We have mapped the southern galaxies NGC 613, 1313, 1433, 1566, 1672 and 2442 in the 12CO(J = 1 → 0) transition with the 15-m Swedish European Submillimetre Telescope (SEST). The sample is based on galaxies previously observed in radio continuum with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST). Strong emission is seen from the barred galaxies NGC 613 and NGC 2442 and from the active galaxies NGC 1566 and 1672. The weakest emission was from NGC 1433, while the Sd spiral NGC 1313 was not detected.

Normal and tangential velocities in the boundary layer and out into the free stream have been obtained using a non-disturbing flow visualization technique for uniform laminar flow around a sphere. The non-similar data are available in tables at 2.5° intervals from 20° from the front to about 15° past the separation point a t Reynolds numbers of 290, 750, 1300 and 3000. Stream functions calculated by LeClair using a numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equation at Re 21 300 are not in good agreement with measured values from 30° to 60°, but are in much better agreement around the separation point. Too few grid points near the sphere where the tangential velocities rise to a maximum above free-stream values may account for the difference.

Magnetic properties of photoluminescing spark-processed silicon (sp-Si) have been investigated for the first time. Contrary to the diamagnetic signal known for bulk silicon, sp-Si displays a paramagnetic resonance as well as a ferromagnetic hysterisis loop. The paramagnetic resonance was studied using an EPR system and showed a high concentration of at least two distinct paramagnetic centers. One center can be eliminated by annealing in Ultra-High Purity nitrogen for 30 minutes at 600 °C. Measurements utilizing a SQUID magnetometer revealed that sp-Si displays ferromagnetic ordering with a saturization magnetization occuring at low fields. This is attributed to the high density of paramagnetic centers. Temperature dependent measurements were performed to establish possible links between magnetic properties and the luminescence of sp-Si.

Spark-processing has been shown recently to generate a silicon-based substance which intensely photoluminesces in the UV/blue or green spectral range, depending on whether the preparation was performed in flowing or stagnant air, respectively. This study reports about significant differences for the radiative properties of spark-processed silicon after preparations in oxygen, nitrogen, and mixtures of both gases. Whereas there is essentially no photoluminescence (PL) after processing in pure nitrogen, an orange PL band at 1.89 eV occurs after preparation in pure oxygen. The orange PL degrades with time and when exposed to laser light. Furthermore, it switches immediately to a more intense blue emission centered at 2.61 eV when the sample is subjected to lower gas pressures. A similar 2.6 eV PL is observed after heat treatments up to 350°C. If, however, spark-processing of Si is carried out in nitrogen and oxygen is added, a green PL arises, centered at 2.35 eV. Moreover, for a volume ratio of about 1:1 N2/O2 a PL band at 3.22 eV emerges, superimposing the green emission. Both bands are about two orders of magnitude more intense than the orange PL, when prepared under otherwise identical processing conditions.

Transparent, nanophase-separated, inorganic-organic hybrid polymers with dielectric constants below 3.0 have been prepared from reactively functionalized poly(amic ester) derivatives and substituted, oligomeric silsesquioxanes. These hybrid materials are stable to 400 °C and above and form tough, crack-free films. Induced cracking and crack propagation studies performed with the application of external stress suggest a maximum critical film thickness of at least 2.0 μm under severe stress conditions. These hybrid materials appear to be significantly toughened by the chemical incorporation of the polyimides relative to organically modified silicates and spin-on-glasses without significantly effecting other important polymer properties of the silicates.

