Background
Studying phenotypic and genetic characteristics of age at onset (AAO) and polarity at onset (PAO) in bipolar disorder can provide new insights into disease pathology and facilitate the development of screening tools.
AimsTo examine the genetic architecture of AAO and PAO and their association with bipolar disorder disease characteristics.
MethodGenome-wide association studies (GWASs) and polygenic score (PGS) analyses of AAO (n = 12 977) and PAO (n = 6773) were conducted in patients with bipolar disorder from 34 cohorts and a replication sample (n = 2237). The association of onset with disease characteristics was investigated in two of these cohorts.
ResultsEarlier AAO was associated with a higher probability of psychotic symptoms, suicidality, lower educational attainment, not living together and fewer episodes. Depressive onset correlated with suicidality and manic onset correlated with delusions and manic episodes. Systematic differences in AAO between cohorts and continents of origin were observed. This was also reflected in single-nucleotide variant-based heritability estimates, with higher heritabilities for stricter onset definitions. Increased PGS for autism spectrum disorder (β = −0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), major depression (β = −0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), schizophrenia (β = −0.39 years, s.e. = 0.08), and educational attainment (β = −0.31 years, s.e. = 0.08) were associated with an earlier AAO. The AAO GWAS identified one significant locus, but this finding did not replicate. Neither GWAS nor PGS analyses yielded significant associations with PAO.
ConclusionsAAO and PAO are associated with indicators of bipolar disorder severity. Individuals with an earlier onset show an increased polygenic liability for a broad spectrum of psychiatric traits. Systematic differences in AAO across cohorts, continents and phenotype definitions introduce significant heterogeneity, affecting analyses.

Objectives:
We aimed to assess the incidence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in people with schizophrenia, to explore clinical associates with OSA and how well OSA screening tools perform in this population.
Methods:All patients registered in a community outpatient Clozapine clinic, between January 2014 and March 2016, were consecutively approached to participate. Participants were screened for OSA using at home multichannel polysomnography (PSG) and were diagnosed with OSA if the apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) was >10 events/hr. Univariate comparison of participants to determine whether AHI > 10 events/hr was associated with demographic factors, anthropometric measures and psychiatric symptoms and cognition was performed. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the commonly used sleep symptoms scales and OSA screening tools were also determined.
Results:Thirty participants were recruited, 24 men and 6 women. Mean age was 38.8 (range: 25–60), and mean body mass index (BMI) was 35.7 (range 19.9–62.1). The proportion of participants with OSA (AHI > 10 events/hr) was 40%, 18 (60%) had no OSA, 4 (13%) had mild OSA (AHI 10.1–20), zero participants had moderate OSA (AHI 20.1–30) and 8 (27%) had severe OSA (AHI > 30). Diagnosis of OSA was significantly associated with increased weight, BMI, neck circumference and systolic blood pressure. Diagnosis of OSA was not significantly associated with Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale, Montgomery Asperger’s Depression Rating Scale, Personal and Social Performance scale or Brief Assessment of Cognition for Schizophrenia scores. All OSA screening tools demonstrated poor sensitivity and specificity for a diagnosis of OSA.
Conclusion:OSA was highly prevalent in this cohort of people with schizophrenia and was associated with traditional anthropometric OSA risk factors.

Child maltreatment has been associated with various cumulative risk factors. However, little is known about the extent to which genetic and environmental factors contribute to individual differences between parents in perpetrating child maltreatment. To estimate the relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors to perpetrating maltreatment we used a parent-based extended family design. Child-reported perpetrated maltreatment was available for 556 parents (283 women) from 63 families. To explore reporter effects (i.e., child perspective on maltreatment), child reports were compared to multi-informant reports. Based on polygenic model analyses, most of the variance related to the perpetration of physical abuse and emotional neglect was explained by common environmental factors (physical abuse: c2 = 59%, SE = 12%, p = .006; emotional neglect: c2 = 47%, SE = 8%, p < .001) whereas genetic factors did not significantly contribute to the model. For perpetrated emotional abuse, in contrast, genetic factors did significantly contribute to perpetrated emotional abuse (h2 = 33%, SE = 8%, p < .001), whereas common environment factors did not. Multi-informant reports led to similar estimates of genetic and common environmental effects on all measures except for emotional abuse, where a multi-informant approach yielded higher estimates of the common environmental effects. Overall, estimates of unique environment, including measurement error, were lower using multi-informant reports. In conclusion, our findings suggest that genetic pathways play a significant role in perpetrating emotional abuse, while physical abuse and emotional neglect are transmitted primarily through common environmental factors. These findings imply that interventions may need to target different mechanisms dependings on maltreatment type.

