Summary
This chapter decouples queerness from whiteness, and modernism from its period origins, arguing that queer-of-color modernists like Nella Larsen, Richard Bruce Nugent, and Matthew Lopez transform the coordinates of queerness and modernism through their misfit intersections of identity, also extending the timeframe for modernist aesthetics through a queer genealogy that extends backwards (as in Lopez’s The Inheritance, which features E.M. Forster) and forwards (as in Larsen’s Passing and its intersectional queer subtext, cinematically adapted by Rebecca Hall in 2021).

Summary
Rebecca Hall’s 2021 film adaptation of Nella Larsen’s famed Harlem Renaissance novel, Passing (1929), indexes the relevance of interracial passing today. We explore Hall’s film to explain the contemporary appeal of Larsen’s narrative. Larsen’s Passing licenses interpretive possibilities that transcend its immediate moment, even as it seeks to criticize specific historical realities of modern intersectional identity. Hall’s neo-passing narrative of 1920s Black femininity employs cinema to highlight the enduring immobility of the color line and the erotic and social risk of crossing it.
We assess Hall’s adaptation of the two-protagonist structure as it personalizes Larsen’s depiction of racial liminality; consider Hall’s use of cinematography to adapt Larsen’s rhetorical sleight of hand regarding US racial discourses; and discuss the homoerotics of passing in both works. We then contemplate Hall’s casting choices. The final section takes up the conclusion of the two works. Hall resolves some of Larsen’s famous ambiguity, but poignantly showcases the essential instability of the gendered, racialized body in US literature and culture across a century.

Two major trends on children’s skills to comprehend metaphors have governed the literature on the subject: the literal stage hypothesis vs. the early birds hypothesis (Falkum, 2022). We aim to contribute to this debate by testing children’s capability to comprehend novel metaphors (‘X is a Y’) in Spanish with a child-friendly, picture selection task, while also tracking their gaze. Further, given recent findings on the development of metonymy comprehension suggesting a U-shaped developmental curve for this phenomenon (Köder & Falkum, 2020), we aimed to determine the shape of the developmental trajectory of novel metaphor comprehension, and to explore how both types of data (picture selection and gaze behavior) relate to each other. Our results suggest a linear developmental trajectory with 6-year-olds significantly succeeding in picture selection and consistently looking at the metaphorical target even after question onset.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Antibiotic treatment sets the stage for intestinal domination by Candida albicanswhich is necessary for development of invasive disease, but the resources driving this bloom remain poorly defined. We sought to determine these factors in order to design novel prophylaxis strategies for reducing gastrointestinal (GI) colonization. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: We initially developed a generalizable framework, termed metabolic footprinting to determine the metabolites C. albicanspreferentially uses in the mouse GI tract. After identifying the metabolites C. albicansutilizes, we usedin vitro growth assays in the presence and absence of oxygen to validate out metabolomics findings. We next determined if a probiotic E. coli that utilizes oxygen would reduce C. albicanscolonization compared to a mutant E. coli that could not respire oxygen. Finding that oxygen was a necessary resource, we utilized germ-free mice to determine if Clostridiaspp. known to reduce GI oxygen would prevent C. albicanscolonization. Lastly, we sought to see if 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) could prevent C. albicanscolonization. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: We found that C. albicans preferentially utilizes simple carbohydrates including fructo-oligosaccharides (e.g., 1-kestose), disaccharides (e.g., β-gentiobiose), and alcoholic sugars (e.g., sorbitol) and is able to grow in vitro on minimal media supplemented with either of these nutrients. However, in the hypoxic environment that is found in the “healthy” colon, C. albicans cannot utilize these nutrients. We next found that pre-colonization in a mouse model with a probiotic E. coli significantly reduced C. albicanscolonization, but the mutant E. coli had no effect on colonization. We next showed that Clostridia supplementation restored GI hypoxia and reduced C. albicanscolonization. Remarkably, we found that 5-ASA significantly reduced GI colonization of C. albicans. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: We have shown that C. albicans requires oxygen to colonize the GI tract. Importantly, we found that 5-ASA can prevent an antibiotic mediated bloom of C. albicans by restoring GI hypoxia, which warrants additional studies to determine if 5-ASA can be used as an adjunctive prophylactic treatment in high risk patients.
Cacoxenite in Miocene Sediments of the Maryland Coastal Plain

