16 Learning-Related Challenges and their Association with Special Education Receipt and Vocational Outcomes in Autistic Adults

Objective:
Relative to their typically developing peers, autistic individuals experience greater difficulties in domains of functioning that are relevant to learning and adult outcomes, such as sensory sensitivities, anxiety, and social. However, little is known about how difficulties in these domains relate to the receipt of special education services as well as adult outcomes, such as vocational achievement. The current study sought to fill this gap by examining if difficulties in various learning-related domains as ascertained via the Learning Needs Screening Tool (LNST) were associated with historical special education receipt and vocational status.
Participants and Methods:400 autistic adults, recruited via the Simons Powering Autism Research (SPARK) participant registry Research Match service, participated in this study (40.5% male, mean age=28.9 years). All participants completed the LNST, which collects responses to 13 core questions about learning (such as challenges with memorization, note taking, spelling and identifying arithmetic signs), as well as 7 additional questions with checkbox and free response options, and yields a total score from 0-30. LNST item 14 and its response options (1-9) capture suspected causes of learning difficulties (e.g., 'too much noise or activity bothers me,' 'I get nervous taking tests'). These individual questions as well as the total of endorsed learning related challenges were then evaluated in relation to historical special education receipt (“yes” vs. “no”) and vocational outcomes (“yes” vs. “no” engaging in 10+ hours of postsecondary education or employment without supports), as assessed via the Taylor Vocational Index.
Results:Logistic regression was utilized to predict the dependent variables of interest. Models included sex assigned at birth and age in the first step as covariates. Then either the total of learning related challenges endorsed or the 9 individual learning-related challenges from the LNST were included as independent variables of interest. For historical special education receipt, two items - “It’s hard for me to work by myself” (B = .78, p<.05) and “I get nervous taking tests” (B = .49, p<.05) were positively associated with a history of special education services. For vocational outcomes, the total learning related challenges (B = -.25, p<.001) as well as endorsement of one item -“It’s hard for me to work by myself” (B = -.88, p=<.05) were associated with poorer vocational outcomes.
Conclusions:These findings shed light on the possible learning-related challenges that are experienced by autistic adults. Further examination of the role these learning related challenges play in the receipt of special education and on vocational outcomes is warranted. In particular, difficulties with independence in work was related to both special education receipt and poorer vocational outcomes, indicating that it may be a fruitful area of focus for vocational training programs.

Summary
Introduction
In recent years, forms of public science communication that overtly intersect personal and professional identity have become more commonplace. This intersection represents a rich opportunity to connect science to audiences who have been historically excluded and to experiment with different forms of expression. Of course, efforts to do or share science in cultural contexts that break free of a white, heteronormative, and patriarchal establishment are prone to criticism from those who prefer to propagate these traditions. Of these critiques, perhaps the most perplexing and anachronistic are those that position personal or political narratives at odds with the requirement for ‘objectivity’ in science (Saini, 2020). While objectivity is paramount to the design of reproducible scientific experiments and unbiased interpretation of results, we must recognize that scientists are people shaped by their life experiences. Good research should not require scientists to leave their identity at the laboratory door. This is especially important for people whose identities are not well represented in lab culture.
Mainstream international efforts to include underrepresented people in science first centred on gender equality with the United Nations declaring the first International Day of Women and Girls in STEM in 2015 (United Nations, n.d.). There is much important work to be done to include women in science, but some of these more widely adopted diversity initiatives can leave ‘other aspects of identity side-lined’ (Moore and Nash, 2021, p 4), can perpetuate the myth of a gender binary, and can ultimately be exclusive. Visibility for other groups of people who have been historically excluded from science is growing, however, and has, in some cases, been assisted by campaigns starting on social media that coincide with broader acknowledgements of these communities.
In common with other minority groups, LGBTIQA+ people and concerns are underrepresented in science and science communication research and practice (Roberson and Orthia, 2021). In recent years, there has been a growth in organizations and networks that support queer-identified people working in STEM and international days of celebration or ‘observance’. The inaugural international ‘LGBTQ+ STEM Day’ was held in July 2018 but is now formally ensconced as an annual event on 18 November, a date symbolic of the anniversary of the US Supreme Court fight against workplace discrimination by gay activist and astronomer, Frank Kameny (Stenhoff, 2020).

