Preliminary feeding experiments (Morris, Ferguson & Raymont, 1973) showed that Neomysis integer was capable of incorporating dietary labelled [1-14C]fatty acids (16:04 18:1,18:2,18:3) into its lipid. Radioactivity was observed in all the major fatty acids of Neomysis, including the polyunsaturated fatty acids. Neomysis could also convert dietary 14C-labelled starch into lipid, producing a range of fatty acids, including long-chain polyunsaturated acids, incorporated in both triglycerides and phospholipids. During these metabolic conversions, the mysid was observed to incorporate more radioactive14C into the phospholipid fraction with increase in the experimental feeding period.

Interest has developed recently in the biochemical composition of zooplankton, particularly in relation to seasonal changes. An earlier study (Raymont, Srinivasagam & Raymont, 1971b) on deep frozen Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, collected over approximately 5 weeks in December/January 1968/69 suggested that protein was the main constituent and lipid much more variable. Despite the variability the mean lipid content during January was distinctly higher than in the previous month, thus supporting the findings of Kryuchkova & Makarov (1969) that lipid content of krill tends to increase as the summer advances. However, collections of material from the Antarctic have tended to be limited both in location and season while methods of preservation have varied. It seemed desirable to follow changes in the biochemical composition of krill collected from a somewhat wider area and over a longer period. Moreover, the more extensive material gave opportunity for a more detailed examination of specific fractions, such as the amino acids of Euphausia superba. Preliminary investigations (Srinivasagam, Raymont, Moodie & Raymont, 1971) on the amino acid composition of protein hydrolysates showed good agreement with the results of some other authors. However, the findings of Burkholder, Mandelli & Centeno (1967) and especially of Moiseev (1970) showed certain differences.

Piglets in litters, paired according to farrowing date, were redistributed during the first day after birth according to two schemes. In scheme AC–BD, one sow of the pair received the heaviest and the third heaviest quarters of the combined litters (based on weight post partum), while the other sow received the second heaviest and the lightest quarters. In scheme AB–CD, one sow received the heavier half, and the other the lighter half of the piglets. After 3 weeks under scheme AB–CD, the weight difference between the second and third quarters had become reversed, while under scheme AC–BD the difference was preserved. There was no evidence of a corresponding interaction in the selection of anterior or posterior teats. The rank correlation of the piglets' initial weight and suckling position was low for most sows. No marked differences were observed between fostered and unfostered piglets in the weight measures or suckling position. It is concluded that the growth of the piglets was influenced by the relative size of their litter-mates after redistribution, but that little of the effect could be explained by competition for the anterior teats.

Schottky-barrier photovoltaic devices are fabricated by selective metal deposition on p-GaN. A 1.25 V open-circuit voltage is observed for the best device. Devices were optimized by annealing in forming gas at temperatures ranging from 550°C to 700°C. Annealing time and forming gas flow rate are used to control the metal-semiconductor Schottky barrier formation. Optimum fabrication parameters are achieved based on photovoltaic response from the devices under UV illumination. Barrier heights (0.47 eV - 0.49 eV) were used as basis to compare the device response. The Schottky-barrier height is very sensitive to processing conditions, for example a 2.5% increase in barrier height is observed when Schottky contact annealing temperature is changed from 600 °C to 650 °C. Under UV illumination, the open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current increase with increasing annealing temperature while the series resistance decreases under such conditions.

The development of a new species, Bacillidium vesiculoformis n. sp. (Microspora, Mrazekiidae), is described from the freshwater oligochaete Nais simplex (Oligochaeta, Naididae). Initial stages of parasite development consist of a monokaryotic merogony within a haemocyte of the intestinal blood sinus. The resulting hypertrophied haemocyte is attached to the chloragocytes of the sinus by fine cytoplasmic extensions with the sinus around the cell becoming greatly enlarged. The meronts within the haemocyte form diplokaryotic sporonts that undergo sporogenesis directly within the cytoplasm of the host cell. The infected cell becomes packed with spores and developmental stages, causing it dramatically to increase in size, eventually rupturing the oligochaete and cell. Sporogony appears to be disporoblastic. Released spores were observed to have an adhesive quality. Transmission studies conducted with mature spores failed to transmit the parasite horizontally although vertical transmission was observed. Phylogenetic analysis of the parasite demonstrated that B. vesiculoformis clustered with microsporidian parasites of bryozoa and two other microsporidians, Janacekia debaiseuxi and an unidentified Bacillidium sp.

Background. We carried out a large randomized trial of a brief form of cognitive therapy, manual-assisted cognitive behaviour therapy (MACT) versus treatment as usual (TAU) for deliberate self-harm.
Method. Patients presenting with recurrent deliberate self-harm in five centres were randomized to either MACT or (TAU) and followed up over 1 year. MACT patients received a booklet based on cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) principles and were offered up to five plus two booster sessions of CBT from a therapist in the first 3 months of the study. Ratings of parasuicide risk, anxiety, depression, social functioning and global function, positive and negative thinking, and quality of life were measured at baseline and after 6 and 12 months.
Results. Four hundred and eighty patients were randomized. Sixty per cent of the MACT group had both the booklet and CBT sessions. There were seven suicides, five in the TAU group. The main outcome measure, the proportion of those repeating deliberate self-harm in the 12 months of the study, showed no significant difference between those treated with MACT (39%) and treatment as usual (46%) (OR 0·78, 95% CI 0·53 to 1·14, P=0·20).
Conclusion. Brief cognitive behaviour therapy is of limited efficacy in reducing self-harm repetition, but the findings taken in conjunctin with the economic evaluation (Byford et al. 2003) indicate superiority of MACT over TAU in terms of cost and effectiveness combined.