Cacoxenite having the composition (Al4.0Fe22.5O7.1(OH)14.3(PO4)17(H2O)23.7)·50.3H2O was identified in a bed of mature quartz sand in the Miocene Calvert Formation near Popes Creek, Maryland. This is the first reported occurrence of this mineral in Atlantic Coastal Plain sediments north of Florida. The cacoxenite occurs as silt-size to sand-size grains, both as irregularly shaped aggregates and as radiating arrays of delicate acicular crystals. The presence of discrete cores and overgrowths in some grains indicates at least two generations of crystal growth. Electron microprobe analyses reveal excess Si and Al (relative to the ideal composition), which is believed to reflect ultra-fine clay particles within the cacoxenite grains. Admixed clays probably served as a substrate for the formation of ferric oxyhydroxides, which were subsequently converted to cacoxenite through the addition of dissolved phosphorus.

A sequence of interstratified illite-smectite (I-S) and illite in Paleozoic pelites and metapelites from the Iberian Range, Spain, was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The fine-grained matrix of diagenetic pelites is composed of I-S with sequences of illite- and smectite-like layers in a given sample. The Reichweite (R) values as determined by XRD and averaged over heterogenous I-S layer sequences increase with increasing grade, apparently continuously, in sharp contrast with TEM observations of other published sequences. Changes in I-S sequences along layers are rarely observed. In the higher-grade diagenetic pelites, I-S coexists with illite. Each I-S phase has a composition similar to that of illite, implying unique Al-Si distributions in contrast to smectite and muscovite. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns of I-S and illite are diagnostic of 1Md polytypism. Anchizonal metapelites consist of larger packets of well-crystallized muscovite, with SAED patterns corresponding to a two-layer polytype.
The continuous sequence of changes studied by TEM in I-S sequences and lateral transitions among these units is consistent with illitization by layer-by-layer replacement, although other processes are possible also. Replacement of individual layers probably occurs via fluids at reaction interfaces, in contrast to solid-state reactions, sensu strictu. The transition from the diagenetic to anchizonal rocks (transition in textures and formation of muscovite-2M1) occurred via dissolution/crystallization, however, presumably by tectonic stress. XRD and TEM data imply a consistent prograde trend in the sequence, the XRD data denning the average, long-range Reichweite ordering sequence, whereas the TEM data define the short-range layer sequences.
Phase-Transition Process in the Hydrothermal Zeolitization of Volcanic Ash into LTA and FAU Structures

Minerals such as quartz, present widely in various volcanic ashes, remain unaltered throughout the low-temperature hydrothermal process currently used in industry to obtain zeolites, causing an incomplete hydrothermal transformation of the starting solid. This study presents a novel and cost-effective procedure which improves the reactivity of ash toward the generation of zeolite by increasing the availability of silica and alumina components. This method leads to a final product with a large zeolite content. The transformation consisted of an ash-activation step followed by hydrothermal zeolitization. The influence of the structural, chemical, and morphological characteristics of the volcanic ash as well as the effect of the activation procedure on the ash reactivity were studied. A collected sample (VA) and an amorphous fraction obtained after VA sieving (VA40, retained on #40 mesh) were used for zeolite production. These solids were alkaline-treated separately, aged, and reacted under controlled conditions of temperature at autogenous pressure. Throughout the process, the solid phases were characterized by X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and N2adsorption-desorption porosimetry measurements. After activation and alkaline aging, the presence of quartz and plagioclase minerals in the natural ash seemed to improve the growth of NaAlSiO4 polymorphs, which in turn were transformed easily to zeolite structures. Even under adequate pretreatment and suitable synthesis conditions, the coarse non-crystalline fraction led to low conversion, while the highest conversions to zeolites A and X were obtained from the natural ash. The outcomes of the present study could be used to improve the conversion levels of other non-conventional aluminosiliceous minerals into zeolites.

