Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy Probe is a concept for a National Aeronautics and Space Administration probe-class space mission that will achieve ground-breaking science in the fields of galaxy evolution, cosmology, Milky Way, and the Solar System. It is the follow-up space mission to Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), boosting its scientific return by obtaining deep 1–4 μm slit spectroscopy for ∼70% of all galaxies imaged by the ∼2 000 deg2 WFIRST High Latitude Survey at z > 0.5. Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy will measure accurate and precise redshifts for ∼200 M galaxies out to z < 7, and deliver spectra that enable a wide range of diagnostic studies of the physical properties of galaxies over most of cosmic history. Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy Probe and WFIRST together will produce a 3D map of the Universe over 2 000 deg2, the definitive data sets for studying galaxy evolution, probing dark matter, dark energy and modifications of General Relativity, and quantifying the 3D structure and stellar content of the Milky Way. Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy Probe science spans four broad categories: (1) Revolutionising galaxy evolution studies by tracing the relation between galaxies and dark matter from galaxy groups to cosmic voids and filaments, from the epoch of reionisation through the peak era of galaxy assembly; (2) Opening a new window into the dark Universe by weighing the dark matter filaments using 3D weak lensing with spectroscopic redshifts, and obtaining definitive measurements of dark energy and modification of General Relativity using galaxy clustering; (3) Probing the Milky Way’s dust-enshrouded regions, reaching the far side of our Galaxy; and (4) Exploring the formation history of the outer Solar System by characterising Kuiper Belt Objects. Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy Probe is a 1.5 m telescope with a field of view of 0.4 deg2, and uses digital micro-mirror devices as slit selectors. It has a spectroscopic resolution of R = 1 000, and a wavelength range of 1–4 μm. The lack of slit spectroscopy from space over a wide field of view is the obvious gap in current and planned future space missions; Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy fills this big gap with an unprecedented spectroscopic capability based on digital micro-mirror devices (with an estimated spectroscopic multiplex factor greater than 5 000). Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy is designed to fit within the National Aeronautics and Space Administration probe-class space mission cost envelope; it has a single instrument, a telescope aperture that allows for a lighter launch vehicle, and mature technology (we have identified a path for digital micro-mirror devices to reach Technology Readiness Level 6 within 2 yr). Astrophysics Telescope for Large Area Spectroscopy Probe will lead to transformative science over the entire range of astrophysics: from galaxy evolution to the dark Universe, from Solar System objects to the dusty regions of the Milky Way.

A three year study was undertaken during 2002 to 2004 from May to September to estimate abundance and density of harbour porpoises on the north coast of Anglesey, Wales, UK. There were no ecological data regarding the harbour porpoises in Anglesey waters so the ability to influence conservation measures was highly constrained.
Boat based transects using distance sampling techniques were applied so a robust estimate of density and abundance could be attained. The study area consisted of a block approximately 489 km2 extending from the east of Point Lynas to the west of South Stack on north coast of Anglesey. The study area was divided into 5 blocks consisting of 31 perpendicular transect lines to the shore. Each of the transect lines were surveyed 1–5 times by the end of the three year study.
Based on the assumption that g(0) = 1 the density of harbour porpoises for the 489 km2 study site was estimated to be 0.630 individuals/km2 (CV = 0.20) and the abundance is estimated to be 309 individuals (CV = 0.20). Heterogeneity in density and abundance was observed across the 5 blocks which showed Point Lynas and South Stack to have the highest densities. This distribution was closely associated to fine-scale oceanographic features which cause prey to be concentrated and may facilitate foraging for harbour porpoises. The study showed that Anglesey provides coastal habitats for the harbour porpoise and was the first study of this kind in North Wales, UK.

Energy stability theory has been formulated for two-dimensional buoyancy–thermocapillary convection in a layer with a free surface. The theory yields a critical Rayleigh number RE for which R < RE is a sufficient condition for stability of the layer. RE emerges from the variational formulation as an eigenvalue of a nonlinear system of Euler–Lagrange equations. For the case of small capillary number (large mean surface tension) explicit values are obtained for RE. The analogous linear-theory results for this case are obtained in terms of a critical Rayleigh number RL. These are compared. It is found that the existence of the deformable interface can lead to a stabilization relative to the case of a planar interface. This result is explained in physical terms. The energy theory is then generalized to include general flow problems having three-dimensional disturbances, non-Newtonian bulk fluids and general interfacial mechanics such as surface viscosity and elasticity.

