Experimental observations of supersonically flowing dusty plasmas and their interaction with an electrically biased circular cylinder are presented. Two methods for producing flowing dusty plasmas are described. The dusty plasma is produced in a DC anode glow discharge plasma. In Configuration I, a secondary dust cloud, initially formed near a biased grid, flowed away from the grid at supersonic speeds when the grid voltage was suddenly changed. In Configuration II, a pencil-like dust beam was produced using a nozzle-like (converging-diverging) electrostatic potential structure. Using Configuration I, the streaming dust encountered a biased cylinder (wire) whose axis was oriented transverse to the dust flow. The flowing dust particles were repelled by the electrostatic field of the negatively charged cylinder, and a dust void was formed around the cylinder. A detached electrohydrodynamic bow shock, akin to the Earth's magnetohydrodynamic bow shock, was formed on the upstream side of the cylinder, while an extended teardrop-shaped wake region was formed on the downstream side. Video imaging of the dust stream allowed for observations of the structure and evolution of the bow shock. Configuration II was used to produce a narrow beam of dust particles and observe how the beam was deflected around the biased cylinder. Background
Decline in social functioning occurs in individuals who later develop psychosis.
AimsTo investigate whether baseline differences in disability are present in those who do and those who do not make a transition to psychosis in a group clinically at high risk and whether disability is a risk factor for transition.
MethodProspective multicentre, naturalistic field study with an 18-month follow-up period on 245 help-seeking individuals clinically at high risk. Disability was assessed with the Disability Assessment Schedule of the World Health Organization (WHODAS–II).
ResultsAt baseline, the transition group displayed significantly greater difficulties in making new friends (z =−3.40, P = 0.001), maintaining a friendship (z =−3.00, P = 0.003), dealing with people they do not know (z =−2.28, P = 0.023) and joining community activities (z =−2.0, P = 0.05) compared with the non-transition group. In Cox regression, difficulties in getting along with people significantly contributed to the prediction of transition to psychosis in our sample (β = 0.569, s.e. = 0.184, Wald = 9.548, P = 0.002, hazard ratio (HR) = 1.767, 95% CI 1.238–2.550).
ConclusionsCertain domains of social disability might contribute to the prediction of psychosis in a sample clinically at high risk.

The recent high core gains of 29% in laser fusion experiments at the LLE Rochester are evaluated and compared with related earlier measurements where surprisingly the self-similarity model for volume compression provides a common description. This is a proof that the isentropic conditions of stagnation-free compression were mostly fulfilled at the optimized experimental gains, in contrast to highly entropy-producing shock and central spark conditions. Some projections are given of how these results may be generalized to volume ignition for the parameters of the NIF (National Ignition Facility). The proof of stagnation-free volume compression for the best laser fusion gains indicates the advantages of volume ignition, which not only is ‘robust’ and simply follows the natural adiabatic compression, but also is much less sensitive to instabilities and mixing. However, its essential advantage is that it is free from symmetry problems – in contrast to spark ignition, with its spherical detonation front.

The electrical conductivity of 3Y-TZP ceramics containing SiO2 and Al2O3 has been investigated by complex impedance spectroscopy between 500 and 1270 K. At low temperatures, the total electrical conductivity is suppressed by the grain boundary glass films. The equilibrium thickness of intergranular films is 1-2 nm, as derived using the “brick-layer” model and measured by HRTEM. A change in the slope of the conductivity Arrhenius plots occurs at the characteristic temperature Tb at which the macroscopic grain boundary resistivity has the same value as the resistivity of the grains. The temperature dependence of the conductivity is discussed in terms of a series combination of RC elements.

Since its initial report by the IBM/Purdue University group in 1990, GaAs with As precipitates (GaAs:As) has been shown by this group to exhibit unusual and useful electrical and optical properties. In this paper we review our progress in understanding the fundamental properties of this material. We have shown that both the electrical and optical properties of GaAs:As arc explained by assuming that the GaAs is of good crystalline quality and that the As precipitates act as buried Schottky barriers. This model accounts for its semi-insulating stability against both n- and p-type doping, its high-speed photoconductive behavior, and its ability to detect 1.3 micron light when it forms the “I” layer of a PIN photodiode via the internal photoemission process. Using modulation spectroscopy we clarify the fundamental differences between GaAs:As and unannealed GaAs grown at 200 C. We also show that GaAs:As used as a 1.3 micron detector in the metal-semiconductor-metal device structure format, has a photoconductive bandwidth in excess of 50 GHz.

Most modern instrumental methods of analysis depend on the use of known standards of composition for calibration. Newer analytical techniques, such as the solids mass spectrometer, laser probe and, especially, the electron-probe microanalyzer have reduced the amount of a sample which can be analyzed quantitatively to a range of about 0.1 to as small as 0.00005 μg. As a corollary to these microanalytical advances, homogeneity requirements have become severe to meet analytical standards. This paper describes a continuation of the National Bureau of Standards' effort to characterize more fully existing standards as to suitability for the new microanalytical techniques. An NBS cartridge brass sample in both the wrought (NBS-1102) and chill cast forms (NBS-C1102), as well as a low-alloy steel sample (NBS-463), have been investigated by means of electron-probe micreanalysis and optical metallography. Some 17 elements are contained in the brass, while 25 elements are found in the steel. Results for 10 elements in the steel and 6 elements in the brass are presented. In the steel, iron, nickel, copper, and silicon ate essentially distributed homogeneously at micron levels, while manganese, tantalum, niobium, zirconium, sulfur, and chromium are not. In the brass, copper and zinc are distributed homogeneously at micron levels while lead, sulfur, aluminum, and silicon are not. Electron-probe micreanalyzer results indicate that both NBS-1102 and NBS-C1102 brass are suitable for use as a calibration standard for electronprobe microanalysis as well as other microsnalyticat techniques, such as the solids mass spectrometer. The results for brass have been corroborated by a number of laboratories using the electron-probe analyzer.

In accordance with suggestions made by members of the Commission further consideration of the following topics is proposed:
(1) Improvement of the present plan for distribution of observations and computations relating to minor planets and comets, with special reference to those which depart considerably from their ephemerides.
(2) Designation of a central bureau to supervise any accepted plan for coordination of observations and computations. It is suggested that separate bureaus be established for Minor Planets and for Comets.
(3) Systematic investigations of the orbits of the recently discovered objects designated as minor planets: Reinmuth 1932 HA, and Delporte 1932 EA1( and other objects of similar interest.
(4) Financing of proposals (2) and (3).
(5) Standard equinoxes as proposed by Comrie (1950.0) and by Bower (1900.0).
(6) Designation of published residuals as observed residuals rather than referring to the epoch of the comparison star.
(7) Greater adherence to the convention “That the dates used in giving the osculation epochs of elements for comets and minor planets shall be the midnight following an integral Julian date which is exactly divisible by 40, and for ephemerides, divisible by 8 (or 4, etc.),” to facilitate intercomparison of ephemerides and elements.
(8) Inauguration of complete residuals of comets, similar to those of minor planets with provision for their continuation.
(9) Inclusion in astronomical telegrams of some information of a descriptive nature to indicate the accuracy of the measured position, in confirmation of previous action.
(10) Greater emphasis on accurate rather than on approximate positions, particularly in (9), or preliminary orbits.
