Seasonal variations in the properties and structural composition of sea ice and snow cover in the Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas, Antarctica

Sixty-three ice cores were collected in the Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas in August and September 1993 during a cruise of the R.V. Nathaniel B. Palmer. The structure and stable-isotopic composition (18O/16O) of the cores were investigated in order to understand the growth conditions and to identify the key growth processes, particularly the contribution of snow to sea-ice formation. The structure and isotopic composition of a set of 12 cores that was collected for the same purpose in the Bellingshausen Sea in March 1992 are reassessed. Frazil ice and congelation ice contribute 44% and 26%, respectively, to the composition of both the winter and summer ice-core sets, evidence that the relatively calm conditions that favour congelation-ice formation are neither as common nor as prolonged as the more turbulent conditions that favour frazil-ice growth and pancake-ice formation. Both frazil- and congelation-ice layers have an av erage thickness of 0.12 m in winter, evidence that congelation ice and pancake ice thicken primarily by dynamic processes. The thermodynamic development of the ice cover relies heavily on the formation of snow ice at the surface of floes after sea water has flooded the snow cover. Snow-ice layers have a mean thickness of 0.20 and 0.28 m in the winter and summer cores, respectively, and the contribution of snow ice to the winter (24%) and summer (16%) core sets exceeds most quantities that have been reported previously in other Antarctic pack-ice zones. The thickness and quantity of snow ice may be due to a combination of high snow-accumulation rates and snow loads, environmental conditions that favour a warm ice cover in which brine convection between the bottom and top of the ice introduces sea water to the snow/ice interface, and bottom melting losses being compensated by snow-ice formation. Layers of superimposed ice at the top of each of the summer cores make up 4.6% of the ice that was examined and they increase by a factor of 3 the quantity of snow entrained in the ice. The accumulation of superimposed ice is evidence that melting in the snow cover on Antarctic sea-ice floes ran reach an advanced stage and contribute a significant amount of snow to the total ice mass.

Using semi-empirical isochrones, we find the age of the Taurus star-forming region to be 3-4 Myr. Comparing the disc fraction in Taurus to young massive clusters suggests discs survive longer in this low density environment. We also present a method of photometrically de-reddening young stars using iZJH data.

Seeking Help for Disaster Services After a Flood

Objectives: This article describes how the frequency of exposure to a flood is associated with the probability of seeking help from agencies (eg, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Red Cross) that provide disaster-related services. The article also describes the population characteristics for the people who are most likely to seek help for disaster services.
Methods: Prospective cohort data from 1735 respondents of the Iowa Health Poll were used. Multivariate logistic regression was used to model the odds of seeking help from any agency for flood-related problems.
Results: Overall, most people, regardless of flood exposure, did not seek help from disaster service agencies. Disaster services were sought by 23% of respondents who experienced 1 flood, 31% who have experienced 2 floods, and 26% who have experienced 3 or more floods. Multivariate adjusted odds of seeking help were associated with number of flood experiences (odds ratio [OR] 1.58), white race (OR 0.24), economic hardship (OR 1.43), urban residence (OR 0.43), and social support (OR 0.55).
Conclusions: On average, the probability of seeking disaster relief services increases with the number of flood experiences. Racial/ethnic minorities, rural residents, economically challenged individuals, and people with low levels of perceived social support may be more likely than people without these characteristics to seek services. At the conclusion of Barack Obama's State of the Union address on January 27, 2010, MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews lavished praise on the president, infamously gushing, “It's interesting: he is post-racial, by appearances. I forgot he was Black tonight for an hour.” According to many, this is the greatest of all Obama's super-powers; the ability to sweet-talk the public into a euphoric political hallucination, transporting followers into a world where he is cleansed of the stain of Blackness and the citizenry lives in racial harmony. If this is true, White voters, including Matthews, forgot Obama was Black long before the State the Union. By many accounts, this post-racial amnesia, rather than the nuts and bolts of voter mobilization, fundraising, message-crafting, or opponents' mistakes, ultimately resulted in Obama's victory in the 2008 election.

