Introduction
Research indicates improvements in negative symptoms and empathy for schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) after mindfulness-based interventions (MBI). Current treatment approaches for SSD remain limited regarding their effectiveness on negative symptoms and sociocognitive deficits. After oxytocin (OXT) administration, especially in a positive social context, an increase in empathy could be shown. The effect of mindfulness in combination with OXT has not yet been examined.
ObjectivesThis study investigates the additional effect of OXT administration combined with MBI on empathy and negative symptoms in patients with SSD.
MethodsAn experimental, randomised, triple-blinded, placebo-controlled study is proposed. Based on power calculations, 140 participants with SSD will be recruited at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. A dose of intranasal oxytocin with 24 I.U. or placebo will be administered 45 minutes before each session. Following each administration, a total of four MBI interventions will take place for two weeks. Empathy as primary outcome will be measured using validated psychometric questionnaires. Outcomes, including negative symptoms and OXT plasma levels, will be measured at baseline and post-intervention. A 2x2 mixed-model ANCOVA design with time as within- and group as between-subject factor will be calculated to assess empathy and negative symptom changes.
ResultsThe study hypothesises that applying intranasal oxytocin in combination with MBI will increase empathy and reduce negative symptoms in patients with SSD.
ConclusionsFindings could provide insight into enhancing therapies like MBI by utilising OXT as a possible supplementary treatment option. Findings could therefore pave the way for a personalised psychiatric medicine treatment for individuals with SSD.

The Sunrise balloon-borne solar observatory consists of a 1m aperture Gregory telescope, a UV filter imager, an imaging vector polarimeter, an image stabilization system and further infrastructure. The first science flight of Sunrise yielded high-quality data that reveal the structure, dynamics and evolution of solar convection, oscillations and magnetic fields at a resolution of around 100 km in the quiet Sun. Here we describe very briefly the mission and the first results obtained from the Sunrise data, which include a number of discoveries.

In this article we discuss the applicability of global scattering functions for structure analysis of Grazing Incidence Small Angle X-ray Scattering (GISAXS) data. Contrary to rigorous analysis of the full 2-D detector image, which can be performed with complex simulation models, the global scattering functions described here will be used to model transverse detector scans in the $q_{\parallel}$ reciprocal scattering planes. In contrast to a full GISAXS analysis, this procedure cannot explain structural features perpendicular to the sample plane. The discussed method is useful for the analysis of weakly correlated films. These films are e.g. found in polymer inorganic composite materials based on commercially available nanoparticles. In hybrid material systems polydisperse structures, including particle aggregates without precisely defined shape are formed. The pictured approach, which models scattering in terms of structural levels, has been previously applied with success in conventional transmission SAXS geometry. It is based on conventional exponential and power laws. Hence, data analysis becomes less complex compared to simulation approaches. Here we examine if this unified fitting model can be used to model diffuse, non specular scattering resulting from GISAXS. In this context the applicability and limit of its application to diffuse scattering in the GISAXS geometry is discussed. Furthermore diffuse $q_{\parallel}$ scattering from different ideal particle types is simulated and compared with fitted results. To verify our approach, fit results from experimental GISAXS curves obtained for real samples are compared with results from Scanning Probe Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy studies. The samples investigated range from evaporated Au films to hybrid TiO2/polymer films and demonstrate the usefulness in the structural analysis of complex films.

EURECA (European Underground Rare Event Calorimeter Array) is an astro-particle physics facility aiming to directly detect galactic dark matter. The Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane has been selected as host laboratory. The EURECA collaboration unites CRESST, EDELWEISS and the Spanish-French experiment ROSEBUD, thus concentrating and focussing effort on cryogenic detector research in Europe into a single facility. EURECA will use a target mass of up to one ton, enough to explore WIMP – nucleon scalar scattering cross sections in the region of 10-9 – 10-10 picobarn. A major advantage of EURECA is the planned use of more than just one target material (multi target experiment for WIMP identification).

We present wind and temperature profiles at Dome C measured during the polar summer by balloon born sonds. Data from 197 flights have been processed for 4 campaigns between 2000 and 2004. We show the exceptionnal wind conditions at Dome C: averaged ground wind speed is 3.6 m s-1. We noticed in mid-november the presence of high altitude strong winds (40 m s-1) probably due to the polar vortex which disappear in summer. These winds seem to have no effect on seeing measurements made with a DIMM at the same period. Temperature profiles exhibit a minimum at height 5500 m (over the snow surface) that defines the tropopause. Surface layer temperature profile has negative gradient in the first 50 m above ground in the afternoon and a strong inversion layer (5°C over 50 m) around midnight. Wind profiles are compared with other astronomical sites, and with a meteorological model from Meteo France.

We report on non-contact and non-destructive spatially resolved characterization of traps and luminescence centers in vanadium-free semi-insulating 6H-SiC. Two optical techniques were employed: photoluminescence (PL) mapping and thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) imaging on SiC wafers. PL and TSL topography reveal inhomogeneity at the periphery regions of the wafers. Low-temperature PL spectra show broad bands with the maxima at 1.75eV and 1.2eV, including a sharp zero-phonon line at 1.344eV. The TSL glow curves at T>80K show different peaks in the visible and infrared bands. The luminescence spectrum of the 105K TSL peak replicates 1.75eV band, while the 120K peak corresponds to the 1.2eV band. Additionally, the high temperature TSL peak at 210K shows an excellent match with 1.344eV zero phonon line. The trap energies of different peaks are calculated. We discuss a model of complex defects composed of closely spaced electron (hole) trap and UD3 defect.

The hydrodynamic response of metal targets to volume heating by energy deposition of intense heavy-ion beams was investigated experimentally. Recent improvements in beam parameters led to a marked increase in specific deposition power: 2·101040Ar18+ ions of 300 MeV/u focused to a spot size of 300 μm (σ) × 540 μm (σ) yield a specific deposition energy in solid lead of approximately 1 kJ/g in the Bragg peak, delivered within 250 ns [full width at half maximum (FWHM)]. This value allowed us for the first time to observe heavy-ion-beam-induced hydrodynamic expansion of metal volume targets. Measurements comprise expansion velocities of free surfaces of up to 290 ± 20 m/s, surface temperatures of ejected target matter of 1600–1750 K, and pressure waves in solid metal bulk targets of 0.16 GPa maximum absolute value and 0.8 μs FWHM. The experimental results agree well with the results of a 2D hydrodynamic code. Inside the interaction zone, which can only be accessed by simulation, maximum temperatures are 2800 K and maximum pressures are 3.8 GPa.
