Few retirees use reverse mortgages. In this paper, we investigate how financial literacy and prior knowledge of the product influence take-up by conducting a stated-preference experiment. We exogenously manipulate characteristics of reverse mortgages to tease out how consumers value them and investigate differences by financial literacy and prior knowledge of reverse mortgages. We find that those with higher financial knowledge are more likely to know about reverse mortgages, not more likely to purchase them at any cost but are more sensitive to the interest rate and the insurance value of these products in terms of the non-negative equity guarantee.

In this paper, we draw on internationally comparable survey evidence on financial literacy and retirement planning in Canada to investigate how financially literate Canadians are and how financial literacy is linked to retirement planning. We find that 42% of respondents are able to correctly answer three simple questions measuring knowledge of interest compounding, inflation, and risk diversification. This is consistent with evidence from other countries, and Canadians perform relatively well in comparison with Americans but worse than individuals in other countries, such as Germany. Among Canadian respondents, the young and the old, women, minorities, and those with lower educational attainment do worse, a pattern that has been consistently found in other countries as well. Retirement planning is strongly associated with financial literacy; those who responded correctly to all three financial literacy questions are 10 percentage points more likely to have retirement savings.

Acquiring and processing phase-contrast microscopy images in wide-field long-term live-cell imaging and high-throughput screening applications is still a challenge as the methodology and algorithms used must be fast, simple to use and tune, and as minimally intrusive as possible. In this paper, we developed a simple and fast algorithm to compute the cell-covered surface (degree of confluence) in phase-contrast microscopy images. This segmentation algorithm is based on a range filter of a specified size, a minimum range threshold, and a minimum object size threshold. These parameters were adjusted in order to maximize the F-measure function on a calibration set of 200 hand-segmented images, and its performance was compared with other algorithms proposed in the literature. A set of one million images from 37 myoblast cell cultures under different conditions were processed to obtain their cell-covered surface against time. The data were used to fit exponential and logistic models, and the analysis showed a linear relationship between the kinetic parameters and passage number and highlighted the effect of culture medium quality on cell growth kinetics. This algorithm could be used for real-time monitoring of cell cultures and for high-throughput screening experiments upon adequate tuning.

Objective
To assess whether Swiss residents aged 15–24 years follow current nutritional guidelines and whether differences exist according to gender and weight status.
DesignCross-sectional national survey.
SettingSwitzerland.
SubjectsThe 1786 participants (48·4 % women) were divided into overweight, normal weight and underweight. We used traditional BMI cut-offs for people ≥18 years of age (underweight = BMI < 18·5 kg/m2, normal weight = BMI ≥ 18·5 kg/m2 and <25 kg/m2, overweight = BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) and age- and gender-appropriate tables for people aged <18 years, with BMI calculated from self-reported weight and height. We performed bivariate analyses by gender, and then bivariate and multivariate analyses comparing overweight to normal weight people (excluding underweight, n 129, 71·6 % women) regarding adherence to recommendations for fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and dairy products; physical activity; attitude towards body weight; depression, smoking and alcohol consumption.
ResultsOverall, adherence to nutritional guidelines was low, particularly for vegetables and dairy products. Women had a higher adherence than men except for fish and dairy products. In the multivariate analyses, overweight women had a lower vegetable intake, were less satisfied with body weight and had more often been on a diet, whereas overweight men were less satisfied with body weight and wanted to lose weight more often than their normal weight peers. There were no significant differences for physical activity.
ConclusionsOverweight prevention programmes should target youth specifically by gender and promote an appropriate self-perception. Overweight women should be encouraged to eat more vegetables and men to be more sensitised on healthy food. Further research is needed to assess how to make nutritional guidelines more adaptable to young people’s daily life.