Objective:
Existing research has demonstrated that neuropsychiatric/behavioral-psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) frequently contribute to worse prognosis in patients with neurodegenerative conditions (e.g., increased functional dependence, worse quality of life, greater caregiver burden, faster disease progression). BPSD are most commonly measured via the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), or its briefer, informant-rated questionnaire (NPI-Q). Despite the NPI-Q’s common use in research and practice, there is disarray in the literature concerning the NPI-Q’s latent structure and reliability, possibly related to differences in methods between studies. Also, hierarchical factor models have not been considered, even though such models are gaining favor in the psychopathology literature. Therefore, we aimed to compare different factor structures from the current literature using confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) to help determine the best latent model of the NPI-Q.
Participants and Methods:This sample included 20,500 individuals (57% female; 80% White, 12% Black, 8% Hispanic), with a mean age of 71 (SD = 10.41) and 15 average years of education (SD = 3.43). Individuals were included if they had completed an NPI-Q during their first visit at one of 33 Alzheimer Disease Research Centers reporting to the National Alzheimer Coordinating Center (NACC). All CFA and reliability analyses were performed with lavaan and semTools R packages, using a diagonally weighted least squares (DWLS) estimator. Eight single-level models using full or modified versions of the NPI-Q were compared, and the top three were later tested in bifactor form.
Results:CFAs revealed all factor models of the full NPI-Q demonstrated goodness of fit across multiple indices (SRMR = 0.039-0.052, RMSEA = 0.025-0.029, CFI = 0.973-0.983, TLI = 0.9670.977). Modified forms of the NPI-Q also demonstrated goodness of fit across multiple indices (SRMR = 0.025-0.052, RMSEA = 0.0180.031, CFI = 0.976-0.993, TLI = 0.968-0.989). Top factor models later tested in bifactor form all demonstrated consistently stronger goodness of fit regardless of whether they were a full form (SRMR = 0.023-0.035, RMSEA = 0.015-0.02, CFI = 0.992-0.995, TLI = 0.985-0.991) or a modified form (SRMR = 0.023-0.042, RMSEA = 0.015-0.024, CFI = 0.985-0.995, TLI = 0.9770.992). Siafarikas and colleagues’ (2018) 3-factor model demonstrated the best fit among the full-form models, whereas Sayegh and Knight’s (2014) 4-factor model had the best fit among all single-level models, as well as among the bifactor models.
Conclusions:Although all factor models had adequate goodness of fit, the Sayegh & Knight 4-factor model had the strongest fit among both single-level and bifactor models. Furthermore, all bifactor models had consistently stronger fit than single-level models, suggesting that BPSD are best theoretically explained by a hierarchical, non-nested framework of general and specific contributors to symptoms. These findings also inform consistent use of NPI-Q subscales.
10 Performance between bilinguals and monolinguals: Anxiety as a moderating effect across executive functioning and processing speed in a multicultural cohort with ADHD symptoms

Objective:
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder commonly associated with relative impairments on processing speed, working memory, and/or executive functioning. Anxiety commonly co-occurs with ADHD and may also adversely affect these cognitive functions. Additionally, language status (i.e., monolingualism vs bilingualism) has been shown to affect select cognitive domains across an individual’s lifespan. Yet, few studies have examined the potential effects of the interaction between anxiety and language status on various cognitive domains among people with ADHD. Thus, the current study investigated the effects of the interaction of anxiety and language status on processing speed, working memory, and executive functioning among monolingual and bilingual individuals with ADHD.
Participants and Methods:The sample comprised of 407 consecutive adult patients diagnosed with ADHD. When asked about their language status, 67% reported to be monolingual (English). The Mean age of individuals was 27.93 (SD = 6.83), mean education of 15.8 years (SD = 2.10), 60% female, racially diverse with 49% Non-Hispanic White, 22% Non-Hispanic Black, 13% Hispanic/Latinx, 9% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 6% other race/ethnicity. Processing speed, working memory, and executive function were measured via the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition Processing Speed Index, Working Memory Index, and Trail Making Test B, respectively. Anxiety was measured via the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Three separate linear regression models examined the interaction between anxiety (moderator) and cognition (processing speed, working memory, and executive function) on language. Models included sex/gender and education as covariates with Processing Speed Index and Working Memory Index as the outcomes. Age, sex/gender, and education were used as covariates when Trail Making Test B was the outcome.
Results:Monolingual and bilingual patients differed in mean age (p < .05) but did not differ in level of anxiety, education, or sex/gender. Overall, anxiety was not associated with processing speed, working memory, and executive function. However, the interaction between anxiety and language status was significantly associated with processing speed (ß = -0.37, p < .05), and executive functioning (ß = 0.82, p < .05). No associations were found when anxiety was added as a moderator for the associations between language and working memory.
Conclusions:This study found that anxiety moderated the relationship between language status and select cognitive domains (i.e., processing speed and executive functioning) among individuals with ADHD. Specifically, anxiety had a greater association on processing speed and executive functioning performance for bilinguals rather than monolinguals. Future detailed studies are needed to better understand how anxiety modifies the relationship between language and cognitive performance outcomes over time amongst a linguistically diverse sample.

