The history of maize in Central America and surrounding areas has implications for the slow transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture. The spread of early forms of domesticated maize from southern Mexico across Mesoamerica and into South America has been dated to about 8,700–6,500 years ago on the basis of a handful of studies relying primarily on the analysis of pollen, phytoliths, or starch grains. Recent genomic data from southern Belize have been used to identify Archaic period south-to-north population movements from lower Central America, suggesting this migration pattern as a mechanism that introduced genetically improved maize races from South America. Gradually, maize productivity increased to the point that it was suitable for use as a staple crop. Here we present a summary of paleoecological data that support the late and uneven entry of maize into the Maya area relative to other regions of Central America and identify the Pacific coastal margin as the probable route by which maize spread southward into Panama and South America. We consider some implications of the early appearance of maize for Late Archaic populations in these areas; for example, with respect to the establishment of sedentary village life.

Colleges and universities around the world engaged diverse strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Baylor University, a community of ˜22,700 individuals, was 1 of the institutions which resumed and sustained operations. The key strategy was establishment of multidisciplinary teams to develop mitigation strategies and priority areas for action. This population-based team approach along with implementation of a “Swiss Cheese” risk mitigation model allowed small clusters to be rapidly addressed through testing, surveillance, tracing, isolation, and quarantine. These efforts were supported by health protocols including face coverings, social distancing, and compliance monitoring. As a result, activities were sustained from August 1 to December 8, 2020. There were 62,970 COVID-19 tests conducted with 1435 people testing positive for a positivity rate of 2.28%. A total of 1670 COVID-19 cases were identified with 235 self-reports. The mean number of tests per week was 3500 with approximately 80 of these positive (11/d). More than 60 student tracers were trained with over 120 personnel available to contact trace, at a ratio of 1 per 400 university members. The successes and lessons learned provide a framework and pathway for similar institutions to mitigate the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 and sustain operations during a global pandemic.

Objective:
The seroprevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) IgG antibody was evaluated among employees of a Veterans Affairs healthcare system to assess potential risk factors for transmission and infection.
Methods:All employees were invited to participate in a questionnaire and serological survey to detect antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 as part of a facility-wide quality improvement and infection prevention initiative regardless of clinical or nonclinical duties. The initiative was conducted from June 8 to July 8, 2020.
Results:Of the 2,900 employees, 51% participated in the study, revealing a positive SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence of 4.9% (72 of 1,476; 95% CI, 3.8%–6.1%). There were no statistically significant differences in the presence of antibody based on gender, age, frontline worker status, job title, performance of aerosol-generating procedures, or exposure to known patients with coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19) within the hospital. Employees who reported exposure to a known COVID-19 case outside work had a significantly higher seroprevalence at 14.8% (23 of 155) compared to those who did not 3.7% (48 of 1,296; OR, 4.53; 95% CI, 2.67–7.68; P < .0001). Notably, 29% of seropositive employees reported no history of symptoms for SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Conclusions:The seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 among employees was not significantly different among those who provided direct patient care and those who did not, suggesting that facility-wide infection control measures were effective. Employees who reported direct personal contact with COVID-19–positive persons outside work were more likely to have SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Employee exposure to SARS-CoV-2 outside work may introduce infection into hospitals.