We present three new methods for determining the age of groups of pre-main-sequence stars. The first, creating empirical isochrones allows us to create a robust age ordering, but not to derive actual ages. The second, using the width of the gap in colour-magnitude space between the pre-main-sequence and main-sequence (the radiative convective gap) has promise as a distance and extinction independent measure of age, but is as yet uncalibrated. Finally we discuss τ2 fitting of the main sequence as the stars approach the terminus of the main sequence. This method suggests that there is a factor two difference between these “nuclear” ages, and more conventional pre-main-sequence contraction ages.

Electrical resistivity measurements performed under applied hydrostatic pressure and in magnetic fields have been used to probe the hidden order (HO) and superconducting (SC) states of URu2Si2, which have ambient-pressure transition temperatures TO = 17.5 K and Tc = 1.5 K, respectively. TO increases with applied pressure and a distinct kink in its pressure dependence is observed at 15 kbar; this feature is associated with the onset of antiferromagnetism. The pressure dependence of the SC upper critical field has been measured with the external field aligned parallel to both crystalline axes. The SC phase is smoothly suppressed to a critical pressure of about 15 kbar and no qualitative change in the critical field curves is observed. The co-evolution of the HO and SC phases is discussed within the context of a model in which the two phases compete for Fermi surface fraction.

Single crystals of URu2-xRexSi2 have been grown via the Czochralski technique. Detailed electrical transport studies under pressure on single crystals of URu2Si2 confirm that the zero-temperature critical field is suppressed smoothly towards an extrapolated critical pressure of 15 kbar, which also corresponds to the accepted critical pressure of the hidden order phase. Improving on previous work on polycrystalline samples, studies of single crystals of URu2-xRexSi2 have provided more precise tracking of the suppression of both the hidden order phase at low doping and the ferromagnetic phase at intermediate Re concentrations.
Investigating biogeochemical signatures in the lichen Parmelia sulcata at Burnham Beeches, Buckinghamshire, England

Biogeochemical signatures were compared in ‘living’ and ‘dead’ Parmelia sulcata samples with their oak bark substratum. Eighteen elements reached maximum concentrations in ‘dead’ lichens, at lower concentrations than reported from industrial regions. High N concentrations in ‘dead’ lichens confirm exceedances of critical levels established for deciduous woodlands, supported by alien algae and ‘nitrophytic’ lichen colonization. Negative δ15N values recorded in lichen samples indicate N originated mainly from ammonia. Less negative δ15N values in healthy samples near busy roads suggest local NOx accumulation by Parmelia. Higher δ15N values in bark may result from different processes. Twenty-eight elements reach higher concentrations in healthy lichens near roads carrying higher traffic volumes. Thirteen elements correlate positively with lichen δ15N, suggesting that δ15N is a powerful indicator of the balance between agricultural and vehicular N influx. Maximum Ca and Sr concentrations recorded in bark and their spatial distribution suggest a local geological origin. High concentrations of Ga, Ba, Pb and Ni bark contents testify to a previous pollution legacy, including that from petrol which carried higher lead concentrations than today. Mn concentrations are higher than reported from other studies and show no clear relationship with local roads. Mn is known to limit lichen diversity and health in coniferous forests in US and Germany, but not yet in deciduous woodlands. Current atmospheric conditions and the former pollution legacy must be understood to conserve epiphytes and for biomonitoring.
Fermi liquid instabilities and superconductivity near quantum critical points in f-electron materials

Recent experiments on single crystals of the compounds CeRh1−xCoxIn5 and PrOs4Sb12 are briefly reviewed. The temperature-composition (T-x) phase diagram of the heavy fermion pseudoternary system CeRh1−xCoxIn5, delineating the regions in which superconductivity, antiferromagnetism, and the coexistence of these two phenomena occur, has been established. Entropy vs x isotherms and residual resistivity vs x plots exhibit peaks near the critical concentration xcr ≈ 0.8 at which the Néel temperature appears to vanish (quantum critical point). The filled skutterudite compound PrOs4Sb12 exhibits unconventional superconductivity below Tc = 1.85 K that involves heavy fermion quasiparticles with an effective mass m* ≈ 50 me, where me is the mass of the free electron. The unconventional superconducting state appears to consist of several distinct superconducting phases and to break time reversal symmetry. A high field ordered phase occurs below ∼ 1 K and between ∼ 4.5 T and ∼ 15 T that appears to be associated with quadrupolar order. The heavy fermion state and superconductivity in PrOs4Sb12 may originate from the interaction between Pr3+ electric quadrupole moments and the charges of the conduction electrons. When Ru is substituted for Os in PrOs4Sb12, a minimum in Tc occurs at Pr(Os0.4Ru0.6)4Sb12, suggesting a competition between two types of superconductivity.
Species and population structures of Pisolithus and Scleroderma identified by combined phenotypic and genomic marker analysis

