Verbal memory declines more in female patients with Parkinson's disease: the importance of gender-corrected normative data

Background
Data on gender-specific profiles of cognitive functions in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are rare and inconsistent, and possible disease-confounding factors have been insufficiently considered.
MethodThe LANDSCAPE study on cognition in PD enrolled 656 PD patients (267 without cognitive impairment, 66% male; 292 with mild cognitive impairment, 69% male; 97 with PD dementia, 69% male). Raw values and age-, education-, and gender-corrected Z scores of a neuropsychological test battery (CERAD-Plus) were compared between genders. Motor symptoms, disease duration, l-dopa equivalent daily dose, depression - and additionally age and education for the raw value analysis - were taken as covariates.
ResultsRaw-score analysis replicated results of previous studies in that female PD patients were superior in verbal memory (word list learning, p = 0.02; recall, p = 0.03), while men outperformed women in visuoconstruction (p = 0.002) and figural memory (p = 0.005). In contrast, gender-corrected Z scores showed that men were superior in verbal memory (word list learning, p = 0.02; recall, p = 0.02; recognition, p = 0.04), while no difference was found for visuospatial tests. This picture could be observed both in the overall analysis of PD patients as well as in a differentiated group analysis.
ConclusionsNormative data corrected for gender and other sociodemographic variables are relevant, since they may elucidate a markedly different cognitive profile compared to raw scores. Our study also suggests that verbal memory decline is stronger in women than in men with PD. Future studies are needed to replicate these findings, examine the progression of gender-specific cognitive decline in PD and define different underlying mechanisms of this dysfunction.

IRC + 10216, a bright infrared late type carbon star, is observed to have millimetre range line emission of the species 12CO, 13CO, CS, C2H, HC3N, CN, HCN, SiS and SiO in an extended envelope around the central infrared sources. The infrared emission arises from two concentric dust shells around the star: an inner 0”.2 arc radius shell of 600 K and optically thick, i.e. radiating as 600 K black body, and an outer shell 1″.0 arc radius at 375 K and optically thin for λ ≳ 2μ. A model explaining the line emission in terms of infrared pumping between the two lowest vibrational levels, first proposed by Morris (1975a) for IRC + 10216, was used to calculate antenna temperatures for various rotational transitions of HC3N; since there is a prima facie agreement between the calculated and observed values for HC3N we have attempted the same calculation for DC3N.

A 𝔻-semiclassical weight is one which satisfies a particular linear, first-order homogeneous equation in a divided-difference operator 𝔻. It is known that the system of polynomials, orthogonal with respect to this weight, and the associated functions satisfy a linear, first-order homogeneous matrix equation in the divided-difference operator termed the spectral equation. Attached to the spectral equation is a structure which constitutes a number of relations such as those arising from compatibility with the three-term recurrence relation. Here this structure is elucidated in the general case of quadratic lattices. The simplest examples of the 𝔻-semiclassical orthogonal polynomial systems are precisely those in the Askey table of hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. However within the 𝔻-semiclassical class it is entirely natural to define a generalization of the Askey table weights which involve a deformation with respect to new deformation variables. We completely construct the analogous structures arising from such deformations and their relations with the other elements of the theory. As an example we treat the first nontrivial deformation of the Askey–Wilson orthogonal polynomial system defined by the q-quadratic divided-difference operator, the Askey–Wilson operator, and derive the coupled first-order divided-difference equations characterizing its evolution in the deformation variable. We show that this system is a member of a sequence of classical solutions to the q-Painlevé system.

Background
Recent genetic studies found the A allele of the variant rs1006737 in the alpha 1C subunit of the L-type voltage-gated calcium channel (CACNA1C) gene to be over-represented in patients with psychosis, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. In these disorders, attention deficits are among the main cognitive symptoms and have been related to altered neural activity in cerebral attention networks. The particular effect of CACNA1C on neural function, such as attention networks, remains to be elucidated.
MethodThe current event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study investigated the effect of the CACNA1C gene on brain activity in 80 subjects while performing a scanner-adapted version of the Attention Network Test (ANT). Three domains of attention were probed simultaneously: alerting, orienting and executive control of attention.
ResultsRisk allele carriers showed impaired performance in alerting and orienting in addition to reduced neural activity in the right inferior parietal lobule [Brodmann area (BA) 40] during orienting and in the medial frontal gyrus (BA 8) during executive control of attention. These areas belong to networks that have been related to impaired orienting and executive control mechanisms in neuropsychiatric disorders.
ConclusionsOur results suggest that CACNA1C plays a role in the development of specific attention deficits in psychiatric disorders by modulation of neural attention networks.

The probability that an interval I is free of eigenvalues in a matrix ensemble with unitary symmetry is given by a Fredholm determinant. When the weight function in the matrix ensemble is a classical weight function, and the interval I includes an endpoint of the support, Tracy and Widom have given a formalism which gives coupled differential equations for the required probability and some auxiliary quantities. We summarize and extend earlier work by expressing the probability and some of the auxiliary quantities in terms of Painlevé transcendents.

