Summary
Over more than 60 years of working in wildlife conservation, I have regarded fieldwork as the bedrock of my being. It’s a quest for knowledge and a chance to pass it on to others. Fieldwork with birds involves much more than the basic identification of species. It is, for example, about knowing their signs – understanding the story told by a pile of feathers on the ground (did the bird moult or was it killed?) and identifying a broken eggshell and knowing how the birds live their lives. The most basic but crucial information comes from fieldwork – how many pairs bred this year; what was their breeding success? That fieldwork knowledge is your currency. No matter who you meet – farmer, forester, policeman, politician, student or teacher – they will recognise your skill and expertise, while you will know that, no matter what they ask, you can answer with clarity, conviction and enthusiasm – if you know the answers. And besides all that, fieldwork is fun.

Summary
From the standpoint of the United States, the rise of the People's Republic of China (PRC) presents two archetypal possibilities. The first possibility is that China will conform to international norms; will not bully smaller countries; will not seek to dominate the Asia-Pacific region; will not try to overthrow international arrangements that most of the world wants to keep; and will not try to supplant U.S. influence in East Asia. The second possibility is that China will, contrary to its rhetorical promises, strive for regional hegemony; seek to displace the United States from its current position as the strongest strategic player in the region; and use its massive advantages in economic, diplomatic and military weight to pressure or coerce smaller countries to subordinate their own interests to Chinese preferences.
This dichotomy is built into the U.S. policy of hedging which attempts to simultaneously encourage the first outcome while defending against the second outcome. This is somewhat contradictory, since “unfriendly” U.S. policies that imply China is a potential adversary undercut China's confidence that it can achieve its economic and security goals in a region and a world permeated with so many U.S.-sponsored rules and arrangements.
The same dichotomy is also visible in the brief summary of U.S.–China policy that is little changed over the last three presidential administrations, and was recently restated by President Barack Obama as follows:
We welcome China's rise.… [It's] good for the world, and it's good for America. We just want to make sure that that rise occurs in a way that reinforces international norms and international rules, and enhances security and peace, as opposed to it being a source of conflict either in the region or around the world.
In the South China Sea, this dichotomy emerges over the question of whether the disputes will be settled on the basis of modern international law, as the United States wishes, or on the basis of the principle that the dominant regional power sets the guidelines for international affairs. The latter model prevailed for much of pre-modern history, with China in the dominant position and many of the other regional states more or less acquiescing. Some analysts argue that the China-centric model is the natural state of affairs for East Asia, both past and future.

We apply the idea of choosing new variables that are nonlinear functions of the old in order to simplify calculations of irrotational, surface gravity waves. The usual variables consist of the surface elevation and the surface potential, and the transformation to the new variables is a canonical (in Hamilton's sense) one so as to maintain the Hamiltonian structure of the theory. We further consider the approximation of linear dynamics in these new variables. This approximation scheme exactly reproduces the effects of the lowest-order nonlinearities in the usual variables, does well at higher orders, and also captures important features of short waves interacting with longer waves. We provide a physical interpretation of this transformation which is correct in the one-dimensional case, and approximately so in the two-dimensional case.

We derive the dynamics of small waves riding on larger waves using a canonical, Hamiltonian formulation. The small waves are treated linearly and their energy is derived to all orders in the scale separation between the waves. Our results are similar to those of Longuet-Higgins (1987), but we have extended his calculations to include gravity-capillary waves and to allow for a more general, two-dimensional, large-wave field. Our result for the small-wave Hamiltonian is expressed in both Eulerian (horizontal) coordinate system and a non-inertial system determined by the large wave's surface. On further assuming scale separation between the small and large waves the averaged Lagrangian equations and the action density are derived. Action conservation is explicitly demonstrated.

Ontologies are entering widespread use in many areas such as knowledge and content management, electronic commerce and the Semantic Web. In this paper we show how the use of ontologies has helped us overcome some important problems in the development of pervasive computing environments. We have integrated ontologies and Semantic Web technology into our pervasive computing infrastructure. Our investigations have shown that Semantic Web technology can be integrated into our CORBA-based infrastructure to augment several important services. This work suggests a number of requirements for future research in the development of ontologies, reasoners, languages and interfaces.