Objective:
Neuropsychiatric/behavioral-psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) frequently contribute to worse prognosis of patients with neurodegenerative conditions. BPSD are commonly measured via a brief, informant-rated version of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), the NPI-Q. Previously (see our other submission to this conference), we established optimal latent structures by comparing different factor models in the literature using confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs). However, questions remain as to why so many different models were found in the literature. One possibility is sampling differences, including different proportions of individuals across cognitive stages (e.g., mild cognitive impairment, moderate dementia) or syndromes (e.g., Alzheimer’s amnestic syndrome, Dementia with Lewy Bodies). We tested this hypothesis by subjecting candidate models to measurement invariance (MI) analyses stratified by cognitive stage and syndrome.
Participants and Methods:Individuals were included if they had completed an NPI-Q during their first visit at an Alzheimer Disease Research Center reporting to the National Alzheimer Coordinating Center (NACC). This resulted in 20,500 individuals (57% female; 80% White, 13% Black, 8% Hispanic), with a mean age of 71 (SD = 10.41) and 15 average years of education (SD = 3.43). Regarding staging, 75.9% of individuals did not meet criteria for all-cause dementia, whereas 24.1% individuals had all-cause dementia. Regarding syndromes, 35.6% had an Alzheimer’s presentation (“AD-type”) and 5.6% had either a behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia or Lewy-Body dementia presentation (“behavioral-type”). A 3-factor and 4-factor model were subject to MI across these groupings. We conducted MI analyses for equal forms, equal loadings, and equal intercepts using the lavaan R package with a diagonally weighted least squares (DWLS) estimator.
Results:The 3-factor model demonstrated good fit among individuals experiencing (CFI = 0.965, TLI = 0.955) and not experiencing (CFI = 0.984, TLI = 0.979) dementia, as well as among AD-type (CFI = 0.983, TLI = 0.978) presentations, but had borderline poor fit for behavioral-type (CFI = 0.932, TLI = 0.912) presentations. The 4-factor model had better fit among those experiencing (CFI = 0.985, TLI = 0.977) and not experiencing (CFI = 0.995, TLI = 0.992) dementia. Additionally, the 4-factor model demonstrated good of fit for AD-type (CFI = 0.993, TLI = 0.989) and poorer fit for behavioral-type (CFI = 0.949, TLI = 0.922) syndromes. Chi-square differences suggested that equal loading and equal intercept hypotheses should be rejected for both 3- and 4-factor models, for both staging and syndromal groupings. However, relative fit indices suggested that the equal form, equal loading, and equal intercept hypotheses could be adequate for only the 4-factor model.
Conclusions:The variability of factor structures in the BPSD literature appears, at least partially, explained by sampling variability among cognitive stages and dementia syndromes. The best models in the literature appear to have good fit in non-demented individuals and, among those who have dementia, in those with an AD syndrome. Only Sayegh & Knight’s 4-factor model had adequate (albeit, not optimal) fit among those with all-cause dementia and, more specifically, among those with a behavioral-type dementia syndrome. These findings inform BPSD theory and practical implementation of NPI-Q subscales.
12 The Effect of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form Symptom Reporting Among Adult Neuropsychological Referrals

Objective:
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is a broad construct that refers to negative events one may experience during childhood, including, but not limited to, childhood maltreatment, household dysfunction, and trauma. ACEs have consistently shown to be associated with negative physical and mental health outcomes. Although researchers have investigated the effects of trauma and abuse on personality measures, few studies have examined differences between those with high ACEs, low ACEs, and no ACEs on measures of personality in the context of neuropsychological evaluations.
Participants and Methods:The current study included 128 consecutive adult patients referred for outpatient neuropsychological evaluation of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The sample was 39.8% non-Hispanic White, 21.9% non-Hispanic Black, 16.4% Hispanic, 10.9% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 10.9% other race/ethnicity, with a mean age of 27.9 years (SD=6.3) and mean education of 16.1 years (SD=2.2). Multivariate analyses of variance were performed to evaluate differences on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) between individuals who experienced high levels of ACEs (>4/10 on the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire), low levels of ACEs (1-3/10), and no ACEs (0/10).
Results:When analyzing Higher-Order (H-O) scales, there was a significant group difference in mean elevation on the Behavioral/Externalizing Dysfunction (BXD) scale, F(2,113)=3.124, p < .05, such that individuals in the high ACEs group evidenced higher scores than those in the low ACEs group (p < .05). Additionally, there were significant differences on several Restructured Clinical (RC) scales. Specifically, there were group differences on the Low Positive Emotions (RC2) scale, F(2,113)=3.427, p < .05, such that those in the low ACEs group evidenced higher scores than those in the no ACEs group (p < .05). The Antisocial Behavior (RC4) scale also had significant differences, F(2,113)=13.703, p < .001, such that those in the high ACEs group had higher scores than those in the low and no ACEs groups (p < .001). Finally, the Ideas of Persecution (RC6) scale yielded significant group differences, F(2,113)=4.793, p < .05, such that those in the high ACEs group evidenced higher scores than those in the low and no ACEs groups (p < .05).
Conclusions:In sum, this study demonstrated that ACEs, particularly high levels of ACEs, are related to higher difficulties with problems with under-controlled and rule-breaking behaviors, low positive emotional responses, and beliefs that others pose a threat. As such, assessment of ACEs may serve an important role in characterizing patients’ psychological status as part of a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation.
3 Harmonized Memory and Language Function in the Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) Across the United States and Mexico

