A Biotype of Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua) in Tennessee Is Resistant to Inhibitors of ALS and Photosystem II

Annual bluegrass resistance to inhibitors of acetolactate synthase (ALS) and photosystem II (PSII) in managed turf has been confirmed in the southeastern United States. A biotype of annual bluegrass that had developed resistance (R) to the PSII inhibitor simazine was not controlled by POST applications of foramsulfuron or trifloxysulfuron in 2011 or 2012. In whole plant dose-response experiments, trifloxysulfuron, simazine, and indaziflam controlled a susceptible (S) population of annual bluegrass > 91% when applied POST to nontillering plants. However, trifloxysulfuron applications at 3.5 to 223 g ai ha−1 only controlled R annual bluegrass ≤ 40%. Similarly, simazine at 140 to 9,000 g ai ha−1 only controlled R annual bluegrass ≤ 20%. R annual bluegrass plants were more tolerant to indaziflam applied POST to leaf stage plants prior to tillering, as rates > 100 g ai ha−1 were needed to control R annual bluegrass ≥ 96%. No differences in the activity of ALS in R and S plants exposed to increasing foramsulfuron concentrations from 0 to 100 µM were detected suggesting that nontarget mechanisms could explain reduced efficacy of POST herbicide applications in whole plant dose-response experiments. Applications of indaziflam (35 to 70 g ha−1) and oxadiazon (2,240 to 4,500 g ai ha−1) effectively controlled R annual bluegrass when applied PRE. This biotype of R annual bluegrass is the first reported instance of a weed developing resistance to multiple modes of action in managed turf. Education is needed among turf managers regarding the consequences of exclusive use of the same herbicides for annual bluegrass control leading to the onset of herbicide resistance.

Crystal and X-ray powder diffraction data are presented for BaPbO3. The powder pattern was indexed and refined on an orthorhombic cell with a=6.0264(3)Å , b=8.5078(3)Å , c=6.0629(2)Å, Z=4, space group Imma. The phase may actually be monoclinic with space group I2/m, but no distortion from the orthorhombic cell was evident in the powder patterns, suggesting a β angle very close to 90.0°.

Rietveld quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis of the fly ash Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technologies was performed. A rutile (TiO2) internal standard was used to enable quantitation of the glass content, which ranged from 65% to 78% by weight. The GSAS Rietveld code was employed. Precision was obtained by performing six replicates of an analysis, and accuracy was estimated using mixtures of fly ash crystalline phases and an amorphous phase. The three low-calcium (ASTM Class F) fly ashes (SRM 1633b, 2689 and 2690) contained four crystalline phases: quartz, mullite, hematite, and magnetite. SRM 1633b also contained a detectable level of gypsum, which is not common for this type of fly ash. The high-calcium (ASTM Class C) fly ash, SRM 2691, had eleven crystalline phases and presented a challenge for the version of GSAS employed, which permits refinement of only nine crystalline phases. A method of analyzing different groups of nine phases and averaging the results was developed, and tested satisfactorily with an eleven-phase simulated fly ash. The results were compared to reference intensity ratio method semiquantitative analyses reported for most of these SRMs a decade ago.

While characterization of the MBH–σ* relationship in AGNs has improved due to the increase in available data and the improvement in accuracy of both MBH and σ* measurements, additional data at the high-luminosity end of the distribution of quasars are needed, as recent studies indicate that perhaps the relation steepens in this regime. To this end, we present three new measurements in objects at the high-luminosity end of the relation.

Electromagnetic shields and flux concentrators for magnetic sensors could utilize flexible and insulating composites applied using simple thin film deposition methods such as dip-coating, spin-coating, spraying, etc. As the first step towards development of composites with superior performance, efforts focused on isolating nanoparticles with large magnetizations under low fields. In this paper, we provide the results of proof-of-concept studies for two systems: metal-functionalized silicone-based materials (metal-silicone); and, Co-ferrite (Co2+1−xFe2+xFe3+2O4) nanoparticles. The metal-silicone materials studied included a polysiloxane that contained a pendant ferrocene where an optimum saturization magnetization of 5.9 emu/g (coercivity = 11 Oe) was observed. Co-ferrite nanoparticle samples prepared in this study showed unprecendented saturation magnetization (i.e., Ms > 150 emu/g) with low coercivity (Hc ∼ 10 Oe) at room temperature and offer potential application as flux concentrators.

The low temperature (ca. 300°C) deposition of antimony films by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) on glass substrates from tribenzylantimony, Bn3Sb, is described. The facile elimination of the benzyl ligands results in preferentially oriented antimony films with low carbon content. The pyrolysis, decomposition mechanism and precursor design strategies are discussed. In addition, the deposition of bismuth from tribenzylbismuth, Bn3Bi, is presented. The potential for alloy growth using these precursors is discussed. Resulting films were characterized by XRD, SEM, and AFM.

The majority of sulfide mineral patterns in the International Centre for Diffraction Data Mineral Powder Diffraction File have historically been of low quality (e.g., FN < 10 and qualitative intensities). A five-year study has resulted in upgrading approximately 20% of the poorer quality patterns and will triple the number of “star quality” patterns. This paper describes the experimental methods used to obtain these upgraded patterns. The essential role of diffraction pattern calculations and diffractogram simulations is stressed.

Calculated patterns play an essential role in X-ray powder diffraction analysis. This paper gives examples of their use in qualitative analysis for evaluating and supplementing reference patterns in the ICDD Powder Diffraction File (PDF), in quantitative analysis for calculating Reference Intensity Ratios (RIRs), in ceil parameter refinements for indexing of low-symmetry/large unit cell diffractograms, in powder pattern determination for validating intensities and recognizing preferred orientation, in new materials synthesis for verification of structure type and phase purity, and for modeling the effects of solid solution substitution.
