Epidemiological studies suggest health-protective effects of flavan-3-ols and their derived compounds on chronic diseases. The present study aimed to estimate dietary flavan-3-ol, proanthocyanidin (PA) and theaflavin intakes, their food sources and potential determinants in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) calibration cohort. Dietary data were collected using a standardised 24 h dietary recall software administered to 36 037 subjects aged 35–74 years. Dietary data were linked with a flavanoid food composition database compiled from the latest US Department of Agriculture and Phenol-Explorer databases and expanded to include recipes, estimations and retention factors. Total flavan-3-ol intake was the highest in UK Health-conscious men (453·6 mg/d) and women of UK General population (377·6 mg/d), while the intake was the lowest in Greece (men: 160·5 mg/d; women: 124·8 mg/d). Monomer intake was the highest in UK General population (men: 213·5 mg/d; women: 178·6 mg/d) and the lowest in Greece (men: 26·6 mg/d in men; women: 20·7 mg/d). Theaflavin intake was the highest in UK General population (men: 29·3 mg/d; women: 25·3 mg/d) and close to zero in Greece and Spain. PA intake was the highest in Asturias (men: 455·2 mg/d) and San Sebastian (women: 253 mg/d), while being the lowest in Greece (men: 134·6 mg/d; women: 101·0 mg/d). Except for the UK, non-citrus fruits (apples/pears) were the highest contributors to the total flavan-3-ol intake. Tea was the main contributor of total flavan-3-ols in the UK. Flavan-3-ol, PA and theaflavin intakes were significantly different among all assessed groups. This study showed heterogeneity in flavan-3-ol, PA and theaflavin intake throughout the EPIC countries.

BOOMERanG has recently resolved structures on the last scattering surface at redshift ˜ 1100 with high signal to noise ratio. We review the technical advances which made this possible, and we focus on the current results for maps and power spectra, with special attention to the determination of the total mass-energy density in the Universe and of other cosmological parameters.

In the 1998-99 flight, BOOMERanG has produced maps of ∼4% of the sky at high Galactic latitudes, at frequencies of 90, 150, 240 and 410 GHz, with resolution ≳ 10'. The faint structure of the Cosmic Microwave Background at horizon and sub-horizon scales is evident in these maps. These maps compare well to the maps recently obtained at lower frequencies by the WMAP experiment. Here we compare the amplitude and morphology of the structures observed in the two sets of maps. We also outline the polarization sensitive version of BOOMERanG, which was flown early this year to measure the linear polarization of the microwave sky at 150, 240 and 350 GHz.

We investigate the optical properties of InGaAs QDs emitting at 1330 nm, directly grown by Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) in a GaAs matrix, without indium in the barrier. The PL characterization of this new kind of QDs, shows very narrow lineshape at room temperature and a strong reduction of the temperature dependent quenching of the emission (a factor of 3 from 30 K to 300 K).
The quantum external efficiency obtained by inserting such QDs into light emitting diode structures, despite the low dot density (1.6*109 cm−2), is 0.03%. This value corresponds to an individual QD efficiency about 30% higher than that reported in the literature for state of art InGaAs/InGaAs QD LEDs.

We present the fabrication of a Quantum Dot Microcavity Light Emitting Diode (QD-MCLED) emitting at 1.3 μm at room temperature. The long wavelength emission is achieved by using for the first time InGaAs QDs directly grown on GaAs, by metal organic chemical vapour deposition. Electroluminescence bright emission, peaked at 1298 nm with a FWHM of 6.5 meV and a line shape independent on the applied bias is found.

By means of a systematic study carried out on In0.5Ga0.5As/GaAs quantum dot electroluminescent devices grown by Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition, we show that the combination of internal electric fields in such structures dramatically blue shifts the emission wavelength with respect the photoluminescence emission that occurs at the expected value of 1.3 νm at room temperature. By comparing photoluminescence (PL), electroluminescence (EL) and photocurrent (PC) measurements in In0.5Ga0.5As QD structures emitting between 1.28 νm and 1.4 νm (at 300 K), we demonstrate that the electric field associated to the built-in dipole in the dots, directed from the base of the dots to their apex, and the device junction field (when parallel to the dipole field) lead to the depletion of the ground state. As a consequence, structures grown on n-type GaAs substrates exhibit electroluminescence only from the excited states. Instead, by growing the same device structure on p-type GaAs substrates, i.e. by reversing the direction of the built-in electric field of the device, the effect of the permanent dipole is strongly reduced, thus allowing us to obtain EL emission at the designed wavelength of 1.3 νm at 300 K, coincident to the PL. The consequence on the achievement of efficient lasing in the spectral region of interest for optical transmission. are illustrate.