Objective:
Cross-national neuropsychological research is needed to understand the social, economic, and cultural factors associated with cognitive risk and resilience across global aging populations. Memory and language have been shown to be sensitive to age-related cognitive decline and pathological cognitive aging processes and may be more sensitive to subtle cognitive decline than measures of global cognitive function. Thus, we aimed to derive and validate harmonized cognitive domain scores for memory and language across population-based studies in the US and Mexico.
Participants and Methods:Data came from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) and the Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS) Ancillary Study on Cognitive Aging (Mex-Cog). We used confirmatory factor analysis methodology to create statistically co-calibrated cognitive domains of memory and language. We performed differential item functioning (DIF) analysis to evaluate measurement differences across studies, using a cultural neuropsychological approach to identify comparable items across studies (i.e., cross-study anchors). We evaluated harmonized scores by examining their relationship to age and education in each study.
Results:We included 3347 participants from the HRS-HCAP study [Mage=76.6(7.5), 60% female] and 2042 participants from the Mex-Cog study [Mage=68.1(9.0), 59% female]. Education was classified according to the International Standard Classification of Education in the following categories (HRS-HCAP and Mex-Cog, respectively): none or early childhood education: (0.7%; 50.5%), primary education (4.1%; 22.3%), lower secondary education (7.1%; 15.7%), upper secondary education (41.1%; 3.0%), and any college (47.1%; 8.5%). DIF analyses revealed that 5 out of the 7 memory items and 1 out of the 12 language items demonstrated statistical evidence of measurement differences across studies, meaning that these items measured each underlying cognitive construct differently across studies. After adjusting for DIF by not allowing the items with DIF to be cross-study anchors, harmonized memory and language scores showed generally the expected associations with age and education in each study. Increasing age was associated with lower memory (r=-0.40 in HRS-HCAP; r=-0.44 in Mex-Cog) and language (r=-0.31 in HRS-HCAP and r=-0.67 in Mex-Cog) scores. Increasing years of education was associated with better memory and language scores, with mean scores ranging from z=-0.86 and z=-0.29 among those with a primary education or lower to z=0.33 and z=0.90 among those with any college, for HRS-HCAP and Mex-Cog, respectively.
Conclusions:A cultural neuropsychology approach to statistical harmonization facilitates the generation of harmonized measures of cognitive functioning in cross-national studies. Future work can utilize these harmonized cognitive scores to investigate determinants of late-life cognitive decline and dementia in the US and Mexico.

