Editor’s note
In this updated chapter our two New Zealand authors, Lesley Robinson and Sue Vaealiki, again highlight ethics as an essential guide that provides tools for teaching and learning about environmental, educational, social and cultural issues and topics. They identify the ethics of care, listening, participation and hope as central to ECEfS and justify why this is so. They propose a set of early childhood pedagogies that have resonance with ECEfS. These are interdisciplinary learning, co-constructing ‘working theories’ for living sustainably, building respectful relationships and participating in communities of action. It is the authors’ belief that (re)consideration of the ethical and pedagogical foundations of early childhood education to ensure that sustainability issues and topics are addressed requires new professional journeys for early childhood educators and their communities. These journeys offer challenges and great rewards for those who believe that children – in collaboration with their families and communities – can be rich and competent citizens of the present who already have capacities and capabilities to influence the future.
Introduction
While setting off on a journey is often exciting, it may also be full of challenges. The journey of implementing an ECEfS curriculum is often more challenging and complex than one ever imagines. We hope that this revised chapter will assist you to reflect on some of the underpinning ethical principles that not only will act to anchor your journey but will also provide direction and inspiration. These principles are care, listening, participation and hope. We also discuss four transformative pedagogical approaches: interdisciplinary learning, co-constructing ‘working theories’ for living sustainably, building respectful relationships and participating in communities of action.

Background:
The purpose of this study was to describe the longitudinal trajectories and bidirectional relationships of the physical-social and emotional functioning (EF) dimensions of positive aging and to identify their baseline characteristics.
Methods:Women age 65 and older who enrolled in one or more Women's Health Initiative clinical trials (WHI CTs) and who had positive aging indicators measured at baseline and years 1, 3, 6, and 9 were included in these analyses (N = 2281). Analytic strategies included latent class growth modeling to identify longitudinal trajectories and multinomial logistic regression to examine the effects of baseline predictors on these trajectories.
Results:A five-trajectory model was chosen to best represent the data. For Physical-Social Functioning (PSF), trajectory groups included Low Maintainer (8.3%), Mid-Low Improver (10.4%), Medium Decliner (10.7%), Mid-High Maintainer (31.2%), and High Maintainer (39.4%); for EF, trajectories included Low Maintainer (3%), Mid-Low Improver (9%), Medium Decliner (7.7%), Mid-High Maintainer (22.8%), and High Maintainer (57.5%). Cross-classification of the groups of trajectories demonstrated that the impact of a high and stable EF on PSF might be greater than the reverse. Low depression symptoms, low pain, and high social support were the most consistent predictors of high EF trajectories.
Conclusion:Aging women are heterogeneous in terms of positive aging indicators for up to 9 years of follow-up. Interventions aimed at promoting sustainable EF might have diffused effects on other domains of healthy aging.

Summary
Most literary histories are written in lockstep with national stories. It is perfectly clear what such co-ordination brings to nationalism: it makes that national story deeper and longer, more rooted in its territory. It is less clear that literary history benefits. For a start many of the books herded into such national literary histories were written long before these nations ever existed: to read, say, the writings of Christopher Columbus as part of US literature is to misplace the historical and geographical co-ordinates necessary to understand Columbus. But even within the modern era, dominated by nation-states, literature itself has rarely been disciplined by national borders. Other ways of organising can tell different stories, which can perhaps persuade us to look in different ways at the multiplicity of texts available for the writing of literary history.
In this regard the American continent offers some fine complexities, from indigenous cultures which pre-date the European invasion, through the ever-shifting pattern of colonial settlements and struggles for independence, to the present mosaic of nation-states and notional supra-national designations such as ‘Latin America’, ‘Anglo-America’, and ‘the Caribbean’, not to mention the constant patterns of migration which have created categories like Cuban-American and Nuyorican, with writers who might belong to two or three national territories—or perhaps to none at all.
In recent years new formulations have suggested some different configurations: the idea of the Black Atlantic has emphasised connections across that ocean, particularly between Africa and America; various new versions of ‘southern’ literature have rediscovered connections between the southern US states and the islands of the Caribbean; and the Caribbean itself has expanded to include the coastal regions of Colombia and Venezuela. One major difference between these new formulations and the older national literary histories is that whereas previously writers might be struggled over—is T. S. Eliot a US or an English poet? is Paule Marshall a West Indian or a US novelist?—the new configurations are not mutually exclusive: each optic can in theory reveal a different set of relationships and trajectories. Taken together they help produce a richer literary history.

‘American Tropics’ refers to a kind of extended Caribbean, an area that includes the southern USA, the Atlantic littoral of Central America, the Caribbean islands, and northern South America. European colonial powers fought intensively here against indigenous populations and against each other for control of land and resources. The regions in the American Tropics share a history in which the dominant fact is the arrival of millions of white Europeans and black Africans; share an environment that is tropical or sub-tropical; and share a socio-economic model (the plantation), whose effects lasted at least well into the twentieth century. The imaginative space of the American Tropics therefore offers a differently centred literary history from those conventionally produced as US, Caribbean, or Latin American literature.This important collection brings together essays by distinguished scholars, including the late Neil Whitehead, Richard Price, Sally Price, and Susan Gillman, that engage with the idea of a literary geography of the American Tropics and that represent the rich diversity of the writing produced within this geographical area.