Summary
Introduction
The spectrum between 30 and 300 GHz is referred to as the millimeter wave (mmWave) band because the wavelengths for these frequencies are in the range from about one to ten millimeters. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has allocated the 57–64 GHz mmWave band for general unlicensed use, opening the door to supporting high data rate wireless applications over the 7 GHz unlicensed band. Given the spectrum deficiency and network densification of cellular systems, how to use the mmWave band to support various machine/human-to-machine/human communications is critically important for fifth generation (5G) cellular systems.
Millimeter wave can be applied to both outdoor and indoor wireless communications. mmWave together with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a promising candidate for 5G outdoor transmission, as discussed in Chapter 15. For indoor uses, mmWave communication has many salient features, listed below, and it is highly desirable for 5G femtocell communications. This chapter focuses on the indoor femtocell scenario.
First, mmWave can achieve very high data rates (up to multi-Gbps), so it can enable many killer applications such as high-definition and interactive streaming services, and the Internet of Things. These applications require not only a high data rate but also stringent quality-of-service (QoS) requirements in terms of delay, jitter, and loss. Second, mmWave can coexist well with other wireless communication systems, such as the existing cellular systems, Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11), and ultra-wideband (UWB) systems, because of the large frequency difference. Third, oxygen absorption has its peak at 60 GHz, so the transmission and interference ranges of mmWave communication are small, which allows very dense deployment of mmWave-based femtocells. In addition, the fact that the mmWave signal degrades significantly when passing through walls and over distance is helpful for ensuring security of the content.
The special channel characteristics and features of mmWave communication pose new challenges regarding how to coordinate mmWave transmissions to achieve high spatial reuse and guarantee the QoS. In the following, given the unique characteristics of mmWave communications and of the appropriate multiplexing technologies and network architectures for mmWave-based femtocells, we discuss the key opportunities and challenges in resource management of mmWave-based wireless networks, and introduce an appropriate scheduling solution to explore the spatial multiplexing gain in mmWave networks.

Background
There are concerns regarding the validity of combat exposure reports of veterans seeking treatment for combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within US Veterans Affairs Medical Centers.
AimsTo verify combat exposure history for a relevant sample through objective historical data.
MethodArchival records were reviewed from the US National Military Personnel Records Center for 100 consecutive veterans reporting Vietnam combat in a Veterans Affairs PTSD clinic. Cross-sectional clinical assessment and 12-month service use data were also examined.
ResultsAlthough 93% had documentation of Vietnam war-zone service, only 41% of the total sample had objective evidence of combat exposure documented in their military record. There was virtually no difference between the Vietnam ‘combat’ and ‘no combat’ groups on relevant clinical variables.
ConclusionsA significant number of treatment-seeking Veterans Affairs patients may misrepresent their combat involvement in Vietnam. There are implications for the integrity of the PTSD database and the Veterans Affairs healthcare system.

At the Savannah River Site (SRS) we are currently finalizing the design for a multi-system vitrification process that will be installed in the F-Canyon Multi-Purpose Process Facility (MPPF), an existing highly shielded, remotely operated facility. Authorization to proceed beyond the preliminary design based on the recommendation of a Formal Design Review Board was requested in May of 1999.
The Savannah River Technology Center (SRTC) Process Development Group has been conducting research and developing a process to identify equipment design bases and process operating parameters since 1996. The goal of the project is to stabilize a tank of ∼11,000 liters of nitric acid solution containing valuable isotopes of americium (Am) and curium (Cm). Vitrification has been selected as the most attractive alternative for stabilization and provides the opportunity for recovery and eventual reuse of the actinides. The final glass form will be placed in interim storage awaiting a disposition by the Department of Energy. This paper presents a brief history of the stabilization program and an overview of the entire Am/Cm stabilization process. This paper also provides details of a specific processing issue related to drain tube pluggage (devitrification) that was encountered during the development of the baseline batch vitrification process, and the remedy employed to reduce the potential for further drain tube pluggage.

Thin films of the Bi-2212 and T1–2212 compounds were prepared by MOCVD deposition techniques. Resistivity versus temperature and critical current density measurements were used to characterize the electrical properties. An analysis of the data based on a proposed model determined the influence of intragranular weak links. Thin film samples in both systems with near optimum oxygen doping showed a correlation between the slope and magnitude of the resistivity in the normal state. Samples with reduced oxygen content displayed a strong increase in the intragrain boundary resistance, consistent with weak link defects. The results agree with a similar analysis of YBCO samples and support a common mechanism for the development of weak links in cuprates.

Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 thin films have been prepared in situ by low pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition using fluorinated β–diketonate precursors. The influence of the growth conditions on the oxide phase stability and impurity phase formation was examined as well as the superconducting properties of the films. Thin films deposited on LaAIO3 substrates were epitaxial as confirmed by x-ray diffraction measurements, including θ-2θ and φ scans. Four probe resistivity measurements showed the films to be superconducting with a maximum Tc0 of 90 K without post annealing. This Tc0 is among the highest reported for thin films of the BSCCO (2212) phase, and approaches reported bulk values.