Objective:
Individuals with chronic pain frequently report diminished cognitive functioning. Prior cross-sectional studies have demonstrated strong associations between chronic pain and neurocognitive impairment, most notably in memory, attention, processing speed, and executive functioning. However, there is a paucity of research evaluating visual learning and memory abilities in this population. Further, while current practice standards advocate for the use of performance validity tests (PVTs) to assess the credibility of neuropsychological test performance, they have infrequently been incorporated into studies examining chronic pain samples, despite a higher observed rate of noncredible performance in the literature. This study aimed to compare visual learning and memory performance between a mixed neuropsychiatric (MNP) group and a chronic pain group in a validity-controlled sample.
Participants and Methods:The study consisted of 371 adults referred for outpatient neuropsychological evaluation. Between groups, various PVTs were administered, which included, at minimum, one freestanding and four embedded PVTs. All patients were administered the Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised (BVMT-R) as part of a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation. Only patients classified as valid performers (<1 PVT fails; n=295) were included in the analyses (Pain: n=109; MNP: n=186). The overall sample was 69% female and racially diverse (22% non-Hispanic Black, 43% non-Hispanic White, 30% Hispanic, 3% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 2% other race/ethnicities), with a mean age of 46.8 (SD=14.8) and mean education of 13.7 years (SD=2.7). Independent samples t-tests were performed to investigate the differences in visual learning and memory abilities between the chronic pain and MNP groups.
Results:Chi-square analyses revealed significant differences between the pain and MNP groups on race, with more non-Hispanic White and Hispanic patients represented in the MNP group. There were also modest group differences in age and education. For the chronic pain group, patients scored lower on both BVMT-R Total T-Score (mean difference = 9.65T, p<.001) and BVMT Delayed Recall T-Score (mean difference = 8.97T, p<.001). The effect size was robust for both for Total T-Score (d = 0.682) and Delayed Recall T-Score (d = 0.632). In contrast, the difference in BVMT Recognition Discriminability was not statistically significant.
Conclusions:This study demonstrated significant differences in performance between mixed neuropsychiatric and chronic pain patients. Preliminary evidence indicated that chronic pain patients displayed lower visual mediated encoding and retrieval performance, although their recognition is comparable. Although the nature of this study was targeted toward visual learning and retrieval, it is likely that the known impact of chronic pain on attention, working memory, and processing speed accounts for this relationship. Future studies will benefit from further elucidating these potential mechanisms and better inform clinical decision-making and neuropsychological testing performance in patients with chronic pain.
4 HIV Status and Cannabis Use: A Rigorous Examination of Between Group Differences in Neurocognitive Functioning

Objective:
A recent review called for a more robust assessment of cannabis use (CU), including amount and timing of recent use to assess neurocognitive effects of CU among people living with HIV (PWH) (Ellis et al., 2021). The current study addresses some issues raised by investigating between group neurocognitive differences among healthy controls and PWH who differ on their cannabis use histories, using strict inclusion criteria, robust classification of CU, and administration of an established neurocognitive test battery.
Participants and Methods:Among this community sample of adults (N=309), 58 were classified as CU+/HIV+ group (84.5% Male), 76 as CU-/HIV+ (57.9% M), 86 as CU+/HIV- (58.1% M), and 89 as CU-/HIV- (53.9% M). Exclusion criteria included history of past 12-month dependence and extensive lifetime dependence or significant use of illicit substances other than cannabis, severe or current mood or thought disorder, and other medical conditions that adversely impact neurocognitive functioning. Inclusion criteria for CU+ groups included <30-days since last CU, >10 times of CU in last month, 3 times of CU per month in last 12 months, > 1 year of CU, and > 500 times used in lifetime. CU parameters did not statistically differ between HIV+/CU+ and HIV-/CU+. CU- groups’ inclusion criteria required no CU in last 6 months, 196 lifetime number of times used, and no history of CU dependance. Lifetime CU did not statistically differ between CU-/HIV+ and CU-/HIV- groups. HIV+ groups did not differ significantly on HIV viral load in plasma or nadir CD4+ counts. Significant between group differences included age, sex, years of education, and amount of alcohol and nicotine use within 12 months. The aforementioned sociodemographic and substance use variables that differed between groups were covariates in analyses. A battery of 10 neurocognitive measures, two measures per each domain of learning, memory, motor, executive functioning, and processing speed. Global composite summary scores for overall neurocognitive performance were calculated by averaging M T-scores for each neurocognitive domain. Data transformations were used to address any violations of statistical assumptions.
Results:To facilitate data reduction, neurocognitive task scores were standardized to T-scores using the M and SD of the CU-/HIV-group. An omnibus model of between-group comparisons on global neurocognitive task performance revealed no significant differences, F(3) = .16, p = .923. Subsequent Tukey’s post hoc test revealed no significant differences among the four groups. Results also revealed nonsignificant differences between groups in neurocognitive performance within each domain. However, the CU-/HIV- group performed significantly worse than the CU-/HIV+ group on the Executive Functioning domain, based on Tukey’s post hoc test.
Conclusions:We found no significant global neurocognitive differences among groups; however, there was some evidence for domain-specific neurocognitive differences in executive functioning. This contrasts somewhat with existing literature on HIV and cannabis-associated neurocognitive deficits. Several factors may have contributed to this, including our relatively healthy PWH sample. Future analyses will examine interactive effects of HIV severity and severity of CU on neurocognition. This analysis will better determine who, among PWH, are most at-risk for cannabis-associated neurocognitive effects and what factors may exacerbate them.