Colorado has consistently had one of the highest rates of suicide in the United States, and El Paso County has the highest number of suicide and firearm-related suicide deaths within the state. Community-based solutions like those of the Suicide Prevention Collaborative of El Paso County may be more effective in preventing suicide as they are specific to local issues, sensitive to local culture, and informed by local data, community members, and stakeholders.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Over 30% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) exhibit fibromyalgianess, a symptom cluster associated with increased pain sensitivity. Up to half of RA patients use oral glucocorticoids (GCs) long-term despite their known, dose-dependent toxicity. We examined the association between fibromyalgianess and oral GC persistence in RA patients. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: We used data from the Central Pain in Rheumatoid Arthritis (CPIRA) cohort to follow participants with active RA on oral prednisone who initiated a new disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug. We measured fibromyalgianess using the Fibromyalgia Survey Questionnaire (FSQ), previously shown to correlate with key fibromyalgia features often superimposed upon RA. We stratified fibromyalgianess severity as follows: FSQ<8 low, 8-10 moderate, >10 high/very high. We defined GC persistence as GC use at 3 month followup visit. We assessed the association between baseline fibromyalgianess (exposure) and GC persistence at followup (outcome) using multiple logistic regression, adjusted for demographics, RA duration, serostatus, and inflammatory activity measured by swollen joint count and C reactive protein. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Of 97 participants on prednisone at baseline, 65% were taking prednisone at follow-up. Fifty-seven percent of participants with low baseline fibromyalgianess had persistent GC use, compared to 84% with high or very high fibromyalgianess. After adjustment as outlined above, participants with high/very high baseline fibromyalgianess remained more likely to be on prednisone at follow-up, relative to those with low fibromyalgianess (OR 4.99 [95% CI 1.20 – 20.73]). DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: In this cohort of patients with active RA, high fibromyalgianess is associated with persistent GC use, independent of inflammatory activity. This finding suggests non-inflammatory pain related to fibromyalgianess may be misclassified as inflammatory pain related to RA disease activity.

Transient energy supply remains one of the key challenges limiting the development of transient implantable medical devices for monitoring, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases within a predetermined time frame. A key feature of such devices is their controllable degradation during service life. An on-board transient energy supply with predictable performance over time is required to drive transient electronics. In this article, we present recent advances in the development of materials for biodegradable energy-storage devices (batteries and supercapacitors) and biodegradable energy-harvesting systems (enzymatic biofuel cells and triboelectric nanogenerators). Future perspectives, challenges, and opportunities related to energy materials for transient power sources will also be summarized.
Phonemic and Semantic Verbal Fluency in Sex Chromosome Aneuploidy: Contrasting the Effects of Supernumerary X versus Y Chromosomes on Performance

Objectives: Past research suggests that youth with sex chromosome aneuploidies (SCAs) present with verbal fluency deficits. However, most studies have focused on sex chromosome trisomies. Far less is known about sex chromosome tetrasomies and pentasomies. Thus, the current research sought to characterize verbal fluency performance among youth with sex chromosome trisomies, tetrasomies, and pentasomies by contrasting how performance varies as a function of extra X number and X versus Y status. Methods: Participants included 79 youth with SCAs and 42 typically developing controls matched on age, maternal education, and racial/ethnic background. Participants completed the phonemic and semantic conditions of a verbal fluency task and an abbreviated intelligence test. Results: Both supernumerary X and Y chromosomes were associated with verbal fluency deficits relative to controls. These impairments increased as a function of the number of extra X chromosomes, and the pattern of impairments on phonemic and semantic fluency differed for those with a supernumerary X versus Y chromosome. Whereas one supernumerary Y chromosome was associated with similar performance across fluency conditions, one supernumerary X chromosome was associated with relatively stronger semantic than phonemic fluency skills. Conclusions: Verbal fluency skills in youth with supernumerary X and Y chromosomes are impaired relative to controls. However, the degree of impairment varies across groups and task condition. Further research into the cognitive underpinnings of verbal fluency in youth with SCAs may provide insights into their verbal fluency deficits and help guide future treatments. Limbic white matter pathways link emotion, cognition, and behavior and are potentially malleable to the influences of traumatic events throughout development. However, the impact of interactions between childhood and later life trauma on limbic white matter pathways has yet to be examined. Here, we examined whether childhood maltreatment moderated the effect of combat exposure on diffusion tensor imaging measures within a sample of military veterans (N = 28). We examined five limbic tracts of interest: two components of the cingulum (cingulum, cingulate gyrus, and cingulum hippocampus [CGH]), the uncinate fasciculus, the fornix/stria terminalis, and the anterior limb of the internal capsule. Using effect sizes, clinically meaningful moderator effects were found only within the CGH. Greater combat exposure was associated with decreased CGH fractional anisotropy (overall structural integrity) and increased CGH radial diffusivity (perpendicular water diffusivity) among individuals with more severe childhood maltreatment. Our findings provide preliminary evidence of the moderating effect of childhood maltreatment on the relationship between combat exposure and CGH structural integrity. These differences in CGH structural integrity could have maladaptive implications for emotion and memory, as well as provide a potential mechanism by which childhood maltreatment induces vulnerability to later life trauma exposure.

