Since the initial publication of A Compendium of Strategies to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections in Acute Care Hospitals in 2008, the prevention of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) has continued to be a national priority. Progress in healthcare epidemiology, infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and implementation science research has led to improvements in our understanding of effective strategies for HAI prevention. Despite these advances, HAIs continue to affect ∼1 of every 31 hospitalized patients,1 leading to substantial morbidity, mortality, and excess healthcare expenditures,1 and persistent gaps remain between what is recommended and what is practiced.
The widespread impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on HAI outcomes2 in acute-care hospitals has further highlighted the essential role of infection prevention programs and the critical importance of prioritizing efforts that can be sustained even in the face of resource requirements from COVID-19 and future infectious diseases crises.3
The Compendium: 2022 Updates document provides acute-care hospitals with up-to-date, practical expert guidance to assist in prioritizing and implementing HAI prevention efforts. It is the product of a highly collaborative effort led by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA), the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), the American Hospital Association (AHA), and The Joint Commission, with major contributions from representatives of organizations and societies with content expertise, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society (PIDS), the Society for Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), the Society for Hospital Medicine (SHM), the Surgical Infection Society (SIS), and others.

Rapid germination and root growth have been identified as important plant characteristics for establishment in arid environments. This study evaluates germination, radicle elongation, and root growth rates of two annual grasses, two forage species, and yellow starthistle. Yellow starthistle germination, radicle elongation, and root growth were faster than those of medusahead and hedgehog dogtailgrass. Subterranean clover possessed rapid seedling growth characteristics similar to those of yellow starthistle, whereas Palestine orchardgrass was most delayed.

Hoary cress germination decreased with lower osmotic potential. Knapweed germination was greatest at 0.0 and −0.5 MPa of osmotic potential. Salinity increases up to an electrical conductivity (EC) of 12 dS m-1 had no effect on germination of either species. Hoary cress and knapweed root growth were reduced by decreases in osmotic potential. Hoary cress root growth was not affected by increasing salinity up to an EC of 12 dS m-1. Knapweed root growth was reduced by the initial increase in salinity (4 dS m-1), but not by higher salt concentrations.

A 2-yr study was conducted to evaluate the response of yellow starthistle density and grass biomass to combinations of newly seeded grass, picloram, and fertilizer. A combination of ‘Tualatin’ tall oatgrass or ‘Paiute’ orchardgrass with 0.14 or 0.28 kg ae/ha of picloram effectively controlled yellow starthistle and improved forage production. Grass seeded alone or combined with fertilizer neither controlled yellow starthistle nor improved forage production. Three-way combinations of grass, picloram, and fertilizer did not affect yellow starthistle density in either year but resulted in more ‘Tualatin’ tall oatgrass biomass in 1987.

Growth and growth rate characteristics of diffuse knapweed and bluebunch wheatgrass seedlings were evaluated under two temperature regimes, 10 and 16 C, and two moisture regimes, − 0.01 and − 0.03 MPa, in an environmental chamber. Intra- and interspecific interference were evaluated at 10 C and at either − 0.01 or − 0.03 MPa. Root–leaf ratios for bluebunch wheatgrass were greater than for diffuse knapweed at − 0.01 MPa. Under moist conditions, root penetration was greater for diffuse knapweed than for bluebunch wheatgrass roots; penetration was equal in warm or dry conditions. Wheatgrass root length was greater than knapweed length under dry conditions. Intraspecific interference was greater than interspecific interference for both species. Leaf area data and root–leaf ratios suggest that diffuse knapweed is the faster-growing species under moist conditions.

Russian knapweed and perennial pepperweed are invasive to meadow and riparian habitats in the semiarid intermountain west. Seed germination was tested to determine favored seedbed characteristics. Germination was inhibited in both species when water stress was imposed using polyethylene glycol. Knapweed achieved 60% germination after 40 d in dark and alternating light/dark environments. Pepperweed germination was greatest (30% after 14 d) in light and alternating light/ dark environments. Both species showed that germination declines when exposed to salt stress but continued to germinate under salt stress as high as 16 dSm−1.