There are now 101 radiocarbon dates from the long Paleolithic and post-Paleolithic culture-stratigraphic sequence in El Mirón Cave, Cantabrian Spain. Here we report on two dates on bone from two different humans whose remains were found in disturbed surface sediments in the cave vestibule rear and that confirm the existence of burials in addition to previously reported residential occupations in the vestibule front pertaining to the Chalcolithic and early Bronze Age periods (ca. 5500–3500 cal BP). In another attempt to resolve problems of stratigraphic incoherence of dates from the early Magdalenian periods in the vestibule rear, six new assays on faunal remains from Levels 119, 117, 114, 108, and 106 were run at Queen’s University in Belfast. There continue to be date inversions in the Lower Magdalenian range of levels that may be explained by a combination of intensive anthropic and rodent activity, major rock fall, slope wash and gravity-caused object movements, as well as possible problems in following some thin levels during excavations over a large area and across many years of work in the cave vestibule interior, particularly in the absence of any layers that are culturally sterile or even poor. Nonetheless, the coherent age of the Initial Magdalenian is fully confirmed by a new date from Level 21 in the vestibule front at ca. 22,000–20,500 cal BP), as is the general age range of the Lower Magdalenian (ca. 20,500–18,000 cal BP).
Night-time/daytime Protein S100B serum levels in paranoid schizophrenic patients

Introduction
S100B is a calcium-binding astrocyte-specific cytokine, that is considered a biomarker of neurodegeneration; which may be involved in the imbalance of the inflammatory response observed in several brain disorders, including major depression and schizophrenia. Two meta-analyses have reported higher serum levels of S100B in patients with schizophrenia respect to healthy controls.
Different studies have described circadian and seasonal variations of biological variables, such as melatonin or cortisol. It has been reported that there is not circadian rhythm of S100B blood levels in healthy subjects. However, it is not known whether there are circadian oscillations in S100B blood concentrations in patients with schizophrenia.
ObjectivesThe aim of this study is to describe S100B serum levels in patients with schizophrenia and to analyse whether they follow a circadian rhythm.
MethodsOur sample consists in 47 patients in acute phase and stabilized status. Blood samples were collected at 12:00 and 00:00 hours by venipuncture. Serum levels of Protein S100B were measured three times: at admission, discharge and three months after discharge. Protein S100B was measured by means of ELISA (Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) techniques.

Control 0,97 There is a significance difference between 12:00 and 24:00 at admission for the Protein S100B.However, these difference did not occur at discharge and at three months after discharge.It can be interpreted as there is a circadian rhythm of Protein S100B when the patient has got a psychotic outbreak and disappears at discharge and when is psychopathologically stable.
ConclusionsWith respect to our results we can hypothesize that schizophrenic patients in acute relapse present circadian S100B rhythm that is not present when the patients are clinically stable.Furthermore, the decrease of serum protein S100B levels at discharge is indicative of a reduction of the cerebral inflammation, thus it can be a biomarker of cerebral inflammation and this reduction can be the effect of the treatment. Finally, its circadianity could be a guide of this process and clinical improvement.

Introduction
There are no conclusive findings about the possible protective role of religion on students’ mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, more research is needed.
ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between the level of emotional distress and religiosity among students from 7 different countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.
MethodsData were collected by an online cross-sectional survey that was distributed amongst Polish (N = 1196), Bengali (N = 1537), Indian (N = 483), Mexican (N = 231), Egyptian (N = 565), Philippine (N = 2062), and Pakistani (N = 506) students (N = 6642) from 12th April to 1st June 2021. The respondents were asked several questions regarding their religiosity which was measured by The Duke University Religion Index (DUREL), the emotional distress was measured by the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21).
ResultsEgypt with Islam as the dominant religion showed the greatest temple attendance (organizational religious activity: M=5.27±1.36) and spirituality (intrinsic religiosity: M=5.27±1.36), p<0.0001. On another hand, Egyptian students had the lowest emotional distress measured in all categories DASS-21 (depression: M=4.87±10.17, anxiety: M=4.78±10.13, stress: M=20.76±11.46). Two countries with the dominant Christian religion achieved the highest score for private religious activities (non-organizational religious activity; Mexico: M=3.94±0.94, Poland: M=3.63±1.20; p<0.0001) and experienced a moderate level of depressive symptoms, anxiety, and stress. Students from Mexico presented the lowest attendance to church (M=2.46±1,39) and spirituality (M=6.68± 3.41) and had the second highest level of depressive symptoms (M=19.13±13.03) and stress (M=20.27±1.98). Philippines students had the highest DASS-21 score (depression: M=22.77±12.58, anxiety: M=16.07±10.77, stress: M=4.87±10.08) and their level of religiosity reached average values in the whole group. The performed regression analysis confirmed the importance of the 3 dimensions (organizational religious activity, non-organizational religious activity, intrinsic religiosity) of religiosity for the well-being of students, except for the relationship between anxiety and private religious activities. The result was as presented for depression: R2=0.0398, F(3.664)=91.764, p<0.0001, SE of E: 12.88; anxiety: R2=0.0124, F(3.664)=27.683, p<0.0001, SE of E: 10,62; stress: R2= 0.0350, F(3.664)=80.363, p<0.0001, SE of E: 12.30.
ConclusionsThe higher commitment to organizational religious activity, non-organizational religious activity, and intrinsic religiositywas correlated with the lower level of depressive symptoms, stress, and anxiety among students during the COVID-19 pandemic, but taking into account factors related to religiosity explains the level of emotional well-being to a small extent.