Isolates of Pisolithus and Scleroderma species from different northern temperate and tropical geographical regions were subjected to analyses of pure culture morphology, colony growth rates, isozyme (allozyme) variation and ribosomal DNA (rDNA) restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs). Cultural characteristics enabled clear species separation of isolates and together with growth rates suggested geographically-linked intraspecific variability in the Pisolithus populations. Combined or method-specific hierarchical cluster analyses of allozyme polymorphisms and RFLPs of the fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and intergenic spacer (IGS) sequences confirmed the Scleroderma species groupings and considerable geographical and host-linked variation in the Pisolithus population. Isolates of Pisolithus from the Philippines were genetically very homogeneous and distinct from less related isolates from Europe, Scandinavia and North America. Based on the ITS–RFLP and isozyme polymorphism data, the isolates investigated probably represent four different ‘species groupings’ which supports similar findings from recent taxonomic and genetic studies of Australian Pisolithus species.
The detection of Glomus spp. (arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi) forming mycorrhizas in three plants, at different stages of seedling development, using mycorrhiza-specific isozymes

A series of glasshouse experiments was used to determine mycorrhiza-specific isozymes (MSIs) produced by five species of Glomus colonizing roots of a desert shrub legume (Anthyllis cytisoides L.), Thymus vulgaris L. and Allium porrum L. over time. Extracts of colonized roots were electrophoresed on non-denaturing polyacrylamide gels (PAGE) and stained for 10 different enzymes. Staining protocols for esterase, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase and malate dehydrogenase provided MSIs for the mycorrhizas formed by different arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi that had colonized roots of the three host plants. There was no apparent correlation between levels of colonization or arbuscular intensities, at or between each sampling, and the presence of MSIs. The development of colonization by the AM fungi differed little between the three plants when assessed with two methods of estimating fungal biomass. The variety of MSIs detected might reflect the diversity of metabolic activities of these Glomus species and, possibly, differing ecological functions. The high-level induction of two alkaline phosphatase MSIs in the mycorrhizas of Anthyllis cytisoides colonized by Glomus microaggregatum BEG56 was used to track the fate of this fungus when the same plant was inoculated and transplanted into a semi-arid site in south-east Spain. The probable fungal origin of the isozyme was indicated by detection of the same isozyme in the extraradical mycelium formed by Glomus microaggregatum BEG56 on Allium porrum. The use of MSIs to detect the mycorrhizas of species of Glomus in colonized roots is discussed.

Summary
Abstract
We present early results from the UK ROSAT Deep and Extended Deep Surveys. A total of 240 faint X-ray sources have been detected, most of which are expected to be QSOs and Seyfert galaxies at redshifts z < 3, although normal galaxies and starburst galaxies are also present. We will use these surveys, together with our parallel VLA 20cm & 6cm radio surveys and multicolour optical CCD surveys, to determine the evolution of the faint end of the X-ray and optical luminosity functions (LF) of QSOs, study the multiwaveband emission mechanisms of QSOs, map their distribution over a ‘wedge’ of high redshift sky, and investigate the X-ray evolution of distant clusters of galaxies.
The Multiwaveband Surveys.
The ROSAT survey was performed in a region of high-latitude sky of very low, and uniform, Galactic column density (71019 cm−2), as determined by our 21cm and IRAS 100µm measurements. The deep survey reaches a limiting X-ray flux of 410−15 erg cm−2s−1 (0.5–2keV) over a 40 arcmin diameter region of sky and contains 96 faint X-ray sources. The extended survey stretches over a 4° × 40 arcmin strip starting from the position of the deep survey, with a limiting flux of 10−14 erg cm−2s−1 (0.5–2 keV).
Deep VLA radio maps at 20cm (and at 6cm in the deep survey area only) have been constructed to flux limits of 0.5 mJy on the deep survey field and 2mJy on the extended survey.
