Meadow hawkweed is an invasive, perennial forb of upland forest openings, mountain meadows, permanent pastures, and abandoned farmlands in the Pacific Northwest. The objective of this study was to measure the plant community response, following meadow hawkweed control using selective herbicides and a single application of N–P–K fertilizer, across three levels of meadow hawkweed infestation in cleared forestlands that had been converted to pasture in northern Idaho. Clopyralid was applied to meadow hawkweed rosettes at a rate of 0.59l kg ae ha−1 (0.528 lb ac−1), and fertilizer (23–5–5, 1% Fe, 14% S) was broadcast following herbicide applications at two rates, 44 and 88 kg N ha−1. Foliar cover of meadow hawkweed, Idaho fescue, and other perennial grasses was measured in microplots at three levels of initial meadow hawkweed cover; < 25%, 40 to 60%, and > 75%. Clopyralid treatments resulted in excellent meadow hawkweed control 3 mo after treatment (MAT). Clopyralid alone appeared to shift the competitive balance in favor of perennial grasses, which increased 7, 44, and 65% above pretreatment levels in LOW, MED, and HIGH hawkweed cover plots, respectively, across fertilizer treatments. Meadow hawkweed cover remained < 5% in clopyralid plots at 52 MAT. Fertilizer effects were confined to interactions between Idaho fescue and other perennial grasses.

Summary
The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is composed of a series of organs whose collective aim is to extract and absorb nutrients from food, and expel undigested matter as waste. As the lumen of the GI tract is essentially outside of the body, it is not surprising to find that the physical interface between “self” and the outside world is quite complex. The gut must be able to withstand fluctuations associated with changes in temperature, pH, and osmolarity, as well as overcome and respond to microbiota residence and the associated release of immunostimulatory molecules and detergent-like substances. As such, the mucosa has evolved to act as a first line of defense, its repertoire including (1) the spatial secretion of protective substances (acid, bicarbonate, and mucus); (2) the presence of tight junctions to limit the passive diffusion of harmful substances; (3) the mucosal microcirculation which enables rapid dilution/removal of noxious stimuli; and (4) the mucosal immune system where resident and blood-borne immunocytes and granulocytes are mobilized to initiate an appropriate inflammatory response. This so-called mucosal defense is supported by a catalogue of endogenous mediators; together these act to dampen the inflammatory response, which results from the aggressive accumulation of tissue-damaging metabolites.
The aim of this chapter is to review current knowledge regarding mediators involved in the pathogenesis of GI disease, with particular reference to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-induced gastropathy and colitis. We will address mediators that play a key role in the proresolution phase of inflammation, and discuss some of the new therapeutic approaches aimed at promoting mucosal healing and tissue homeostasis.

The present study investigated the prevalence of upwards bullying — that is, subordinate-initiated bullying of their supervisor — in two sample groups. Subordinates (n = 491) in this study were either thesis students working under the supervision of an academic advisor or were employees working under a primary supervisor in a variety of occupations. Participants completed a measure of bullying behaviours, the Negative Acts Questionnaire, as part of an online survey. Although the overall prevalence of bullies was low (1.7%), there was a high incidence of bullying behaviour with 70.6% of the sample reporting having engaged in bullying behaviours toward their supervisor in the preceding 6 month period. The incidence of bullying behaviours was lower for the students than for the employees and lower for females than for males. Implications for workplaces are considered.

Objective
Health targets describe government intentions for improving population health. The present paper determines whether the targets which twelve developed countries have set for obesity match the seriousness of the public health problem.
DesignPolicy documents on general public health, obesity, nutrition and physical activity were obtained by repeated searches of government websites. Details of all relevant targets on overweight, obesity, nutrition and physical activity were extracted.
ResultsOnly four of the countries studied have set targets for specific reductions in the prevalence of obesity. Two have targets that only mention reducing the prevalence of obesity and two other countries wish to halt the rise in prevalence. Two countries currently have targets which are much less ambitious than those in previous policies. No obesity targets are stated in the policies of four countries. Many of the countries studied have set detailed nutrition targets, but these seldom identify desired changes in dietary behaviour. No country has set targets for a reduction in energy intake. The physical activity targets reflect recommendations from the 1990s. Few targets are set for health knowledge or behavioural intentions which are prerequisites for desired lifestyle changes.
ConclusionsMost of the countries studied have either set no targets or set very modest targets for reducing the prevalence of obesity. Many countries have physical activity targets that are likely to be insufficient to prevent obesity. Governments need to reconsider targets on obesity and to develop shorter-term targets which monitor desired lifestyle changes.

Extensive research has been focused on advancing the breeding season of the ewe but little is known about the duration of the natural breeding season and if this is influenced by previous breeding management. Lambing percentage declines after the winter solstice but it would appear conception rate is maintained or improved (King, 1990). Oestrus cycles also appear to become naturally synchronised at this time giving a compact lambing without the use of teaser rams or exogenous substances. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of management history on the onset and duration of ovarian activity in the commercially important Mule (Bluefaced Leicester x Blackface/Swaledale) ewe and on ovulation rate measured on three occasions during the natural breeding season.

There is increasing interest in the development of later lambing systems for crossbred ewes which more closely match ewe nutritional requirements with herbage growth (Stone, 1988; Mitchell, 1990). It has long been recognised however that at extremes of the natural breeding season fecundity is reduced, a possible consequence of seasonal variations in ovulation rate, fertilisation and/or embryo survival (Hammond, 1944). Daylength is the factor which entrains the endogenous rhythm of reproduction in sheep (Donovan, O’Callaghan, Karsh, Boland and Roche, 1992) and daylength changes per se may be responsible for variations in reproductive response throughout the breeding season. Associated environmental and management factors may also be of importance. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of management history and month of mating on ovulation and lambing rates in Mule ewes.

This presentation will discuss search dogs in general, their training, and the experience the dog teams had in the Mexico City earthquake. All of the search dogs in Mexico City, those from the U.S. and other countries, are trained similarly and have a similar job to do. What I will do is explain how the dogs are trained and what they can do.
It is my intention to discuss air scenting dogs, their use and training. You have to remember that the dog and the handler are a team and they train together, they live together, and they work together. The discussion will focus only on the dogs' training.
