Objective:
Serial position scores on verbal memory tests are sensitive to early Alzheimer’s disease (AD)-related neuropathological changes that occur in the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus. The current study examines longitudinal change in serial position scores as markers of subtle cognitive decline in older adults who may be in preclinical or at-risk states for AD.
Methods:This study uses longitudinal data from the Religious Orders Study and the Rush Memory and Aging Project. Participants (n = 141) were included if they did not have dementia at enrollment, completed follow-up assessments, and died and were classified as Braak stage I or II. Memory tests were used to calculate serial position (primacy, recency), total recall, and episodic memory composite scores. A neuropathological evaluation quantified AD, vascular, and Lewy body pathologies. Mixed effects models were used to examine change in memory scores. Neuropathologies and covariates (age, sex, education, APOE e4) were examined as moderators.
Results:Primacy scores declined (β = −.032, p < .001), whereas recency scores increased (β = .021, p = .012). No change was observed in standard memory measures. Greater neurofibrillary tangle density and atherosclerosis explained 10.4% of the variance in primacy decline. Neuropathologies were not associated with recency change.
Conclusions:In older adults with hippocampal neuropathologies, primacy score decline may be a sensitive marker of early AD-related changes. Tangle density and atherosclerosis had additive effects on decline. Recency improvement may reflect a compensatory mechanism. Monitoring for changes in serial position scores may be a useful in vivo method of tracking incipient AD.

Summary
Introduction
The need for long-term ecological monitoring
Managers of protected areas have increasingly recognized the value and need for credible, scientific information as a basis for making management decisions and working with partners and the public to conserve natural resources. The management of natural resources has become increasingly complex, both technically and politically. Managers need reliable data and information on the status and trends in the condition of key resources that they manage as a basis for conservation planning, determining whether current management practices are having the desired effect, and informing stakeholders and the general public of changes in the condition of natural resources that may be caused by stressors operating at regional or global scales.
Long-term ecological monitoring provides information needed to understand and identify change in natural systems characterized by complexity, variability, and surprises. This information can be used to assess whether observed changes are within natural levels of variability or may be the result of unwanted human influences. Data collected in a consistent way over long periods are fundamental to conservation and management because they provide the context for interpreting observed changes, and may provide the basis for initiating new management practices or changing existing practices (Carpenter 1998, Lovett et al. 2007). For example, reliable and consistently collected data from long-term studies are currently in high demand for developing quantitative models to inform conservation and action plans for addressing the ecological consequences of rapid climate change.

Within-plant and between-plants distributions of the Cooley spruce gall adelgid, Adelges cooleyi (Gillette), fundatrices were measured in “interior spruce”, Picea glauca × P. engelmannii (Moench) Voss. & Parry (Pinaceae), seed orchards in central British Columbia to develop a quantitative sampling plan. Adelgids (number of fundatrices per shoot) were abundant at the lower and middle crown heights of the tree crowns but scarce at the upper crown height, and more abundant on the ends and central one-third of branches than on the inner portions. The northern and eastern aspects of trees had slightly but significantly more adelgids than did the southern and western aspects, and terminal shoots had more adelgids than did distolateral shoots. Variance was much greater between than within trees. These data were used to create a sampling plan with a sample unit consisting of a single 1-year-old shoot selected from the ends or central area of main branches in the lower or middle portion of each sample tree. Collecting 104 samples required 69 min, and yielded an estimate of the mean number of fundatrices per shoot with a standard error of 10% of the mean.

Ontogeny, interspecific homogeneity, and intraspecific variability of female genitalic and other characters of North American Cybaeus L. Koch spiders are described and used to resolve taxonomic problems in the genus. Ontogenetic changes in spermathecal duct morphology occur as females mature and age. Three distinct ontogenetic stages are described: pre-epigynum/pre-vulva, subadult / teneral adult, and mature adult. Concordant with aspects of sexual selection theory, closely related females may be morphologically indistinguishable. Many Cybaeus species exhibit a wide range of body size. Within single species, ontogenetic stages and outlier size classes have been described as separate species. Species with similar females have been lumped under one name. Based on this, 10 new synonyms are proposed for North American Cybaeus: C. adenoides Schenkel = C. grizzlyi Schenkel; C. chaudius Exline and C. hatchi Exline = C. shoshoneus Chamberlin and Ivie; C. exlineae Chamberlin and Ivie = C. bulbosus Exline; C. hystrix Chamberlin and Ivie = C. cribelloides Chamberlin and Ivie; C. janus Chamberlin and Ivie = C. eutypus Chamberlin and Ivie; C. marinensis Chamberlin and Ivie and C. angelus Chamberlin and Ivie = C. consocius Chamberlin and Ivie; and C. olympiae Exline and C. tius Chamberlin and Ivie = C. reticulatus Simon. In addition, four old synonyms are rejected: C. grizzlyi Schenkel and C. adenoides Schenkel ≠ C. adenes Chamberlin and Ivie; C. patritus Bishop and Crosby and C. silicis Barrows ≠ C. giganteus Banks.

We have studied the emission from LEDs based on GaInNAs Quantum Wells (QWs) and InAs Quantum Dots (QDs) as a function of temperature and current. It is found that the carrier loss in GaInNAs QWs is dominated by non-radiative monomolecular and Auger processes resulting in an external quantum efficiency of only 0.08 % at 10 °C and 1000 A cm-2. In contrast, the InAs QDs have a higher external quantum efficiency, peaking at 0.8 % at 10 °C and 5 A cm-2, but this value rapidly decreases as the excited states of the QDs are filled and Auger-like processes become dominant. These results highlight the issues that must be addressed if these materials are to find commercial application: namely, the areal density of QDs must be increased and the material quality of the GaInNAs QWs must be improved.

A third season of excavation and finds analysis at Euesperides in March/April 1998 completed the fieldwork of the project begun in 1995.
Further examination of the city defences suggests that their first phase should be dated not later than the early sixth century BC. The earliest masonry buildings within (and abutting) the city wall seem to belong to the 580s/570s BC. Other discoveries included a plain pebble pavement and a decorated ‘mixed style’ mosaic which should pre-date c. 250 BC, as well as an enchytrismos burial of the fourth century BC. The preliminary results of detailed study of the coins, pottery and lamps, and of scientific analyses of wallplaster and metal, are also presented.
