Summary
During pregnancy, maternal anatomic changes present mechanical challenges to the musculoskeletal system. The enlarging gravid uterus alters the maternal body’s center of gravity, mechanically stressing the axial and pelvic systems, compounding the stresses brought about by the hormonal changes and fluid retention associated with pregnancy.

Many psychophysical studies of various visual tasks show that performance is generally better for binocular than for monocular observation. To investigate the physiological basis of this binocular advantage, we have recorded, under monocular and binocular stimulation, contrast response functions for single cells in the striate cortex of anesthetized and paralyzed cats. We applied receiver operating characteristic analysis to our data to obtain monocular and binocular neurometric functions for each cell. A contrast threshold and a slope were extracted from each neurometric function and were compared for monocular and binocular stimulation. We found that contrast thresholds and slopes varied from cell to cell but, in general, binocular contrast thresholds were lower, and binocular slopes were steeper, than their monocular counterparts. The binocular advantage ratio, the ratio of monocular to binocular thresholds for individual cells, was, on average, slightly higher than the typical ratios reported in human psychophysics. No single rule appeared to account for the various degrees of binocular summation seen in individual cells. We also found that the proportion of cells likely to contribute to contrast detection increased with stimulus contrast. Less contrast was required under binocular than under monocular stimulation to obtain the same proportion of cells that contribute to contrast detection. Based on these results, we suggest that behavioral contrast detection is carried out by a small proportion of cells that are relatively sensitive to near-threshold contrasts. Contrast sensitivity functions (CSFs) for the cell population, estimated from this hypothesis, agree well with behavioral data in both the shape of the CSF and the ratio of binocular to monocular sensitivities. We conclude that binocular summation in behavioral contrast detection may be attributed to the binocular superiority in contrast sensitivity of a small proportion of cells which are responsible for threshold contrast detection.

We report on light extraction experiments with polyfluorene based organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The intensity distribution of emission within the substrate and within air is determined experimentally. For the devices investigated in this study, we find that the external quantum efficiency can be increased by a factor of 1.82, in the case of complete suppression of waveguiding within the substrate. The experimental data is in good agreement with modeling results based on dipole emission within a multilayer system. As a consequence of these findings, we modified the device topology by introducing light extraction structures between glass substrate and indium tin oxide anode. This results in redirection of photon trajectories and thus in a higher probability to extract waveguided radiation. At a luminance of 100 cd/m2, the photometric efficiency for emission in forward direction is enhanced by a factor of 1.45 to 8.9 cd/A.

In Origen's discussion of the part played by the Logos in the creation of the world, In Ev. Joannis xix.5 (PG xiv. 568 b–c), there occurs a long sentence which is not altogether clear, chiefly because of the uncertainty of the punctuation. The text, as given by the four modern editors, Lommatzsch, Migne, Preuschen and Brooke, who agree throughout except in the two instances to be noted, is as follows (with punctuation after the biblical quotation omitted):

The expression ‘plain meaning’ is here used in the sense of Hebrew peshat, since this paper is not primarily a study in the higher criticism of Deutero-Isaiah. But I may perhaps be allowed to make three brief preliminary statements of belief concerning the relation of the passage under discussion to the rest of the book: First: that the conception of the Servant found in 42.1–4 is closer to that found in the whole of Deutero-Isaiah than it is to that in the last of the so-called Servant-poems, 52.13–53.12. Second: that the first Servant-poem describes the people of Israel, as do chs. 40–55 generally, and not an individual. Third: that the suffering of the Servant has been unduly emphasized from the early Christian period onward, largely because the sublime portrayal of humility and suffering in ch. 53, which is strikingly different from most of the book, has obscured the predominantly consolatory and triumphant aspects of the Servant as God's instrument. With this introduction I should like to comment on the Masoretic text.

Professor Torrey's new translation of the Gospels has more importance than a mere substantiation of a thesis might be expected to have. Whether or not his theory of a written Aramaic (and in part Hebrew) original of the four Gospels is correct, there can be no doubt of the value to New Testament scholarship of a critical translation made by so competent a Semitist and biblical student as the author is universally acknowledged to be. And lest this brief note of appreciation be taken as the conventional tribute paid by the disapproving critic before he attempts to show that the author's theories deserve less polite treatment, the reviewer wishes to make clear that he has studied the arguments for translation-Greek advanced in Torrey's essay on “The Origin of the Gospels” and has examined a fair amount of the evidence without any preconceived notions about Torrey's ability to prove his points.

The Armenian Vita here translated, of Marutha, a Syrian bishop of the fifth century, has an interest because of Marutha's activity as mediator between the Byzantine emperors, Arcadius and Theodosius II, and the Sassanian king Yezdegerd I.
The ancient sources for the life of Marutha are scanty nor does the biography here translated add greatly to our knowledge of him. From the Greek and Nestorian sources it is known that he was present at the important councils of the church in the last decades of the fourth century; was sent to the court of Persia, probably at least twice, once on the accession of Yezdegerd in 399 A.D. and again about 408 A.D., when Theodosius II became emperor of the eastern Romans; and that he was present at the Council of Seleucia in 410 A.D.
