Mature achenes from tansy ragwort (Senecio jacobaea L. ♯3 SENJA) capitula borne on lower branches had greater average dry weights and higher percentage germination than those closer to the apex, but these higher averages were obtained because more achenes in these samples were filled. Physiological maturity was attained in ray achenes 21 days past flowering (DPF), 24 DPF in peripheral disk achenes, and 27 DPF in central disk achenes. Maximum germination occurred at 18 DPF in ray and peripheral disk achenes and at 21 DPF in central disk achenes. Neither achene type was shown to have innate dormancy. Disk and ray achenes germinated most rapidly at alternating temperatures of 30/20 C.

In a 5-week study of 22 depressed patients treated with nortriptyline, significant changes in plasma levels, both elevated and reduced, were deliberately produced in the third and fourth weeks of each patient's treatment. Correlation of plasma nortriptyline levels and changes in the severity of depression, as measured by the Hamilton Depression Scale, showed no significant relationships. The implications of the study are discussed.

Summary
The trematode flatworms that infect human beings include the schistosomes, which live in venules of the gastrointestinal or genitourinary tract, and other flukes that inhabit the bile ducts, intestines, or bronchi. The geographic distribution of each species of trematode parallels the distribution of the specific freshwater snail that serves as its intermediate host (Table 195.1). Schistosomes infect as many as 200 million persons worldwide; infections caused by the other flukes are more limited in distribution and number. Trematode infections last for years; most are subclinical, and in general only the small proportion of persons who have heavy worm burdens develop severe disease.
SCHISTOSOMIASIS
Clinical Presentation
A history of contact with possibly infested freshwater in an endemic area should prompt an evaluation for schistosomiasis, even in the absence of symptoms (Figure 195.1). Clinical manifestations that suggest the diagnosis vary according to the stage of infection. Some persons complain of intense pruritus or rash shortly after the infective cercariae penetrate the skin. Previously uninfected visitors to endemic areas may develop acute schistosomiasis, or Katayama fever, 2 to 10 weeks after exposure, as the immune system begins to respond to maturing worms and eggs. Symptoms range from mild malaise to a serum sickness-like syndrome that lasts for weeks and may be life threatening. Common features include fever, headache, abdominal pain, myalgia, dry cough, diarrhea, hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, urticaria, and marked eosinophilia.

The events of 11 September 2001 have had a profound effect on disaster planning efforts in the United States. This is true especially in the area of bioter-rorism. One of the major tenets of bioterrorism response is the vaccination of at-riskpopulations. This paper investigates the efficacy of training emergency medical services paramedics to administer vaccines in public health settings as preparation for and response to bioterrorism events and other disaster events.
The concept of vaccination administration by specially trained paramedics is not new. Various programs to provide immunizations for emergency services personnel and at-risk civilian populations have been reported.
Vaccination programs by paramedics should follow the guidelines of the National Vaccine Advisory Committee of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Thispaper compares the seven standards of the CDC guidelines to routine paramedic practice and education. It is concluded that paramedics are adequately trained to administer vaccines. However, specific training and protocols are needed in the areas of administrative paperwork and patient education. A proposed outline for a paramedic-training program is presented.

Summary
Small mammals are important components of western forest ecosystems. Their interactions with other organisms and the physical environment are complex. Small mammals are effective predators on seeds, vegetation, and insects, and may influence patterns of forest regeneration (Sullivan 1979, Christy and Mack 1984). Dispersal of seeds, mycorrhizal fungi, and nitrogen-fixing bacteria by small mammals may also affect plant diversity (Maser et al. 1978, Verts and Carraway 1998, Luoma et al. 2003). In addition, small mammals are prey for many carnivorous taxa, and changes in small-mammal abundance may affect the distribution and habitat use of their predators (Carey et al. 1992).
Understanding patterns of abundance and distribution of small mammals and how these species influence forest function and biodiversity are basic ecological problems relevant to both economic and conservation concerns. Exploration of these fundamental ecological relationships is challenging, however, because of the secretive nature of small mammals and their activities at night (e.g., deer mice (Peromyscus spp.)), below ground (e.g., gophers (Thomomys spp.) and moles (Scalopus spp.)), at the soil–vegetation interface (e.g., red-backed voles (Clethrionomys spp.) and shrews (Sorex spp.)), and in all levels of the canopy (e.g., flying squirrels (Glaucomys spp.) and tree squirrels (Tamiasciurus spp.)) (Aubry et al. 2003). In this chapter, we emphasize the forest-floor fauna, although not all species discussed confine themselves to the ground stratum (e.g., chipmunks (Tamias spp.) and woodrats (Neotoma spp.)).

Summary
Introduction
The chemistry and toxicity of tin and organotin compounds have been extensively reviewed (e.g., Blunden and Evans, 1990; Maguire, 1987, 1991; World Health Organization, 1990; and references therein). The major uses of organotin compounds are as poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) stabilizers, industrial catalysts, industrial and agricultural biocides, and wood preserving and antifouling agents. From an environmental point of view, tributyltin compounds used as antifouling agents are of most concern because of their extremely high toxicity to aquatic organisms. This chapter reviews the occurrence, persistence and toxicity of tributyltin, and its degradation products dibutyltin and monobutyltin, in fresh water environments.
Sources and environmental occurrence
The main use of tributyltin compounds, with direct introduction to water, is as antifouling agents. However, there are other pesticidal uses. In Canada, for example some tributyltin-containing pesticides are also registered for use as material preservatives, joinery wood preservatives, remedial wood preservatives, wood preservative stains, and as slimicides. In some parts of Africa, tributyltin compounds have been applied directly to water in the control of schistosomiasis, and they are used agriculturally against cotton-boll worms (Aboul Dahab, El-Sabrouti and Halim, 1990).
Butyltin species are not produced biologically, and therefore their environmental presence is due to anthropogenic input. In general the occurrence of butyltin species in the environment is a result of the use of tributyltin as an antifouling agent. However, the finding of tributyltin in a power plant discharge in Italy (Gabrielides et al., 1990), and in sewage treatment plant influents and effluents in Switzerland (Fent and Muller, 1991) and Canada (Chau, Zhang and Maguire, 1992) probably reflects slimicidal uses of tributyltin.
