Summary
Creativity – the ability to generate original productions that are meaningful in their context – is a culturally embedded phenomenon. It may involve a person or a group of people who create. The cultural context in which the creative act occurs (with its physical and social facets) has many levels, ranging from the family, school, and work-organizational settings to local community, regional, national, or transnational ones. Culture, as a social environment, can be defined as “an historically transmitted pattern of meanings visible and tangible in symbols. A system of conceptions is inherited and expressed in symbolic forms. These forms are the means by which men and women (or human beings) communicate, continue their culture, and develop their knowledge about and attitudes toward life” (Geertz, 1973, p. 89). In the GLOBE international research program, House and Javidan (2004, p. 15) defined culture as “shared motives, values, beliefs, identities, and interpretations or meanings of significant events that result from common experiences of members of collectives and are transmitted across age generations.”

Summary
Culture – defined as pattern of symbolically encoded meaning that develops and is transmitted socially over time – impacts creativity. In this chapter, two main cultural perspectives on creativity are examined. First, the sociocultural psychology of creativity – an approach that is based on a view of interdependence between person and culture and that looks at creative action in its cultural context – is introduced and discussed. Second, the approach that focuses on comparing creative expression in two or more contexts is presented and the main findings from this field of research are reviewed. As an extension of the latter perspective, we review, at the end of the chapter, research that investigates the impact of exposure to multiple cultures and the use of cultural tools – including modern technologies – on creativity.

The crushing strength or compression strength is a fundamental mechanical property for reticulated ceramic foams. There are essential influencing variables such as the rate of the applied load, the size of the applied load area, the sample size, and the strut homogeneity of the samples. In this work, the impact of the variation of the testing parameters on the crushing strength measurement was evaluated with the help of industrially produced ceramic foams made of Al2O3, ZrO2, SiC, and fused silica. The results indicate that the rate of the applied load has no significant influence on the crushing strength of the ceramic foams. Whereas the size of the applied load area and the sample size have an evident influence. The experimental results were compared with the minimum principal stress distribution calculated with FEM.

Accurate assessment of neonatal body composition is essential to studies investigating neonatal nutrition or developmental origins of obesity. Bioelectrical impedance analysis or bioimpedance analysis is inexpensive, non-invasive and portable, and is widely used in adults for the assessment of body composition. There are currently no prediction algorithms using bioimpedance analysis in neonates that have been directly validated against measurements of fat-free mass (FFM). The aim of the study was to evaluate the use of bioimpedance analysis for the estimation of FFM and percentage of body fat over the first 4 months of life in healthy infants born at term, and to compare these with estimations based on anthropometric measurements (weight and length) and with skinfolds. The present study was an observational study in seventy-seven infants. Body fat content of infants was assessed at birth, 6 weeks, 3 and 4·5 months of age by air displacement plethysmography, using the PEA POD body composition system. Bioimpedance analysis was performed at the same time and the data were used to develop and test prediction equations for FFM. The combination of weight+sex+length predicted FFM, with a bias of < 100 g and limits of agreement of 6–13 %. Before 3 months of age, bioimpedance analysis did not improve the prediction of FFM or body fat. At 3 and 4·5 months, the inclusion of impedance in prediction algorithms resulted in small improvements in prediction of FFM, reducing the bias to < 50 g and limits of agreement to < 9 %. Skinfold measurements performed poorly at all ages.