A fluid layer that lines the inner surface of a circular tube has motion induced by axial surface-tension gradients. The lubrication equations for the system are analysed and it is found that even for thin layers the motions differ markedly from those in planar layers. The planar case serves as a class of outer solutions. These approximate solutions are modified by a boundary-layer correction where the mean surface tension is important.

Forward pricing behavior of random samples of Indiana, Nebraska, and Mississippi crop producers was analyzed using Heckman's two-step limited information maximum likelihood estimation procedure. Producers who forward priced during the 1995–1998 period generally expected to forward price in 1999 using similar techniques. Probit models were estimated for cash forward contracts and taking a direct position in futures or options separately and combined. Results provide limited support for the hypothesis that forward pricing should be analyzed as an adoption decision. Variables reflecting risk attitudes do affect the decision to use forward pricing, while variables related to economic position affect the level of forward pricing.

A vertical column of an inviscid fluid, heated uniformly from below through a horizontal rigid bottom, is studied, with focus on the dynamics of the vapour/liquid interface near the three-phase (contact) line. The interfacial motion is induced by the competing effects of liquid feeding from above and evaporative mass loss through the interface. A linearized solution is obtained that describes the location of the contact line. The solution is used to study the transition processes to and from film boiling, where part of the liquid, lying on top of a vapour layer, can spontaneously be drawn downward and touch the heated bottom. Recession or advancement of the contact line then determines whether the film boiling is sustained or broken. It is seen that the correct contact-line dynamics cannot be predicted solely from a global mass balance in the liquid column.

This paper uses thin-film asymptotics to show how a thin vapour layer can support a liquid which is heated from below and cooled from above, a process known as horizontal film boiling. This approach leads to a single, strongly-nonlinear evolution equation which incorporates buoyancy, capillary and evaporative effects. The stability of the vapour layer is analysed using a variety of methods for both saturated and subcooled film boiling. In subcooled film boiling, there is a stationary solution, a constant-thickness vapour film, which is determined by a simple heat-conduction balance. This is Rayleigh–Taylor unstable because the heavier liquid is above the vapour, but the instability is completely suppressed for sufficient subcooling. A bifurcation analysis determines a supercritical branch of stable, spatially-periodic solutions when the basic state is no longer stable. Numerical branch tracing extends this into the strongly-nonlinear regime, revealing a hysteresis loop and a secondary bifurcation to a branch of travelling waves which are stable under certain conditions. There are no stationary solutions in saturated film boiling, but the initial development of vapour bubbles is determined by directly solving the time-dependent evolution equation. This yields important information about the transient heat transfer during bubble development.

By applying a digital filtering technique to 1550 deg2 of the POSS-II in the vicinity of M31, we found two previously unidentified very low surface brightness dwarf galaxies which we designate And V and VI. Follow-up imaging with the KPNO 4-m telescope resolved these into stars easily. The V- and I- band images of And V indicate a distance similar to that of M31, and <[Fe/H]> ~ −1.5. All evidence strongly supports its classification as a dwarf spheroidal companion to M31. Data for And VI are being analyzed, but preliminary indications support a similar conclusion. Our search for more dwarfs, including follow-up observations of numerous candidates found via digital filtering, is incomplete; thus, further identifications may be forthcoming.

The expression ‘fault-fin landscape’ is proposed for topography marked by sets of blade-like fins and walls of rock, controlled by deformation band shear zones, which project metres above upland surfaces of porous sandstone. Dramatic examples occur along monoclines of Navajo Sandstone in the Colorado Plateau region of southern Utah, USA. The fins express differential rates of erosion of porous (20–25%) host sandstone relative to deformation band shear zones (<1% to 5% porosity), which are made highly resistant by collapse of porosity, cataclasis of quartz grains, and silica precipitation.