Background
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is the deliberate and direct injuring of body tissue without suicidal intent for purposes not socially sanctioned. Few studies have examined the correlates of NSSI among young adults. This study aimed to identify predictors of lifetime and past-year NSSI, and describe motives for NSSI and disclosure of NSSI to others.
MethodInterviews were conducted annually with 1081 students enrolled in the College Life Study, a prospective longitudinal study conducted at a large public mid-Atlantic university. NSSI characteristics were assessed at Year 4. Demographic and predictor variables were assessed during Years 1 to 4. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify correlates of lifetime NSSI and predictors of past-year NSSI.
ResultsThe prevalence of past-year and lifetime NSSI was 2% and 7% respectively (>70% were female for both lifetime and past-year NSSI). Seven percent of NSSI cases self-injured once, whereas almost half self-injured six or more times. Independent predictors of past-year NSSI were maternal depression, non-heterosexual orientation, affective dysregulation and depression. Independent predictors of lifetime NSSI were depression, non-heterosexual orientation, paternal depression and female sex. One in six participants with NSSI had attempted suicide by young adulthood. The three most commonly reported motives for NSSI were mental distress, coping and situational stressors. Most (89%) told someone about their NSSI, most commonly a friend (68%).
ConclusionsThis study identified unique predictors of NSSI, which should help to elucidate its etiology and has implications for early identification and interventions.

The name “fassaite” (Werner, 1817) was originally given to the leek- to dark-green pyroxene crystals of the Fassatal, characterized by a distinct habit with the zone [110] strongly developed. Subsequent to the analytical data of Doelter (l) on the Monzoni fassaites the name has come to be applied more generally to alkali-poor aluminous pyroxenes found in metamorphosed lime-Stones and dolomites. Doelter's analyses of the Monzoni fassaites date back as far as 1877 and are chiefly remarkable for their high alumina and ferric oxide contents.

The Shaugh Moor project is concerned with an area of moorland in south Dartmoor north-east and north respectively of the villages of Shaugh Prior and Wotter (fig. 1). The physical threat to the evidence for settlement and land-use caused by the operations of the China Clay industry involved the Central Excavation Unit of the Department of the Environment from 1976 in a programme of survey, excavation and environmental studies related to the settlements, land boundaries, burial mounds and ceremonial structures that are to be found on this piece of moorland. The background to the project and its preliminary research strategy have been outlined in Paper I (Wainwright et al. 1979) and this publication describes the investigation of a stone-walled enclosure surrounding houses and other structures that was totally excavated in 1977 and 1978. Subsequent papers will describe the related archaeological and scientific investigations into the past environment and land-use of this block of moorland and its adjacent region.

The instrument is designed for the study and measurement of the optical characters of crystals and anisotropic materials. The conoscopic phenomena, over a wide area for any selected orientation of the specimen, may be brought into view on a hemispherical screen, without the use of a microscope or lens system. The parts of the interference figure retain their true angular relationships, directly displaying for observation or measurement values of 2V for any angular separation of the optic axes.

Qualitative studies of the optical properties of crystals under the polarizing microscope and refractive index measurements by immersion methods are made on slides placed upon the microscope stage. These procedures have the disadvantage that the crystals have a fixed orientation. Quantitative properties, such as optic axial angles, are measured on an accessory to the microscope, such as the universal stage, which although allowing rotation of the crystal necessitates auxiliary stereographic projection and is often considered laborious in operation and is not widely employed.

