There is a general consensus that providing care for a relative that has dementia is associated with negative outcomes for caregivers’ mental health. There seem to be also associations with negative physical health outcomes, although the literature on this topic is more scarce. Most of the available research consist in studies with a cross-sectional design. Longitudinal studies focused on psychosocial correlates of mental and physical health of the caregivers are lacking, mostly those analyzing the influence of factors such as behavioral and psychological symptoms of the dementia, caregivers` dysfunctional thoughts, and caregivers’ ambivalent and guilt feelings. The aim of this presentation will be to describe the findings from the Madrid Caregivers Longitudinal Study, that consist in a two year follow-up of family caregivers of people with dementia. Several models will be described testing the longitudinal effect of psychosocial variables on caregivers’ distress (depression and anxiety) and cardiovascular health (measured through biomarkers of inflammation). The practical implications of the findings will be discussed.

Background
This study investigates associations of several dimensions of childhood adversities (CAs) with lifetime mental disorders, 12-month disorder persistence, and impairment among incoming college students.
MethodsData come from the World Mental Health International College Student Initiative (WMH-ICS). Web-based surveys conducted in nine countries (n = 20 427) assessed lifetime and 12-month mental disorders, 12-month role impairment, and seven types of CAs occurring before the age of 18: parental psychopathology, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, neglect, bullying victimization, and dating violence. Poisson regressions estimated associations using three dimensions of CA exposure: type, number, and frequency.
ResultsOverall, 75.8% of students reported exposure to at least one CA. In multivariate regression models, lifetime onset and 12-month mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders were all associated with either the type, number, or frequency of CAs. In contrast, none of these associations was significant when predicting disorder persistence. Of the three CA dimensions examined, only frequency was associated with severe role impairment among students with 12-month disorders. Population-attributable risk simulations suggest that 18.7–57.5% of 12-month disorders and 16.3% of severe role impairment among those with disorders were associated with these CAs.
ConclusionCAs are associated with an elevated risk of onset and impairment among 12-month cases of diverse mental disorders but are not involved in disorder persistence. Future research on the associations of CAs with psychopathology should include fine-grained assessments of CA exposure and attempt to trace out modifiable intervention targets linked to mechanisms of associations with lifetime psychopathology and burden of 12-month mental disorders.

Summary
The interruption of animal movement by fragmentation is a major force with far-reaching ecological and conservation consequences. Understanding fragmentation processes underpins our ability to manage landscapes for connectivity, facilitating many ecological processes including gene flow interpopulation dynamics and demographic rescue. Here the current status of fragmentation, connectivity, methods, consequences, and management of the world’s eight bear species is reviewed. The metapopulation paradigm is also considered, i.e. are bears being forced into some form of functioning metapopulation or are they simply being fragmented into a series of isolated populations that, without conservation action, will likely be slowly extirpated, population by population?

We describe the development of a low-frequency airborne radar specifically designed for the sounding of temperate ice. The system operates at a central frequency of 1 MHz and consists of an impulse transmitter with an output voltage up to 5000 V and a digital receiver with a maximum gain of 80 dB. The radar was deployed on board a CASA 212 aircraft, which also carries a laser altimeter, an inertial navigation system, a digital camera and a GPS receiver. A description of the radar system is provided, as well as preliminary results obtained at Glaciar Tyndall, Campo de Hielo Sur (Southern Patagonia Icefield), where an ice depth of 670 m was reached.

BACKGROUND
Despite significant advances in technological methods for hand hygiene surveillance, a lack of evidence prohibits comparison of systems to one another or against the current gold standard of direct observation.
OBJECTIVETo validate a hand hygiene monitoring technology (HHMT) designed to capture hand hygiene behaviors aggregated at the hospital-unit level (GOJO Industries, Akron, OH).
METHODSOur team followed a rigorous validation approach to assess the sensitivity and positive predictive value (PPV) of an HHMT. A planned path was first used to measure the accuracy of the system when purposefully activated by investigators. Next, behavioral validation was used to quantify accuracy of the system in capturing real-world behaviors.
RESULTSDuring the planned path phase, investigators performed 4,872 unique events across 3 distinct hospital buildings varying in size and age since construction. Overall sensitivity across the medical center was 88.7% with a PPV of 99.2%. During the behavioral validation phase, trained direct observers recorded 5,539 unique events across 3 distinct hospital buildings. Overall sensitivity across the medical center was 92.7% and PPV was 84.4%.
CONCLUSIONObjective measures of sensitivity and PPV indicate the promise of the benefit of this and other HHMTs to capture basic behaviors associated with hand hygiene.

