Summary
In the halcyon days of post-positivisitic analytic philosophy, philosophy of religion and philosophical theology were considered by many to have been relegated to the forgotten realms of outmoded superstition they so richly deserved. Antony Flew's (1961, 1984) sophisticated recasting of David Hume's concerns over miracles and natural theology, John Mackie's (1955) stunning attack on the free will defence, R. M. Hare's (1955) sensible non-cognitive analysis of religious language, and many other enticing rebuttals of classical theism dominated the landscape and bode ill for any future progress in the philosophical defence of traditional belief.
Anyone aware of the state of analytic philosophy of religion at the start of the twenty-first century knows that the current picture could not be more radically different from that just described. Research programmes abound, and many of the philosophers conducting them profess and defend a profound belief in Western theism in general and Christianity in particular. There are many reasons for this amazing turnaround and many philosophers who share the credit, among them William Alston, Richard Swinburne and Nicholas Wolterstorff. But there can be no doubt that one of the premier champions of this team is the American philosopher Alvin Plantinga.
Alvin Carl Plantinga was born on 15 November 1932, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He received philosophy degrees from Calvin College (AB in 1954), the University of Michigan (MA in 1955), and Yale University (PhD in 1958).

Summary
Introduction
This chapter addresses the question of why the London Metropolitan Region (LMR) is home to more innovation than any other single region in the United Kingdom (UK). While functional definitions of the LMR indicate that it extends out from Greater London and incorporates most of the Outer Metropolitan Area (OMA), it is difficult to construct data sets for this precise area. Using only Greater London seriously underbounds any study of the area that functions as a whole. Therefore, for the purposes of this study, we have chosen to use the whole of the Greater South East as the LMR. This probably over-bounds London’s functional daily urban system but has the merit of clearly including the whole of the London regional economy.
We have adopted a widely used European definition of innovation. This is that ‘Innovation is the commercially successful exploitation of new technologies, ideas or methods through the introduction of new products or processes, or through the improvement of existing ones. Innovation is a result of an interactive learning process that involves often several actors from inside and outside the companies’ (European Commission DGs XIII and XVI, 1996, p 54).
The outstanding significance of the LMR with respect to innovation in the UK has been identified by a number of previous studies. These include, among others, Hilpert (1992) who showed that London is one of only ten major ‘islands of innovation’ in Europe. These are defined according to the following criteria:
• islands which are specialised in more than one of the three studied techno-scientific fields;
• islands which are covering more than 20 per cent of public R&D expenditures in the country;
• strong presence in the islands of both research institutions and enterprises;
• islands which are European ‘knots’ in the web of cooperation links (Hilpert, 1992, p iv).
The rate of innovation in the South East (SE) has been considerably higher than that for any other region in the UK since at least the 1940s. Harris (1988), for example, using a database of significant innovations held at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), University of Sussex, calculated that the level of innovation in the SE was one third higher than the UK average between 1945 and 1983. This database was developed from consultations with 400 industry experts who identified major technological developments. These were located in their respective workplaces.

The idea of industrial clusters forming the basis of regional economic growth has moved rapidly from academe to policy. This research, which forms part of the ESRC Cities: Cohesion and Competitiveness Programme, suggests that greater clarity is needed in defining and applying the concept in different regions. Several different types of clusters have already been identified. The precise basis of their relative success also seems to be different according to the degree of globalisation present and the position that regions occupy in their national hierarchies. In the case of London and the South East, the research shows that the internal characteristics of firms, the ‘pick and mix’ possibilities of a large agglomeration, and its position as an international trading gatweway, are critical for successful innovation in the region.
Is God Essentially God?

If theism is true, then there exists a being to which we appropriately refer with the term ‘God’. This point is analytic. Any object to which we appropriately refer with the term ‘God’ bears certain properties – e.g. omniscience, omnipotence and moral perfection. While the analyticity of this point may be a matter of debate, I find no problem granting its necessary truth, at least for the purposes of this paper. There are properties essential to the appropriate wearing of the title ‘God’. Does it follow from these claims that the object to which we appropriately apply the term ‘God’ bears the properties in question – omniscience, omnipotence, etc. – essentially? Is God essentially God? Or is it possible that the being to whom we refer with ‘God’ exist but not be God? Many would assume that the answers to these questions are obvious – that God is God essentially, or not at all. However, I wish to argue that there may be properties essential to Godhood, but not essential to the being that is God.

In our continuing efforts towards the design of nonlinear (NLO) optical chromophore containing polypeptides we present an integrated computational approach, in which the design of biomolecular materials with defined secondary and tertiary structures is investigated by means of novel predictive tools, while the effects of the nonlinear optical chromophores are studied with molecular dynamics simulations. A neural network that was trained to predict the spatial proximity of Cα atoms that are less than a given threshold apart, is applied. The double-iterated Kalman filter (DIKF) technique is then employed with a constraints set that includes these pairwise atomic distances, and the distances and angles that define the structure as it is known from the protein's sequence. The results for test cases, particularly Crambin and genetically engineered Eglin-C, demonstrate that this integrated approach is useful for structure prediction at an intermediate resolution. Defined structural motifs of NLO chromophore containing polypeptides are investigated by using molecular dynamics techniques, particularly for the design of coil coiled amphiphatic biopolymers.

If the contemporary rebirth of the ontological argument had its conception in Norman Malcolm's discovery of a second Anselmian argument ([2]) it had its full-term delivery as a healthy philosophical progeny with Alvin Plantinga's sophisticated modal version presented in the tenth chapter of The Nature of Necessity ([8]). This latter argument has been the centre of a huge body of literature over the last fifteen years, and deservedly so. One is impressed that this version of Anselm's jewel is valid and sound if any is.
