Interaction between Alcohol Consumption and Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) Genotype with Cognition in Middle-Aged Men

Objective:
Heavy alcohol consumption is associated with poorer cognitive function in older adults. Although understudied in middle-aged adults, the relationship between alcohol and cognition may also be influenced by genetics such as the apolipoprotein (ApoE) ε4 allele, a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. We examined the relationship between alcohol consumption, ApoE genotype, and cognition in middle-aged adults and hypothesized that light and/or moderate drinkers (≤2 drinks per day) would show better cognitive performance than heavy drinkers or non-drinkers. Additionally, we hypothesized that the association between alcohol use and cognitive function would differ by ApoE genotype (ε4+ vs. ε4−).
Method:Participants were 1266 men from the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging (VETSA; M age = 56; range 51–60) who completed a neuropsychological battery assessing seven cognitive abilities: general cognitive ability (GCA), episodic memory, processing speed, executive function, abstract reasoning, verbal fluency, and visuospatial ability. Alcohol consumption was categorized into five groups: never, former, light, moderate, and heavy.
Results:In fully adjusted models, there was no significant main effect of alcohol consumption on cognitive functions. However, there was a significant interaction between alcohol consumption and ApoE ε4 status for GCA and episodic memory, such that the relationship of alcohol consumption and cognition was stronger in ε4 carriers. The ε4+ heavy drinking subgroup had the poorest GCA and episodic memory.
Conclusions:Presence of the ε4 allele may increase vulnerability to the deleterious effects of heavy alcohol consumption. Beneficial effects of light or moderate alcohol consumption were not observed.

Anatomical studies determined the effect of 0.8, 1.7, and 3.4 kg/ha of penoxalin [N-(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitrobenzenamine]; AC-92390 (N-sec-butyl-3-4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitrobenzenamine); oryzalin (3,5-dinitro-N4,N4-dipropylsulfanilamide); and trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) on the cell structure of snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. ‘Tenderette’) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Corsoy’]. Cellular abnormalities in the swollen and brittle area of the stem of treated plants included thinnerwalled cells, elongated xylem elements, hypertrophy and hyperplasia of cells, and anomalous rings of vascular tissue in the cortical region. Injury caused by the four herbicides was similar in snap bean and soybean.
Static aeroelastic optimisation to wing structural weight estimation of an extremely manoeuvrable UAV

Estimating the wing structural weight of an extremely manoeuvrable Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) during conceptual design has proven to be a significant challenge due to its high load factor (the ratio of an aircraft lift to its weight). The traditional empirical method relies on existing statistical data of previously built aircraft, then is inadequate for the innovative UAV structure design which can endure extremely manoeuvrable load (load factor is greater than 9g). In this paper, the finite element model for wing structure of an extremely manoeuvrable UAV with foreplane was built, and the structural weight was estimated by static aeroelastic optimisation considering structural strength and buckling constraints. The methodology developed here is only consisted of three components, which is much less than that for existing method, thus the procedure developed here sacrificed some accuracy, but it’s faster and more suitable for aircraft conceptual design. It was validated by the overlap between the weights given by the methodology, and the results from empirical equations when the load factors are less than 9g. Through the analysis procedure developed, the wing structural weights of the extremely manoeuvrable UAV were given under different load cases (load factor changes from 5g to 12g).
African horse sickness in The Gambia: circulation of a live-attenuated vaccine-derived strain

African horse sickness virus serotype 9 (AHSV-9) has been known for some time to be circulating amongst equids in West Africa without causing any clinical disease in indigenous horse populations. Whether this is due to local breeds of horses being resistant to disease or whether the AHSV-9 strains circulating are avirulent is currently unknown. This study shows that the majority (96%) of horses and donkeys sampled across The Gambia were seropositive for AHS, despite most being unvaccinated and having no previous history of showing clinical signs of AHS. Most young horses (<3 years) were seropositive with neutralizing antibodies specific to AHSV-9. Eight young equids (<3 years) were positive for AHSV-9 by serotype-specific RT–PCR and live AHSV-9 was isolated from two of these horses. Sequence analysis revealed the presence of an AHSV-9 strain showing 100% identity to Seg-2 of the AHSV-9 reference strain, indicating that the virus circulating in The Gambia was highly likely to have been derived from a live-attenuated AHSV-9 vaccine strain.

Hybridization and backcrossing between transgenic oilseed rape and two related weed species under field conditions

Determining the frequency of crop-wild transgene flow under field conditions is a necessity for the development of regulatory strategies to manage transgenic hybrids. Gene flow of green fluorescent protein (GFP) and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) transgenes was quantified in three field experiments using eleven independent transformed Brassica napus L. lines and the wild relatives, B. rapa L. and Raphanus raphanistrum L. Under a high crop to wild relative ratio (600:1), hybridization frequency with B. rapa differed among the individual transformed B. napus lines (ranging from ca. 4% to 22%), however, this difference could be caused by the insertion events or other factors, e.g., differences in the hybridization frequencies among the B. rapa plants. The average hybridization frequency over all transformed lines was close to 10%. No hybridization with R. raphanistrum was detected. Under a lower crop to wild relative ratio (180:1), hybridization frequency with B. rapa was consistent among the transformed B. napus lines at ca. 2%. Interspecific hybridization was higher when B. rapa occurred within the B. napus plot (ca. 37.2%) compared with plot margins (ca. 5.2%). No significant differences were detected among marginal plants grown at 1, 2, and 3 m from the field plot. Transgene backcrossing frequency between B. rapa and transgenic hybrids was determined in two field experiments in which the wild relative to transgenic hybrid ratio was 5–15 plants of B. rapa to 1 transgenic hybrid. As expected, ca. 50% of the seeds produced were transgenic backcrosses when the transgenic hybrid plants served as the maternal parent. When B. rapa plants served as the maternal parent, transgene backcrossing frequencies were 0.088% and 0.060%. Results show that transgene flow from many independent transformed lines of B. napus to B. rapa can occur under a range of field conditions, and that transgenic hybrids have a high potential to produce transgenic seeds in backcrosses.

New techniques and procedures for measuring Poisson's ratio of MEMS materials are presented. Tensile specimens of polysilicon that are 3.5 μm thick are pulled in a small test machine that has a linear air bearing to eliminate friction. Biaxial strain is measured directly by laser-based interferometry from four gold lines deposited on the specimen surface. The value of Poisson's ratio for vapor-deposited polysilicon is 0.22 +/- 0.01 as determined from 19 tests..