This study identified the factors that influenced whether farmers in the Southeastern United States perceived an improvement in environmental quality from adopting precision farming technologies (PFTs). Farmers with larger farms or higher yields were more likely to believe that they observed positive externalities associated with PFTs. Farmers who found PFTs profitable or who believed input reduction was important had higher probabilities whereas those with higher incomes or who were more dependent on farm income were less likely to perceive such benefits. Interestingly, the importance of environmental quality and length of time using PFTs were not found to affect the probability of perceiving an improvement in environmental quality.

The formation of an amorphous layer is needed to prevent channeling effect of B in the subsequent implant and hence, shallower as-implanted and annealed profiles could be expected. B diffusion in the pre-amorphization (PAI) Si has been studied extensively by many research groups and the diffusion has been explained by the interaction of B and defects generated by the PAI and B implant processes. In our previous study, we found that B diffusion can also be affected by the immobile B clustering caused by the incorporated species and therefore, B diffusion in the PAI Si should be expected to be different with different PAI species due to their different effect on the B clustering. In this paper, we reported different B diffusion behavior in bulk Si with respective to different PAI species. The species include GeF2, Ge, F, BF2, and In and the immobile B clustering plays an important role in the B diffusion reduction.

Evaluation of physically thicker gate insulator materials with significantly higher dielectric constants (k = 10 – 25) as potential replacements for silicon dioxide, SiO2 (k = 3.9), and silicon oxynitride continues to be a focus of the semiconductor industry. The challenge is to provide a film with lower leakage current and with capacitance equivalent to < 1.0 nm SiO2 [1–4]. One such candidate material; metal-organic chemical vapor deposited (MOCVD) hafnium silicate, has been physically characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) in plan view, as a blanket, uncapped film and high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) in cross section following integration into capacitors and complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) transistors. Changes in the material microstructure associated with phase segregation and crystallization as a function of Hf silicate composition and rapid thermal anneal (RTA) temperature have been observed and a discussion of the segregation mechanisms is presented [5–8]. Also, various methods of incorporating nitrogen into bulk hafnium silicate films have been investigated and resultant transistor electrical performance data has been correlated with physical characterization for NH3 post deposition anneal (PDA) treatments at various temperatures.

Flux Dependence of Amorphous Layer Formation and Damage Annealing in Room Temperature Implantation of Boron into Silicon

We implanted <100> silicon 200mm wafers with 20keV 11B+ to a fluence of 5×1015 atoms/ cm2 using beam currents from 1-7mA, which produced flux of about 50-350µA/cm2. The implant temperature of all wafers rose no more than five degrees above room temperature, regardless of flux. Cross sectional TEM images (as-implanted) of the highest flux samples revealed a continuous amorphous layer from the implanted surface to a depth of about 530Å. The high flux and <30°C implantation temperature allowed amorphous layer formation even with this moderate boron fluence, as was suggested by Jones, et.al.1. We observed a strong dependence of as-implanted damage on boron flux, as previously reported by Eisen and Welch2. After 900°C, 20 sec RTA, the highest flux samples had 50% lower sheet resistance than the lowest flux samples, due to better activation, as observed in SRP. When a 1050°C, 15 sec RTA was employed, this sheet resistance and activation dependence on flux disappeared. Cross sectional TEM images revealed that the size and number of the Type II end of range defects , which were centered near the amorphous and crystalline as-implanted interface, in the highest flux samples were smaller than the Type 1 dislocation loops centered about the peak disorder in the lowest flux samples after RTA. SIMS and SRP profiles indicated that transient enhanced diffusion during the 900°C, 20 sec RTA may have been reduced in the highest flux samples. Based on these observations and on previous reports, we conclude that sufficiently high flux during room temperature boron implantation will produce a continuous amorphous layer with doses that are appropriate for p-type source/drain formation. The amorphous layer will produce improved activation and damage annealing behavior in subsequent RTA, particularly as the RTA temperature is reduced.