Electrical resistance data were gathered from AI(Cu) VLSI metallization test structures during pulsed DC current stressing (15 mA peak) at elevated temperature (200 °C). Duty cycles of 50%, 67%, and 80% were applied at a frequency (repetition rate) of 133 MHz. Also, a duty cycle of 50% was applied at frequencies of 100 KHz, I MHz, and 133 MHz. The resistance-to-starting resistance ratio, R/Ro, was logged over time, and the data were used to extract the median time dependence of the resistance change. This, in effect, reveals the dependence of the median “failure” time on the R/Ro (or ΔR/Ro) criterion. An “enhancement factor” was defined as the ratio of the median “failure” time from a given pulsed test to that from a DC test with the same peak current. A weak dependence of this enhancement factor on R/Ro was found in the range examined. The degree of enhancement corresponds more closely to the average current density prediction than to the on-time prediction, although there is some small variation according to duty cycle and frequency.

Since 1982, we are performing a long-term spectroscopic observing programme of emission-lines in Be stars (Hanuschik 1987, Hanuschik et al. 1988, Dachs et al. 1992, Sutorius 1992, Dietle 1993). We are using ESO's 1.4m CAT, at resolution R ≥ 50 000 and S/N = 100–1000. Spectral lines chosen are the optically thick Hα, Hβ lines and the optically thin Fe ii λ5317 line. The latter line is an extremely sharp tracer (Δvth = 2 km s−1) for the kinematics in the disks. We believe that our atlas shows the full range of intrinsic structure of these emission lines.

The effects of energetic Ar cluster ion impacts on Si(111) surfaces have been studied for cluster energies up to l5keV. The mean cluster size was about 1000 atoms, and the smaller sizes could be systematically excluded. Si samples irradiated at different cluster ion energies were analyzed by RBS, ellipsometry, and differential reflectometry. Implantation of Ar in samples irradiated with cluster ions was found by RBS to be detectable, but very small in comparison with samples irradiated with monomer ions of the same energy. The thickness of the damage layer as measured by both ellipsometry and differential reflectometry was also much smaller in the cluster ion irradiated samples.

Differential reflection (DR) spectrometry has been used to investigate and characterize the effect of sputter damage of GaAs by Ar+ ions. The DR technique provides the photon-induced critical point interband transition energies which are sensitive to the electron and the crystal structure. The spectral dependence of the normalized difference in reflectivity is obtained by periodically scanning monochromatic light across a pair of GaAs samples. In the present case one part has been damaged by Ar+ ions with energies ranging from 500 to 5000 eV. The other half is the undamaged reference. The DR structure caused by interband transitions and designated as E1 and E1 + δ1 were found to shift in energy with increasing ion beam energy or with sputter damage. Two annealing stages were observed, one at 200°C and the other between 400°C and 450°C. They were attributed to different recovering mechanisms of As Frenkel pairs.

Porous silicon which has been prepared by a “dry” technique, that is, by spark erosion, yields similar photoluminescence spectra as anodically etched porous silicon which has been prepared in aqueous solutions. Fourier transform infrared spectra reveal that the dominant features in spark eroded silicon are the Si-O-Si stretching mode and the Si-O-Si bending mode. No infrared vibrational modes characteristic for siloxene have been found in spark eroded Si. Results from X-ray and electron diffraction studies suggest that spark eroded Si involves minute polycrystalline silicon particles which are imbedded in an amorphous matrix.

The electromigration resistance, the sub-micron contact area filling capability, the crystal structure, the preferred orientation, and the CMOS device characteristics of self-ion-enhanced physical vapor deposited aluminum metallizations have been studied. It has been found that optimal conditions can be achieved by increasing the deposition rate and by applying some ionization and acceleration of the aluminum particles.

This study of the activity in the nuclei of normal galaxies began as an investigation into the spread in the observed properties of normal galaxies used as standard candles in measurements of departures from the Hubble flow (Hart & Davies 1982). Extensive studies of the integrated properties of normal galaxies show the influence on these properties of quiescent star formation and embedded starburst-type activity (Staveley-Smith & Davies, 1987,1988). Normal galaxies have a significant level of nuclear activity, although it is not strongly correlated with their integrated properties. This investigation of nuclear activity is based on a sample of the 100 brightest nearby Sbc galaxies, a sample unbiassed in its selection of activity.
