The Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO), which will be launched onboard the Lomonosov spacecraft, contains two crucial instruments: UFFO Burst Alert & Trigger Telescope (UBAT) for detection and localization of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and the fast-response Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) designed for the observation of the prompt optical/UV counterparts. Here we discuss the in-space calibrations of the UBAT detector and SMT telescope. After the launch, the observations of the standard X-ray sources such as pulsar in Crab nebula will provide data for necessary calibrations of UBAT. Several standard stars will be used for the photometric calibration of SMT. The celestial X-ray sources, e.g. X-ray binaries with bright optical sources in their close angular vicinity will serve for the cross-calibration of UBAT and SMT.

The Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) Pathfinder for Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) consists of two telescopes. The UFFO Burst Alert & Trigger Telescope (UBAT) handles the detection and localization of GRBs, and the Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) conducts the measurement of the UV/optical afterglow. UBAT is equipped with an X-ray detector, analog and digital signal readout electronics that detects X-rays from GRBs and determines the location. SMT is equipped with a stepping motor and the associated electronics to rotate the slewing mirror targeting the GRBs identified by UBAT. First the slewing mirror points to a GRB, then SMT obtains the optical image of the GRB using the intensified CCD and its readout electronics. The UFFO Data Acquisition system (UDAQ) is responsible for the overall function and operation of the observatory and the communication with the satellite main processor. In this paper we present the design and implementation of the electronics of UBAT and SMT as well as the architecture and implementation of UDAQ.

The UFFO (Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory) is a GRB detector on board the Lomonosov satellite, to be launched in 2013. The GRB trigger is provided by an X-ray detector, called UBAT (UFFO Burst Alarm & Trigger Telescope), which detects X-rays from the GRB and then triggers to determine the direction of the GRB and then alerts the Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) to turn in the direction of the GRB and record the optical photon fluxes. This report details the calibration of the two components: the MAPMTs and the YSO crystals and simulations of the UBAT. The results shows that this design can observe a GRB within a field of view of ±35° and can trigger in a time scale as short as 0.2 – 1.0 s after the appearance of a GRB X-ray spike.
Epidemiological analysis of critically ill adult patients with pandemic influenza A(H1N1) in South Korea

A total of 245 patients with confirmed 2009 H1N1 influenza were admitted to the intensive-care units of 28 hospitals (South Korea). Their mean age was 55·3 years with 68·6% aged >50 years, and 54·7% male. Nine were obese and three were pregnant. One or more comorbidities were present in 83·7%, and nosocomial acquisition occurred in 14·3%. In total, 107 (43·7%) patients received corticosteroids and 66·1% required mechanical ventilation. Eighty (32·7%) patients died within 30 days after onset of symptoms and 99 (40·4%) within 90 days. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the clinician's decision to prescribe corticosteroids, older age, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score and nosocomial bacterial pneumonia were independent risk factors for 90-day mortality. In contrast with Western countries, critical illness in Korea in relation to 2009 H1N1 was most common in older patients with chronic comorbidities; nosocomial acquisition occurred occasionally but disease in obese or pregnant patients was uncommon.

In situ HREM Study on the Thermal Stability of Atomic Layer Epitaxy Grown InAs/GaAs Quantum Dots

Self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) were grown by the atomic layer epitaxy technique and the structure and the thermal stability of QDs have been studied by using high resolution electron microscopy with in-situ heating experiment capability. The QDs were found to form a hemispherical structure with {136} side facet in the early stage of growth. The average height and diameter of the QD were found to be ∼ 5.5 nm and ∼ 23 nm, respectively. Upon capping by GaAs layer, however, the apex structure of QD changed to a flat one. In-situ heating experiment within TEM revealed that the uncapped QD remained stable until 580°C. However, at temperature above 600°C, the QD structure became flat due to the fast decrease of QD height. After flattening, the atoms diffused from the InAs QD to the GaAs substrate, resulting in the total collapse. The density of the QD decreased abruptly by this collapse and most QDs disappeared at above 600°C.

Optical and structural properties of InGaN/GaN quantum wells having growth interruption were investigated using high-resolution x-ray diffraction, photoluminescence and transmission microscopy. InxGa1−xN/GaN (x>0.25) six pair quantum wells used in this study were grown on c- plane sapphire by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The growth interruption was carried out by closing the group-III metal organic sources before and after growth of InGaN quantum well layers. With increasing the interruption time, the quantum dot-like region and well thickness decreases due to indium re-evaporation or thermal etching effect. As a result, PL peak position is blue-shifted and intensity is reduced. The size and number of V-defect did not vary with interruption time. The interruption time is not directly related with formation of the defect. The V-defect in quantum wells originates at threading dislocations and inversion domain boundaries due to higher misfit strain.

GaN films have been grown atop Si-terminated 3C-SiC intermediate layer on Si(111) substrates using low pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (LP-MOCVD). The SiC intermediate layer was grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using tetramethylsilane (TMS) as the single source precursor. The Si terminated SiC surface was obtained by immediately flow of SiH4 gas after growth of SiC film. LP-MOCVD growth of GaN on 3C-SiC/Si(111) was carried out with trimethylgallium (TMG) and NH3. Single crystalline hexagonal GaN layers can be grown on Si terminated SiC intermediate layer using an AlN or GaN buffer layer. Compared with GaN layers grown using a GaN buffer layer, the crystal qualities of GaN films with AlN buffer layers are extremely improved. The GaN films were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Full width at half maximum (FWHM) of double crystal x-ray diffraction (DCXD) rocking curve for GaN (0002) on 3C-SiC/Si(111) was 890 arcsec. PL near band edge emission peak position and FWHM at room temperature are 3.38 eV and 79.35 meV, respectively.
Effects of Post Etch Treatments on Contaminated Silicon Surface Due to Chf3/C2F6 Reactive ion Etching

The modification of silicon surface due to reactive ion etching (RIE) using a CHF3/C2F6 plasma has been characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). A flat and uniform residue layer of about 40 angstrom in thickness has been observed in cross-sectional HRTEM work. The interface is sharply defined and smooth. Neither point defect cluster nor distinct planar defect has been found in substrate silicon lattice image. This is also confirmed by comparison scaled and energy shifted silicon surface peak of a control sample with the reactive ion etched sample using ion channeling RBS. NF3, C12, and SF6 plasma treatments have been carried out to remove the residue layer. Among them, NF3 treatment has been revealed to be the most effective. With 10 seconds exposure to NF3 plasma, fluorocarbon residue film decomposes, and the remaining fluorine mostly binds to silicon; the fluorine completely disappears after the subsequent wet cleaning.
