The COVID-19 pandemic abruptly changed political science higher education—shifting courses and instructors online with little preparation. What might be the long-term effects of teaching through this crisis? Combining both open-ended and forced-choice survey questions with focus-group conversations, the data reveal a picture of faculty who are doing more for students and feeling strained by the efforts. Despite the challenges of teaching online during these difficult circumstances, attitudes toward online teaching did not decline universally. Those with more experience teaching online before the pandemic held a more favorable view of online teaching when they were surveyed during the pandemic. The data also show that the emotional burden on faculty increased, with female faculty members carrying a particularly heavy load. Because online classes likely will play a major role in the future of teaching political science, understanding the pandemic’s effects—both positive and negative—is critical.

We infer the body-size scaling slope of metabolic rate in a trilobite by applying a cell-size model that has been proposed to explain metabolic scaling in living organisms. This application is especially tractable in fossil arthropods with well-preserved compound eyes because the number and size of eye facets appear to be useful proxies for the relative number and size of cells in the body. As a case study, we examined the ontogenetic scaling of facet size and number in a ∼390-Myr-old local assemblage of the trilobite Eldredgeops rana, which has well-preserved compound eyes and a wide body-size range. Growth in total eye lens area resulted from increases in both facet area and number in relatively small (presumably young) specimens, but only from increases in facet area in large (presumably more mature) specimens. These results suggest that early growth in E. rana involved both cell multiplication and enlargement, whereas later growth involved only cell enlargement. If the cell-size model is correct, then metabolic rate scaled allometrically in E. rana, and the scaling slope of log metabolic rate versus log body mass decreased from ∼0.85 to 0.63 as these animals grew. This inferred age-specific change in metabolic scaling is consistent with similar changes frequently observed in living animals. Additional preliminary analyses of literature data on other trilobites also suggest that the metabolic scaling slope was <1 in benthic species, but ∼1 in pelagic species, as has also been observed in living invertebrates. The eye-facet size (EFS) method featured here opens up new possibilities for examining the bioenergetic allometry of extinct arthropods.

Powder diffraction data are presented for 3,4-methylenedioxymethylamphetamine hydrochloride monohydrate, the hydrated form of MDMA.HCl, the drug of abuse commonly known as Ecstasy. Samples of pure MDMA.HCl were recrystallized from a variety of solvents, and powder diffraction patterns of the resulting products recorded. Data were collected at room temperature using iron-filtered CoKα radiation.

Feto-maternal vascular (PDF-M) and amniotic-maternal (PDA-M) potential differences were measured simultaneously on seven occasions in six conscious pigs of 100-106 days gestation. Resting values of PDF-M and PDA-M were not significantly different although the range was wide. Fetal intravascular injection of 20 µg adrenaline, but not of saline, was associated with a prompt reversible change, of equal magnitude, in both PDF-M and PDA-M. In some experiments polarity was reversed. Feto-amniotic potential difference did not change. There was no change in fetal plasma K+ and Na+ concentrations. Because of the simultaneous and equal alterations in PDF-M and PDA-M following adrenaline and the anatomical configuration of the pig conceptus, we conclude that the catecholamine modifiable component of PDF-M is generated by electrogenesis in the pig placenta, probably by its chorionic (trophoblastic) cell layer.

A detailed comparison between the experimental evolution of a two-dimensional soap froth and the large Q state Potts model is presented. The pattern evolution starting from identical initial conditions will be compared as well as a variety of distribution functions and correlations of the two systems. Simulations on different lattices show that the discrete lattice of the Potts model causes deviations from universal domain growth by weakening the vertex angle boundary conditions that form the basis of von Neumann's law. We show that the anisotropy inherent in a discrete lattice simulation, which masks the underlying ‘universal’ grain growth, can be overcome by increasing the range of the interaction between spins or increasing the temperature. Excellent overall agreement between the kinetics, topological distributions and domain size distributions between the low lattice anisotropy Potts-model simulations and the soap froth suggests that the Potts model is useful for studying domain growth in a wide variety of physical systems.