Commercialized hunting and trade of wildlife are the largest threats to mammal populations and human livelihoods in the Congo Basin. It is widely recognized that the lives of humans and wildlife in this region are inextricably intertwined. However, few studies have attempted to integrate both human and wildlife dimensions using ethnographic data to better contextualize the trade and its ecological impacts. This paper outlines a methodological approach that combines ethnographic research, ecological line transects and market surveys in the Dzanga Sangha Reserve (Central African Republic). Results from each research component are reported separately in order to provide examples of how each would answer specific questions about the status of wildlife populations and the scale of hunting within a protected area. The integrated analysis of ethnographic, market and ecological datasets clarifies synergistic impacts operating in the region and provides a more nuanced understanding of changes in both the forest and the market based on information gleaned from hunting practices and hunter interviews. This research demonstrates the potential pitfalls of using a singular approach to make recommendations on complex human-environment issues. Such cross-disciplinary mixed-methods approaches will further understandings of dynamic wildlife populations and forge more informed environmental policy recommendations.

EDITOR'S NOTE
In this chapter our two New Zealand authors, Lesley Robinson and Sue Vaealiki, highlight ethics as a guide that provides tools for teaching and learning about environmental, educational, social and cultural issues and topics. They identify the ethics of caring, listening, participating and hopefulness as central to ECEfS and justify why this is so. They also propose a set of pedagogies that have resonance with ECEfS. These are interdisciplinary learning, co-constructing ‘working theories’ for living sustainably, building respectful relationships and participating in communities of action. It is the authors' belief that (re)considering the ethical and pedagogical foundations of early childhood education so that environmental and sustainability issues and topics are addressed, requires new professional journeys for early childhood teachers. These journeys offer challenges and great rewards for those who believe that children – in collaboration with their families and communities – can be rich and competent citizens of the present who already have capacities and capabilities to influence the future.
INTRODUCTION
The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) (2005–2014) refocuses educational sectors on their role in ensuring that ‘people learn to live in sustainable ways’ (Parliamentary Commission for the Environment, 2004). The vision for this DESD is to create change at both personal and societal levels for a just and equitable world in which natural resources are protected for future generations.

Caffeine and caffeinated coffee (CC) elicit acute insulin insensitivity when ingested before a carbohydrate load. The effects of CC on glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity when co-ingested with a high carbohydrate meal and on postprandial metabolism of a subsequent (second) carbohydrate load have not been studied. In a randomised, crossover design, ten healthy males ingested either CC (5 mg caffeine/kg body weight), decaffeinated coffee (DC) or water (W; equal volume) co-ingested with a high glycaemic index cereal followed 3 h later by a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test. After the initial meal, insulin area under the curve (AUC) and insulin sensitivity index did not differ between treatments, although glucose AUC for CC (107 (sem 18) mmol/l × 3 h) and DC (74 (sem 15) mmol/l × 3 h) was greater than W ( − 0·2 (sem 29) mmol/l × 3 h, P < 0·05). After the second carbohydrate load, insulin AUC for CC was 49 % and 57 % greater (P < 0·01) than for DC and W, respectively. Despite the greater insulin response, glucose AUC for CC (217 (sem 24) mmol/l × 2 h) was greater than both DC (126 (sem 11) mmol/l × 2 h, P = 0·01) and W (55 (sem 34) mmol/l × 2 h, P < 0·001). Insulin sensitivity index after the second meal was lower after CC (8·2 (sem 0·9)) compared with both DC (12·4 (sem 1·2), P < 0·01) and W (13·4 (sem 1·4), P < 0·001). Co-ingestion of CC with one meal resulted in insulin insensitivity during the postprandial phase of a second meal in the absence of further CC ingestion. Thus, CC may play a role in daily glycaemic management.

Uttering the phrase knowledge management (KM) evokes all sorts of facial expressions in different audiences ranging from bewilderment, confusion and non-chalance through to blatant boredom. As an independent consultant working in this area, I am particularly attuned to these facial expressions when I address I this subject. I prefer my clients to be in the ‘bewildered’ or ‘confused’ state as this indicates they think that KM could be important to them but they are not sure how it could impact their businesses. Many also have an underlying enthusiasm for the topic as there is still a lot of buzz and talk about the ‘knowledge economy’. Those in the ‘non-chalant’ and ‘bored’ categories are much harder to turn around as they have probably ‘already tried knowledge management and it didn’t work. Their initial enthusiasm has turned to cynicism, they do not like being told they got it wrong but they are looking for ways to recoup their investment of both time and money.
