the pressure field. Computations were carried out using an unstructured, fully compressible, three-dimensional RANS (Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes) solver. Initial computations performed using a low Reynolds number k-ε model demonstrated the inability of the model to predict the Nusselt number with reasonable accuracy. Further computations performed using a low Reynolds number k-ω model improved the predictions dramatically. The computed discharge coefficient and the average Nusselt number over the blade tip agreed well with the experiments. Three upstream-total to exit-static pressure ratios were used to create a range of engine-representative Mach numbers. Both experimental and numerical studies at the lower pressure ratio of 1·3 (exit Mach number ~ 0·65) established the cavity geometry as the best performer from an aerodynamic perspective by reducing the discharge through the tip. However, from the heat transfer perspective, both the peak Nusselt number and the average heat transfer to the tip were higher than the flat tip. At the higher pressure ratios of 1·85 and 2·27 (corresponding to exit Mach numbers ~ 0·98 and 1·12) the discharge coefficient and heat transfer to the tip increases. This paper explores the fluid dynamics associated with these flows and shows that the highest heat transfer is caused by reattachment and flow impingement. The fluid dynamic computations provide insight into the experimental measurements and were successfully compared with simple analytical models.

With the changing distribution of infectious diseases, and an increase in the burden of non-communicable diseases, low- and middle-income countries, including those in Africa, will need to expand their health care capacities to effectively respond to these epidemiological transitions. The interrelated risk factors for chronic infectious and non-communicable diseases and the need for long-term disease management, argue for combined strategies to understand their underlying causes and to design strategies for effective prevention and long-term care. Through multidisciplinary research and implementation partnerships, we advocate an integrated approach for research and healthcare for chronic diseases in Africa.

Two-stage screening for psychiatric disorder was carried out with a sample of 99 male and 95 female outpatients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, using the General Health Questionnaire and the Clinical Interview Schedule. The estimated prevalence of psychiatric disorder in this sample was 18%: only 28% of the psychiatric morbidity so identified was detected by physicians. In contrast, physicians rated 10% of the sample as psychiatric ‘cases’ using a simple 6-point scale.

Background
Personality disorder (PD) in psychosis is poorly studied. As PD can affect outcome in mental disorders, it is important to understand its prevalence in order to plan services, understand prognosis more fully and maximize management options.
MethodLiterature searching revealed 3972 potential papers. Twenty papers including 6345 patients were included in the final analysis. There was great variation in prevalence and multilevel modelling was used to identify possible reasons for this heterogeneity.
ResultsThe prevalence of PD varied from 4.5% to 100%. Multilevel analysis suggested country of study, study type, the instruments used to diagnose PD and patient care correlated with the prevalence data explaining the study level heterogeneity, with 34.2, 33.4, 17.0 and 4.5% by each variable respectively. Personality studies in Canada and Sweden reported lower PD prevalence, whereas in Spain it was higher than the multinational study. Compared with randomized controlled trials, case-control studies reported lower prevalence [odds ratio (OR)=0.35, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.15–0.79] and observational studies higher prevalence (OR 70.5, 95% CI 8.5–583). Primary-care patients were less likely to be diagnosed (OR 0.02, 95% CI 0–0.19) than hospital patients, and out-patients had higher prevalence (OR 12.5, 95% CI 1.77–88.6).
ConclusionsThe reported prevalence of PD in schizophrenia varies significantly. Statistical modelling suggests care, country, study type and diagnostic tools for PD all bias prevalence rates. The number of papers reaching the inclusion criteria, the relative paucity of information and the difficulties in developing an accurate statistical model limited interpretation from the study.

The recent introduction of dual inlaid Cu and oxide based interconnects within sub-0.25μm CMOS technology has delivered higher performance and lower power devices. Further speed improvements and power reduction may be achieved by reducing the interconnect parasitic capacitance through integration of low-k interlevel dielectric (ILD) materials with Cu. This paper demonstrates successful multi-level dual inlaid Cu/low-k interconnects with ILD permittivities ranging from 2.0 to 2.5. Integration challenges specific to inorganic low-k and Cu based structures are discussed. Through advanced CMP process development, multi-level integration of porous oxide materials with moduli less than 0.5 GPa is demonstrated. Parametric data and isothermal annealing of these Cu/ low-k structures show results with yield comparable to Cu/oxide based interconnects.

Background
The roofless have not been previously surveyed in detail looking specifically at their psychiatric status.
MethodAll roofless people in a discrete area were interviewed in their ‘skippers’ using a semi-structured interview. Other roofless people helped in case finding and diagnostic validity was confirmed using a computerised case register.
ResultsSixty-five people were interviewed. High rates of substance abuse (n = 48, 75%), and very low rates of psychotic illness (n = 2, 3%) were found. High rates of serious physical morbidity, of imprisonment and of being the victim of a crime were found.
ConclusionThe roofless have multiple severe medical, social, and psychiatric problems. These all must be addressed when considering the provision of services.

The neurofibromatoses consist of at least two distinct autosomal dominant hereditary disorders. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is due to a lesion on chromosome 17q. Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is caused by a defect on chromosome 22q. The hallmark of NF2 is the development, in the second and third decades, of bilateral acoustic neuromas. NF1 is characterized by the appearance of cafe-au-lait spots and neurofibromas in addition to iris hamartomas, or Lisch nodules, of the eye, during the first and second decades.
Ten families were personally studied. A total of 16 members were found to be affected with NF2. A protocol for evaluation and review of subjects and relatives of NF2 families is proposed. A team approach, coordinating the expertise of multiple specialties is recommended.

Summary
Introduction
All laser interferometers rely on measuring the strain in space caused by a gravitational wave, sensitivities of the order of 10–22 over millisecond timescales being required to allow a good probability of detection.
In principle the strain as monitored by the change in separation of two test masses hung as pendulums can be measured against the wavelength of light from a stable source, but the degree of wavelength or frequency stability required of the source is unreasonably high. It is much more conceivable to measure the distance between test masses along an arm with respect to the distance between similar masses along a perpendicular arm. This is particularly appropriate since the interaction of a gravitational wave is quadrupole in nature and so can cause an opposite sign of length change in the two arms. The measurement of a differential length change of this type when performed by interferometry puts much less demand in principle on the frequency stability of the illuminating laser light – since a Michelson interferometer is insensitive to changes in the wavelength of the light used if the path lengths are equal. However, in practice a fairly high degree of frequency stability is required. In the case of optical delay lines in the arms of a Michelson interferometer this is a result of the difficulty in achieving equal path lengths and of some light being scattered back early without completing the full number of reflections (Billing et al, 1983).