Summary
Abstract
As you get started on your project to create a serious game for learning, it is important for you to recognize that you and your team will likely need the skills of several different disciplines to achieve success. Usually, this means that you will be working with colleagues who have been trained in a different field from yours. By better understanding what the key concerns and methods of their disciplines are, you will better understand where your teammates are coming from and the processes they are used to. We introduce the standard methods used in the supporting fields of instructional system design, software development, game design, assessment development, and story creation and discuss some of the main strengths of each area as well as some of the typical challenges that practitioners in each area face.

Executive Function in Young Males with Klinefelter (XXY) Syndrome with and without Comorbid Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Deficits in executive function (EF) are reported to occur in individuals with Klinefelter syndrome (XXY). The degree of impairment, if any, is variable and the nature of these deficits has not been clearly elucidated in young males. In this report, we (a) examine EF skills using multiple tasks in a non-clinic referred group of youth with XXY, (b) describe the extent of EF weaknesses in XXY when this group is compared with typical males of a similar SES or typical males with similar verbal abilities, and (c) evaluate the contribution of comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to EF skills. The sample included 27 males with XXY (ages 9–25), 27 typically developing age- and vocabulary-matched males, and 22 age- and socioeconomic status-matched males. EF tasks included Verbal Fluency, the Trail Making Test, and the CANTAB Spatial Working Memory and Stockings of Cambridge tasks. Mixed model analysis of variance was used to compare the groups on EF tasks and revealed a main effect of group but no group by task interaction. Overall, the XXY group performed less well than both control groups, but performance did not differ significantly as a function of task. ADHD comorbidity in males with XXY was related to poorer EF skills. (JINS, 2011, 17, 522–530)

First-Principles and Quantum Transport Studies of Metal-Graphene End Contacts

Metal-graphene contact is of critical significance in graphene-based nanoelectronics. There are two possible metal-graphene contact geometries: side-contact and end-contact. In this paper, we apply first-principles calculations to study metal-graphene end-contact for these three commonly used electrode metals (Ni, Pd and Ti) and find that they have distinctive stable end-contact geometries with graphene. Transport properties of these metal-graphene-metal (M-G-M) end-contact structures are investigated by density functional theory non-equilibrium Green’s function (DFT-NEGF) algorithm. The Transmission as a function of chemical potential (E-EF) shows asymmetric curves relative to the Fermi level. Transmission curves of Ni-G-Ni and Ti-G-Ti contact structures indicate that bulk graphene sheet is n-doped by Ni and Ti electrodes, but that of Pd-G-Pd shows p-doping of graphene by Pd electrode. The contact behaviors of these electrodes are consistent with experimental observations.

The fast ignitor concept for inertial confinement fusion relies on the generation of hot electrons, produced by a short-pulse ultrahigh intensity laser, which propagate through high-density plasma to deposit their energy in the compressed fuel core and heat it to ignition. In preliminary experiments designed to investigate deep heating of high-density matter, we used a 20 joule, 0.5–30 ps laser to heat solid targets, and used emission spectroscopy to measure plasma temperatures and densities achieved at large depths (2–20 microns) away from the initial target surface. The targets consisted of an Al tracer layer buried within a massive CH slab; H-like and He-like line emission was then used to diagnose plasma conditions. We observe spectra from tracer layers buried up to 20 microns deep, measure emission durations of up to 200 ps, measure plasma temperatures up to Te=650 eV, and measure electron densities above 1023 cm−3. Analysis is in progress, but the data are in reasonable agreement with heating simulations when space-charge induced inhibition is included in hot-electron transport, and this supports the conclusion that the deep heating is initiated by hot electrons.

We investigated the HfO2:GaAs interface electronic structure and interface passivation by first principles calculations. The HfO2:GaAs interface of HfO2 terminated with four O atoms and GaAs terminated two Ga atoms is found to be the most energetically favorable. It is found that the interface states mainly arise from the interfacial charge mismatch, more specifically from the electron loss of interfacial As. Si or Ge as an interfacial passivating layer helps to maintain the charge of interfacial As and hence reduce the interface states.