Commission 21 consists of IAU members and consultants with expertise and interest in the study of the light of the night sky and its various diffuse components, at all accessible electromagnetic frequencies. In cosmic distance scales, the subjects of Commission 21 range from airglow and tropospheric scattering in Earth's atmosphere, through zodiacal light in the solar system, including thermal emission from interplanetary dust, integrated starlight in the Milky Way galaxy, diffuse galactic light due to dust scattering in the galactic diffuse interstellar medium, thermal emissions from interstellar dust and free free emission from ionized interstellar gas, to various diffuse extragalactic background sources, including the cosmologically important cosmic microwave background (CMB). Observations of the diffuse night sky brightness at any frequency typically include signals from several of these sources, and it has been the historic mandate of Commission 21 to foster the necessary collaboration of experts from the different astronomical sub-disciplines involved.

Purpose: To evaluate the role of retrograde urethrography in treatment planning for salvage external beam radiotherapy in patients with increasing prostate-specific antigen levels after radical prostatectomy.
Methods and Materials: From July 1988 to December 2002, 173 consecutive patients received external beam radiotherapy for increasing prostate-specific antigen levels after radical prostatectomy. All 173 simulation films were reviewed, and retrograde urethrography was performed in 148 patients (86%). The distance between the line connecting the lower poles of the ischial tuberosities and site of abrupt narrowing of contrast material was measured in all 148 patients. This distance was compared with that measured in 148 consecutive patients with intact prostates who had retrograde urethrography while undergoing treatment planning for definitive radiotherapy.
Results: The mean (median) distance from the line connecting the lower poles of the ischial tuberosities to the abrupt narrowing seen in the urethrogram in patients with increasing prostate-specific antigen levels was 1.54cm (1.50cm) compared with 1.73cm (1.80cm) in those with intact prostates (p = 0.0145).
Conclusion: Retrograde urethrography is important in treatment planning for salvage radiotherapy of the prostate bed after radical prostatectomy to adequately treat the apex of the prostate bed.

Commission 21, one of IAU's smallest commissions, consists of some hundred members and consultants working to understand and describe the light of the night sky with emphasis on the diffuse components. Many more work on these topics without being members of the commission. Light is here defined in its broader sense of electromagnetic radiation of any frequency. The diffuse components of the light of the night sky encompass a variety of physical phenomena over the full range of cosmic distance scales and include scattered light, thermal emission, line emission, and any other emission phenomena producing a diffuse light source. These attract interest not only as scientific topics of study in their own right but also as an unwanted foreground or background against which all other sky phenomena are observed. Commission 21 has for mandate to promote research and availability of results on issues related to the diffuse light of the night sky. This document is a report on activities in this field and is not confined to the activities of its members, no distinction is made between work carried out by commission members and non commission members. The report is organized starting with a summary of the state of broad surveys that provide most of the observations. The report on developments in the various disciplines start with the sources closest to the observer known as airglow and progresses by way of the interplanetary and interstellar mediums to the increasingly distant integrated starlight, diffuse galactic light and diffuse emission in other galaxies ending with the extragalactic background radiation.
Application of the τ-function theory of Painlevé equations to random matrices: PVI, the JUE, CyUE, cJUE and scaled limits

Okamoto has obtained a sequence of τ-functions for the PVI system expressed as a double Wronskian determinant based on a solution of the Gauss hypergeometric equation. Starting with integral solutions of the Gauss hypergeometric equation, we show that the determinant can be re-expressed as multidimensional integrals, and these in turn can be identified with averages over the eigenvalue probability density function for the Jacobi unitary ensemble (JUE), and the Cauchy unitary ensemble (CyUE) (the latter being equivalent to the circular Jacobi unitary ensemble (cJUE)). Hence these averages, which depend on four continuous parameters and the discrete parameter N, can be characterised as the solution of the second order second degree equation satisfied by the Hamiltonian in the PVI theory. We show that the Hamiltonian also satisfies an equation related to the discrete PV equation, thus providing an alternative characterisation in terms of a difference equation. In the case of the cJUE, the spectrum singularity scaled limit is considered, and the evaluation of a certain four parameter average is given in terms of the general PV transcendent in σ form. Applications are given to the evaluation of the spacing distribution for the circular unitary ensemble (CUE) and its scaled counterpart, giving formulas more succinct than those known previously; to expressions for the hard edge gap probability in the scaled Laguerre orthogonal ensemble (LOE) (parameter a a non-negative integer) and Laguerre symplectic ensemble (LSE) (parameter a an even non-negative integer) as finite dimensional combinatorial integrals over the symplectic and orthogonal groups respectively; to the evaluation of the cumulative distribution function for the last passage time in certain models of directed percolation; to the τ-function evaluation of the largest eigenvalue in the finite LOE and LSE with parameter a = 0; and to the characterisation of the diagonal-diagonal spin-spin correlation in the two-dimensional Ising model.
