The International Mineralogical Association's approved amphibole nomenclature has been revised in order to simplify it, make it more consistent with divisions generally at 50%, define prefixes and modifiers more precisely and include new amphibole species discovered and named since 1978, when the previous scheme was approved. The same reference axes form the basis of the new scheme and most names are little changed but compound species names like tremolitic hornblende (now magnesiohornblende) are abolished and also crossite (now glaucophane or ferroglaucophane or magnesioriebeckite or riebeckite), tirodite (now manganocummingtonite) and dannemorite (now manganogrunerite). The 50% rule has been broken only to retain tremolite and actinolite as in the 1978 scheme so the sodic calcic amphibole range has therefore been expanded. Alkali amphiboles are now sodic amphiboles. The use of hyphens is defined. New amphibole names approved since 1978 include nyböite, leakeite, kornite, ungarettiite, sadanagaite and cannilloite. All abandoned names are listed. The formulae and source of the amphibole end member names are listed and procedures outlined to calculate Fe3+ and Fe2+ when not determined by analysis.

Firestone (2014) asserted evidence for numerous (23) nearby (d < 300 pc) supernovae (SNe) within the Middle and Late Pleistocene. If true, this would have strong implications for the irradiation of the Earth; at this rate, the mass extinction level events due to SNe would be more frequent than 100 Myr. However, there are numerous errors in the application of past research. The paper overestimates likely nitrate and 14C production from moderately nearby SNe by about four orders of magnitude. Moreover, the results are based on wrongly selected (obsolete) nitrate and 14C datasets. The use of correct and up-to-date datasets does not confirm the claimed results. The claims in the paper are invalid.

This work describes the Wenlock sedimentary sequences south of Killary Harbour where the fullest successions in north-west Galway are exposed; much of the Upper Silurian in the east (Joyces Country) has been removed by erosion.
The Wenlock beds (the Upper Owenduff and Killary Harbour Groups) rest on shallow marine and continental sediments (the Lower Owenduff Group) of Upper Llandovery (C5–6) age. Conglomerates near the base of the Wenlock are followed by 1,500 m of sandstones, which are mostly turbidites and which contain Middle Wenlock graptolites. These basin deposits are succeeded by a transitional sequence of rise, slope and shelf clastics, also of Middle Wenlock age. The youngest Silurian beds exposed are 800 m of red lagoonal deposits with Lingula.
During Wenlock times, the sediment supply to north-west Galway was mainly from the north and north-west. This observation fits well with the regional picture which places Galway near the north-west margin of a Silurian basin which extended eastwards across Ireland.

We summarize the results of two experiments to address important issues related to the correlation between planet frequencies and properties and the metallicity of the hosts. Our results can usefully inform formation, structural, and evolutionary models of gas giant planets.

Background. Family studies have suggested that eating disorders and mood disorders may coaggregate in families. To study further this question, data from a family interview study of probands with and without major depressive disorder was examined.
Method. A bivariate proband predictive logistic regression model was applied to data from a family interview study, conducted in Innsbruck, Austria, of probands with (N=64) and without (N=58) major depressive disorder, together with 330 of their first-degree relatives.
Results. The estimated odds ratio (OR) for the familial aggregation of eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder) was 7·0 (95% CI 1·4, 28; P=0·006); the OR for the familial aggregation of mood disorders (major depression and bipolar disorder) was 2·2 (0·92, 5·4; P=0·076); and for the familial coaggregation of eating disorders with mood disorders the OR was 2·2 (1·1, 4·6; P=0·035).
Conclusions. The familial coaggregation of eating disorders with mood disorders was significant and of the same magnitude as the aggregation of mood disorders alone – suggesting that eating disorders and mood disorders have common familial causal factors.

Gap junction channels serve important functions for the homeostasis of organ systems. These membrane channels serve as low-resistance pathways for the diffusion of small molecular species such as ions, metabolites and second messengers between two neighboring cells (1). Recent intense investigations have been pursuing the effects that defects in gap junction proteins, the connexins, have in hereditary diseases. Mutations in the primary sequence of several connexins have been shown to be responsible for several hereditary human diseases including X-linked Charcot-Marie- Tooth demyelinating neuropathies, nonsyndromic sensorineural deafness, erythrokeratodermia and congenital cataractogenesis (c.f. (2, 3) for recent reviews). Many of the published mutations are being investigated thoroughly to determine at what stage and why the protein fails to make functional channels. Steps involved in connexin trafficking and assembly are: translation of the protein; transport from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus; oligomerization of the subunits into a hexamer (called a connexon); transport of the connexon to non-junctional areas of the plasma membrane; correct docking with a partner connexon from an apposing cell to form a functional intercellular channel; and incorporation into aggregates (gap junction plaques).

The effect of level of feed intake in pregnancy and in lactation upon the productivity of sows

Eight research and teaching centres have co-operated in an experiment involving 132 sows. Six treatments were used, combining three levels of feeding in pregnancy with two in lactation. Pregnancy treatments were High 3−2 kg meal/day, Medium 2·4 kg/day and Low 1·6 kg/day; in lactation either a high level, 4·1 kg plus 0·2 kg/pig (h) or a medium level, 2·3 kg plus 0·2 kg/pig (m) were given. The sows were maintained on the same nutritional regime for three parities although inevitably some sows were lost before the completion of the trial. Sow live-weight gains in pregnancy were directly related to feed intake; in lactation, losses in sow live weight were dependent on gains made in the previous pregnancy and on the level fed while suckling. After the first parity, in which animals fed the low level in pregnancy tended to produce larger litters (though the difference was not significant), there were no differences in numbers born attributable to treatments.
Increases in the feed intake of sows in pregnancy resulted in consistent and significant increases in the weight of the pigs at birth. This increase in birth weight also resulted in an increase in weight at weaning in the second and third parities. Level of feeding in lactation, which had a highly significant effect on sow live weight, had much less influence on weaning weights of pigs. There were no consistent pregnancy × lactation interactions, the effects of treatments in the two phases being additive.
An assessment is made of the relative efficiency of the six treatments and the value of the experiment is discussed in relation to other studies concerned with sow nutrition.