Effect systems have the potential to help software developers, but their practical adoption has been very limited. We conjecture that this limited adoption is due in part to the difficulty of transitioning from a system where effects are implicit and unrestricted to a system with a static effect discipline, which must settle for conservative checking in order to be decidable. To address this hindrance, we develop a theory of gradual effect checking, which makes it possible to incrementally annotate and statically check effects, while still rejecting statically inconsistent programs. We extend the generic type-and-effect framework of Marino and Millstein with a notion of unknown effects, which turns out to be significantly more subtle than unknown types in traditional gradual typing. We appeal to abstract interpretation to develop and validate the concepts of gradual effect checking. We also demonstrate how an effect system formulated in the framework of Marino and Millstein can be automatically extended to support gradual checking. We use gradual effect checking to develop a fully gradual type-and-effect framework, which permits interaction between static and dynamic checking for both effects and types.

A mid-sixteenth-century cemetery was investigated at the colonial Mixtec site of Teposcolula Yucundaa and is shown to be related to the cocoliztli pandemic of 1544–1550. This is the earliest colonial epidemic cemetery to be identified in Mexico. Through archaeogenetic and oxygen stable isotope analysis it is demonstrated that the interred individuals were local Mixtecs, and mortuary analysis sheds light on both Christian and traditional religious practices at the site. Mitochondrial haplogroup frequencies support long-term genetic continuity in the region, and carbon stable isotopes of bone collagen and enamel carbonates suggest no decrease in maize consumption during the early colonial period, despite historical evidence for a changing agricultural economy and increased wheat production at the site. The Teposcolula cemetery provides a rich and complex perspective on early colonial life in the Mixteca Alta and reaffirms the importance of archaeological and bioarchaeological evidence in investigating complex social and biological processes of the past.

Photometric searches for Be stars in environments with different metallicities have led to the discovery of many Be-like star variables. The knowledge of these types of variables is still fragmentary. This work presents the preliminary results of analyzing FLAMES+GIRAFFE spectra of a sample of these Be-like stars that we have found in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC).

This report presents the results to date of a three-year archaeological investigation of the Postclassic and early Spanish Colonial Mixtec City of Yucundaa, PuebloViejo de Teposcolula, Oaxaca. It is the first project in Oaxaca to focus specifically on a major prehispanic city and its dramatic transformation during the first three decades of the colonial period. Given the dearth of conventional historical documentation relating to Yucundaa, the site itself serves as a “primary text,” the major source of information regarding its development and operation. The project attempts to define the major components of the settlement, and to examine each as comprehensively as possible in order to form a coherent view of the city's structure and function. At the conclusion of the third season, the encouraging results serve to demonstrate the utility of a well-planned excavation program that from its inception attempts to examine an entire Postclassic-Colonial settlement and the great transformation occurring there between A.D. 1521 and 1550. The research methods, as well as information and insights derived from the project, will provide stimulus and a useful model for the study of other Mesoamerican urban settlements.

Many modern programming languages support basic generics, sufficient to implement type-safe polymorphic containers. Some languages have moved beyond this basic support, and in doing so have enabled a broader, more powerful form of generic programming. This paper reports on a comprehensive comparison of facilities for generic programming in eight programming languages: C++, Standard ML, Objective Caml, Haskell, Eiffel, Java, C# (with its proposed generics extension), and Cecil. By implementing a substantial example in each of these languages, we illustrate how the basic roles of generic programming can be represented in each language. We also identify eight language properties that support this broader view of generic programming: support for multi-type concepts, multiple constraints on type parameters, convenient associated type access, constraints on associated types, retroactive modeling, type aliases, separate compilation of algorithms and data structures, and implicit argument type deduction for generic algorithms. We find that these features are necessary to avoid awkward designs, poor maintainability, and painfully verbose code. As languages increasingly support generics, it is important that language designers understand the features necessary to enable the effective use of generics and that their absence can cause difficulties for programmers.

Of the numerous requirements for advanced VLSI silicon microelectronics, power dissipation per unit area, speed, packing density and radiation hardness are especially important. Power dissipation and speed have forced an evolutionary path from PMOS to NMOS to NMOS E/D and to the currently used CMOS. As evidenced by the large number of publications, CMOS on an insulating substrate is receiving increased attention due to its potential as the next generation in MOS evolution. We review results of our previous and current research in silicon on sapphire (SOS) which has led to high quality ultrathin SOS (<100 nm thick) appropriate for high density CMOS circuitry. Basic materials developments, device performance, and CMOS design considerations in 100 nm thick improved SOS will be discussed.