A new process was developed for deposition of the silicates and oxides of metals such as zirconium and hafnium at low substrate temperatures (100–300°C). The silicon and oxygen source is tris(tert-butoxy)silanol, (tBuO)3SiOH, and the metal precursors are metal amides. A typical reaction is
ZrL4 + 2 (tBuO)3SiOH → ZrSi2O6 + 4HL + 6H2C=C(CH3)2 + 2 H2O
in which the ligand L is ethylmethylamide, -NEtMe. The precursor vapors were alternately pulsed into a heated reactor, yielding about 0.3 to 0.7 nm of metal silicate film for each cycle. Replacing the silanol pulses with water pulses yields pure metal oxides with a thickness of about 0.1 to 0.15 nm per cycle. The silicon content of the films can be adjusted to any desired value by replacing some of the silanol pulses by water pulses. This new process has a number of advantages over previous methods for depositing metal silicates. Uniformity of thickness and stoichiometry are readily achieved. The deposition atmosphere is non-oxidizing, so that formation of low-k interfacial oxides between the deposited layer and a silicon substrate is minimized. The new halogen-free precursors avoid halogen contamination of films and corrosion of deposition systems. This process is a promising method for forming the next generation of ultra-thin high-k gate dielectrics in silicon-based microelectronics.

This month Mycological Research News features a report of an extraordinary richness of undescribed truffle-like fungi in Australia, and an explanation of why mycologists should always deposit voucher specimens and cultures to enable their work to be validated, co-authored by 18 mycologists.
Amongst the 21 papers included in this issue are three on the biocontrol of insect pests by Erynia and Metarhizium species, including methods of application and longevity of conidial preparations. Biomass estimations by ergosterol in decomposing leaves in the Everglades, and by chitin in Crinipellis infections on cacao are described. Variation in Phytophthora infestans provides evidence of heterokaryons, conidial production in Colletotrichum acutatum is favoured by monsoon conditions, and the conidia of Pestalotiopsis neglecta inhibit other fungi. Six papers on mycorrhizas address competition with saprobic fungi and other ectomycorrhizal species, the characterization of a chitin synthase, variation at the molecular level in two endomycorrhizal fungi, a culture technique, and the early response of tobacco roots to colonization. Amongst other papers are ones characterizing a protease in Schizophyllum, describing incompatability groups in Pleurotus tuberregium, and showing different Venturia species attack different pears.
The following new scientific names are introduced: Pseudohelicomyces gen. nov.; Anthostomella acuminata, A. applanata, A. caffrariae, A. colligata, A. meerensis, A. palmae, A. raphiae, A. spiralis, Pseudohelicomyces albus, Ramulispora cerealis, and Trichoderma stromaticum spp. nov.

Ion-assisted deposition allows for independent control of ion energy, ion flux, and adatom flux incident on the growing film. We describe herein general trends in property and structure modification of thin film metals using this technique.

When one speaks of the Inner Hebridean fungi one is referring to the floras of Mull (1,744 spp.) and Rhum (905 spp.) for these are the only islands where the fungi have been seriously studied; only a few collections have been made in Eigg, Coll and Tiree, Raasay and Colonsay while Islay and Jura have been almost entirely neglected by mycologists. Recently attention has been paid to the fungal flora of Skye where over 75 stations have been examined. However, only 6% of the species recorded for VCs 102–104 are not recorded from Mull.

The techniques of acoustic positioning without the use of resonant cavities have been explored and developed over a number of years and the currently available capabilities are reviewed. The performance and characteristics of these nonresonant acoustic systems are described in regard to containerless processing with emphasis on the low-g environment. This includes manipulation and mixing of liquid drops, super-cooling phenomena, heating to temperatures of 1600°C or higher, rapid cooling solidification, and surface shape control. Some possible applications are measurements of physical properties of substances at high temperatures or of highly reactive specimens, and the formation of unique glasses and alloys of new compositions.

The electron microprobe has been used to analyse mixtures of fine-grained silicates such as clay minerals in order to determine directly how cations distribute themselves between mixtures of two fine-grained ion-exchanging materials in pure water and in dilute solutions.
Cation distributions have been determined for mixtures of:
(a) a zeolite, faujasite, and the clay mineral in an Arizona bentonite
(b) the clay mineral in an Arizona bentonite and hectorite; and
(c) three synthetic beidellites of varying charge density.
Distributions have been found for varying ratios of Ca to K ions in the suspensions. The results for the faujasite-bentonite mixture show complex behavior and exhibit curves with maxima and minima. For the system bentonite-hectorite most of the Ca goes to the montmorillonite in the bentonite. For the mixture of synthetic beidellites, the results are rather confusing but it appears that the calcium is more associated with the beidellite with the highest exchange capacity. In all these systems, hydrolysis takes place and the hydronium ion plays a part in determining the equilibrium.