Summary
Summary
The Small Pelagic Fish and Climate Change (SPACC) program was created to facilitate research on the dynamics of populations of small pelagic fish, including anchovy and sardine. These populations exhibit large variations in size, extent, and production on the scale of decades. At times, anchovy and sardine alternate in abundance. Collectively, small pelagic fish often occupy a central role in the food web they occur in, often described as a wasp-waist ecosystem. Humans are an integral part of those ecosystems. Variability of populations of small pelagic fish is believed to be due primarily to variations in climate and fishing, but the mechanisms of these relations remain unknown in most cases. It is also uncertain whether these ecosystems alternate between states, e.g. regimes, and whether inherent variability may limit our ability to predict their future states. The fisheries for populations of small pelagic fish are increasingly global in nature. While the global catch of small pelagic fish constitutes approximately one quarter of the world fish catch and has been relatively constant during the past several decades, the catch of individual taxa and stocks varies much more. The management of these fisheries will be challenged by increasing demand for human consumption and mariculture in light of their finite and variable production, importance within the ecosystem, and unprecedented climate change, and will depend on both science and governance. We recommend continued, global research on climate change effects on small pelagic fish, and its periodic assessment for use by decision makers.

The mechanisms of heat and mass transport in a side-heated square cavity filled with a near-critical fluid are explored, with special emphasis on the interplay between buoyancy-driven convection and the Piston Effect. The Navier–Stokes equations for a near-critical van der Waals gas are solved numerically by means of an acoustically filtered, finite-volume method. The results have revealed some striking behaviour compared with that obtained for normally compressible gases: (i) heat equilibration is still achieved rapidly, as under zero-g conditions, by the Piston Effect before convection has time to enhance heat transport; (ii) mass equilibration is achieved on a much longer time scale by quasi-isothermal buoyant convection; (iii) due to the very high compressibility, a stagnation-point effect similar to that encountered in high-speed flows provokes an overheating of the upper wall; and (iv) a significant difference to the convective single-roll pattern generated under the same conditions in normal CO2 is found, in the form of a double-roll convective structure.

Air permeability was determined for concretes of variable porosity (w/c ratio of 0.33, 0.50, and 0.67). The reproducibility of the test and the ability to characterize the permeability of different concrete were evaluated. Results indicate that air permeability test gives suitable reproducibility with a margin of error of 10%, which tends to improve with increase in w/c ratio. The difference in air permeability of concretes with the w/c ratios investigated are distinguishable by this technique. Furthermore air permeability coefficients used were modified with equations derived in accordance to Darcy's law, and the resulting air permeabilities compared. Data calculated with an air permeability coefficient based on mean radius pore (corrected equation) appears to give a more realistic value with greater differentiation between the ranges. Values were determined on specimens after 28 days, maintained at room temperature (50% RH), then again after an additional 2 days at 60°C in a ventilated oven. Oven-dried specimens exhibit significantly greater air permeability.

A silico-aluminous (Class F) French fly ash has been studied during the last ten years. While over this period the fly ash was produced from different bituminous coals, it has demonstrated high constancy in terms of its chemical and physical composition as well as cementitious properties. The first part of this paper gives a complete physico-chemical characterization of this fly ash, including chemical composition, mineralogical composition of its crystallized fraction, chemical composition of its glass, grain-size distribution, specific surface area, and bulk density. The second part deals with physico-chemical experiments performed to determine the cementitious components of this fly ash through its dissolution in pure water and in lime water. The lime water experiment was also carried out on a washed sample containing few residual sulfates. This series of experiments demonstrates the importance of sulfates in this particular fly ash, especially during the early stages of hydration. Their action results in the formation of ettringite. The cementitious role of these sulfates has been confirmed by comparing the compressive strength of mortar cubes containing washed and nonwashed fly ash. After 7 days, mortar cubes made with this fly ash showed a slight compressive strength increase when compared to a reference mix containing the same amount of quartz. This compressive strength increase can be related to the formation of C-S-H due to the pozzolanic reaction. After 8 months, the pozzolanic reaction had consumed most of the lime generated by the hydration of C2S and C3S, so that practically no portlandite remained in the mortar.