An easily constructed apparatus, giving illumination by light of any chosen colour, and of adequate purity in a narrow spectral region, has been made and found satisfactory in the determination of the optical properties of crystals.
Light of high intensity is focused on an adjustable slit, rendered approximately parallel by means of a lens, and passed through two hollow prisms containing alpha-monochloronaphthalene. In the widely divergent spectral beams the microscope moves along a calibrated arc and any desired wave-band of reasonable purity may be selected. The apparatus is illustrated in the accompanying diagram (fig. 1) and photograph (fig. 2).
A small carbon arc (A) using direct or alternating current gives adequate intensity, allowing for a narrow setting of the slit, with corresponding purity of the monochromatic beam.

The tholeiite of Kinkell (11 km. north of Glasgow G.P.O.) was described by the first author (Walker, 1930) and an analysis of its residual glass was given in a later publication (Walker, 1935). Since unaltered and separable residual glasses of basaltic rocks are rare, the Kinkell example has been referred to frequently in petrological literature. E. A. Vincent (1950) has made a detailed comparison between the Kinkell glass and a similar one from a tholeiite from Kap Daussy, east Greenland. In view of this and of the important part played by such glasses in discussions on basaltic differentiation, all the major constituents of the Kinkell rock have been isolated and analysed chemically and spectrographically. They are described below together with a fuller account of the field relations of the rock and some comments upon the significance of the new data.

Recent research on the polymorphism of calcium orthosilicate has broadened and to some extent modified the picture of the phase relations of this substance as presented in the pioneer studies of Day and Shepherd (1906) and Rankin and Wright (1915). These investigators recognized three distinct forms, α, β, and γ, related by transformation as follows: α⇄β at 1420° C. and β⇄γ, at 675° C. The high-temperature α form was described as monoclinic or triclinic and intimately twinned, the β form orthorhombic, and the low-temperature γ form as probably monoclinic. The optical properties of these α and β forms as reported are so closely similar that were it not for the twinning, regarded as diagnostic, the two forms would be distinguishable only with difficulty. This optical similarity was later found to be paralleled by a close agreement of the X-ray powder diffraction patterns of the two phases early noted by Hansen (1928) and confirmed among others by Insley (1936).

The mineral tilleyite was first discovered by Larsen and Dunham in thermally metamorphosed limestones from the contact zone at Crestmore, California. It is associated there with merwinite, wollastonite, spurrite, and gehlenite, and the rock is traversed by streaks of idocrase with grossular. The amount of tilleyite in these rocks was apparently small, but in certain thermally metamorphosed limestones from Carlingford it is abundant and some specimens are practically pure tilleyite-rocks, it has been possible, therefore, to make a more detailed optical and chemical examination of this mineral. The tilleyite occurs as subidioblastic crystals when abundant, or as rounded grains in calcite-rich rocks, or as irregular plates.

The sedimentary iron ores of Britain all contain small amounts of phosphorus which is generally present in the colloform mineral collophane. In a rather uncommon class of oolitic ironstones recently described from the Yorkshire coalfield, a crystalline phosphate was found which has now been identified as francolite and forms the subject of this paper. These oolitic ironstones occur in the immediate roofs of coal seams, are of freshwater origin, and consist of ooliths of kaolinite and isotropic clay in a groundmass of chalybite. During the later stages of their diagenesis, francolite, associated with quartz, calcite, pyrite and blonde, and much kaolinite, crystallized within the ooliths (fig. 1) and in the shrinkage cracks (fig. 2) of the ironstone, and sometimes replaced the ooliths and groundmass. The francolite is present in all of the three oolitic ironstone occurrences described from Yorkshire, and also in the similar rock from Derbyshire in the Geological Survey's collection of iron ores. Details of these localities are given in the ironstones paper. The writer has also found similar francolite in an ironstone nodule from a parting in the Mühlenbach coal seam of south Limburg, Netherlands. Although not recorded, it may be expected to occur in some of the black-band ironstones and other rocks closely associated with coal seams. The following account is based entirely on material from Robin Hood quarry, Thorpe-on-the-Hill, 4 miles south of Leeds.