AlGaN p-i-n Photodiode Arrays for Solar-Blind Applications

This paper presents UV imaging results for a 256×256 AlGaN Focal Plane Array that uses a back-illuminated AlGaN heterostructure p-i-n photodiode array, with 30×30 μm2 unit cells, operating at zero bias voltage, with a narrow-band UV response between 310 and 325 nm. The 256×256 array was fabricated from a multilayer AlGaN film grown by MOCVD on a sapphire substrate. The UV response operability (>0.4×average) was 94.8%, and the UV response uniformity (σ/μ) was 16.8%. Data are also presented for back-illuminated AlGaN p-i-n photodiodes from other films with cutoff wavelengths ranging between 301 and 364 nm. Data for variable-area diagnostic arrays of p-i-n AlGaN photodiodes with a GaN absorber (cutoff=364 nm) show: (1) high external quantum efficiency (50% at V=0 and 62% at V=-9 V); (2) the dark current is proportional to junction area, not perimeter; (3) the forward and reverse currents are uniform (σ/μ=50% for forty 30×30 μm2 diodes at V=−40 V); (4) the reverse-bias dark current data versus temperature and bias voltage can be fit very well by a hopping conduction model; and (5) capacitance versus voltage data are consistent with nearly full depletion of the unintentionally-doped 0.4 μm thick GaN absorber layer and imply a donor concentration of 3-4×1016 cm−3.
The effect of temporary reductions in incubation temperature on growth characteristics and lipid utilisation in the chick embryo

The effect(s) of finite exposure(s) to 22.0 °C on embryo weight gain, 3rd tarsus length, transfer of lipid from the yolk and uptake of specific lipid components by the liver, were measured in the chick embryo. Embryo growth was completely suspended over the period of temperature reduction, but resumed unimpaired when the optimum temperature of 37.5 °C was restored. Two successive periods of embryonic exposure to 22.0 °C (36 h at d 3 followed by 24 at d 10) were additive in their effect on growth retardation. Embryos subjected to temperature reductions on d 3 of incubation displayed significant changes in lipid concentrations and polyunsaturated fatty acid profiles within the liver when measured at d 18 of incubation. Yolk lipid uptake was significantly reduced but not suspended by embryonic exposure to 22.0 °C. It is suggested that the observed suspension of embryonic development was the result of a temperature dependent reduction in metabolism according to a Q10∼2, which is typical of an ectothermic organism.

in situ Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (SE) is an optical technique which is well suited for the monitoring of epitaxial semiconductor growth, due to its high surface sensitivity and non-invasive nature. In this work, SE systems were installed on both MBE and MOCVD deposition systems to monitor the epitaxial growth of InxGa1−xAs and InxAl1−xAs compounds on InP substrates. The structures grown include thick lattice matched In0.53Ga0.47As buffer layers (for HBT collectors), and strained RTD structures. SE was used to monitor in real-time layer composition and thickness during growth. To enhance the precision and accuracy of the SE determined growth parameters, it was necessary to optimize the SE data analysis strategies. A methodology to determine the best spectral region for the SE data analysis in the presence of noise and systematic effects (such as angle of incidence uncertainty, detector wavelength shifts, surface roughness, uncertainty in surface temperature, non-ideal growth modes, etc.) is presented. Using the optimized data analysis strategies, long term SE-determined InxGa1−�As composition accuracy (as verified by ex situ x-ray measurements) of ±0.002 in ‘x’ was achieved. SE thickness measurements of ultra-thin (<30Å) strained AlAs barrier layers were also in excellent agreement (±0.5Å) with real-time photo-emission oscillation measurements.

Si1−x−y GexCy epitaxial films offer wider control of strain and bandgap. In such films the morphology is an important indication of the crystalline quality of the material. We report on the morphology of Si1−x−y GexCy epitaxial thin films deposited by Ultra High Vacuum Chemical Vapor Deposition at a temperature of 550° C and deposition pressures ranging from 1 to 10 mTorr. The precursors used were Si2H6, GeH4 and CH3SiH3. Germanium mole fractions ranging from 0% to 40% were studied with carbon concentrations varying from 2×1019 to 2×1021 atoms/cm3. AFM analysis of the surface indicates that the roughness is a function of both the carbon concentration and the film thickness. For high germanium concentrations with thickness beyond the critical thickness (of Si1−xGex), carbon is found to decrease the surface roughness of the film. Thus the surface morphology confirms the strain compensation provided by carbon which is also observed using XRD. For films below the critical thickness, as the carbon concentration is increased, three dimensional islanding is observed by RHEED and AFM, degrading the epitaxial quality of the material.

We report on the morphology of heavily phosphorous doped silicon films grown by ultra high vacuum chemical vapor deposition at temperatures of ∼550° C. The effects of PH3 on epitaxial films have been examined for silicon deposited using SiH4 and Si2H6. It is found that films grown using silane experience an increase in surface roughness with increasing phosphine partial pressure. AFM and RHEED studies indicate 3-D growth. As epitaxy progresses, it is believed that phosphorus segregation on the growing film surface greatly diminishes the adsorption and surface mobility of the silicon bearing species. Initial Si deposition results in a pitted surface, but as growth advances and the phosphorus coverage increases, growth within the pits decreases the surface roughness. In contrast to SiH4, it is found that Si2H6 provides excellent quality, smooth films even at high PH3 partial pressures.

We have developed several x-ray microtomography systems which function as quantitative three dimensional x-ray microscopes. In this paper we describe the evolutionary path followed from making the first high resolution experimental microscopes to later generations which can be routinely used for investigating materials. Developing the instrumentation for reliable quantitative x-ray microscopy using synchrotron and laboratory based x-ray sources has led to other imaging modalities for obtaining temporal and spatial two dimensional information.