Introduction
Psychotic disorders carry several economical, psychological and social consequences, both at individual and community levels. Early intervention programs after first-episode psychosis which combine pharmacological and psychosocial strategies are aimed at reducing symptoms, lowering costs in the use of health and non-health care resources and improving overall functioning. AGES-Mind study is based on manualized psychotherapeutic interventions for people with first-psychosis episodes.
ObjectivesThe aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of a group psychotherapeutic intervention on the clinical status and use of clinical resources in a sample of patients with first-episode psychosis at 12 and 24 months after the beginning of the intervention. This cohort will be compared to patients with first-psychosis episodes without group psychotherapeutic intervention.
MethodsLongitudinal, observational, retrospective study on a cohort of N=46 patients with first-episode psychosis within the last 5 years. Two groups of 23 patients each were formed. The participants of one of those groups received group psychotherapy in the context of the AGES-Mind study and the other group received treatment as usual without group intervention. Non-exposed patients were matched by age, gender and time elapsed since first-episode psychosis with those exposed to the intervention. Sociodemographic data, clinical status and use of clinical resources outcome variables were assessed.
ResultsNo significant differences were found in clinical status and use of resources between participants and non-participants in the psychotherapeutic group intervention after 12 and 24 months.
ConclusionsAfter controlling for potentially confounding variables as sociodemographic, age and time since first-episode, participating in a group psychotherapeutic program does not seem to improve clinical variables or use of resources. Further studies with larger samples would be necessary to explore other variables, such as symptoms, satisfaction with the intervention or social functioning.

Introduction
Early intervention on a first psychotic episode is fundamental for a more favorable prognosis, and it usually combines pharmacological treatment, which mainly affects positive psychotic symptoms, with interventions that can improve the rest of the symptoms and associated problems such as deterioration in social functioning (Harvey & Penn, 2010; Fusar-Poli, McGorry & Kane, 2017). While Mindfulness is gaining more and more prominence in the field of psychotherapy (Chan et al., 2019; Cillesen et al., 2019), social cognition and social functioning are being researched as key targets on which to intervene after a first psychotic episode (Green, Horan & Lee, 2015).
SocialMIND® is a mindfulness-based social cognition training tailor-made to improve social functioning in people who have suffered a first psychotic episode within the last five years. It is currently being compared with a group Psychoeducational Multicomponent Intervention (PMI) in a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) (Mediavilla et al., 2019). Both group psychotherapies include 17 sessions delivered over a 9 month period: 8 weekly sessions, 4 biweekly sessions and 5 monthly sessions.
The results of SocialMIND® at 8 weeks showed improvements in social cognition and social functioning, specifically on affective social cognition and self-care (Mediavilla et al., 2021).
ObjectivesTo evaluate the efficacy of SocialMIND® in improving social functioning, measured by the Personal and Social Functioning (PSP) scale 16 weeks after starting the intervention, in people who have suffered a first psychotic episode in the last 5 years.
MethodsRandomized, controlled pilot trial (use of a psychoeducational multicomponent intervention or PMI as active comparator) of two parallel groups (SocialMIND® and PMI) with a 1:1 ratio using a blind evaluator.
ResultsNo statistically significant differences were found in the social functioning variable between the two treatment arms. Intragroup differences are observed in other secondary variables studied (social cognition) 16 weeks after starting the interventions.
ConclusionsSocialMIND® has not been shown to be more effective than a PMI in improving social functioning at 16 weeks after starting the intervention in people who have suffered a first psychotic episode in the five years prior to being included in the study.
