Weed scientists regularly attend conferences, symposiums, and workshops to communicate with colleagues about their current weed research programs. Communication of research can be hindered by poor visual aids. Computer programs, film recorders, and color printers have greatly increased the ease of visual aid production but have also increased the opportunity to prepare incomprehensible presentations. The size of the text, the amount of information presented, and the contrast between the text color and background color are the most important factors that affect the legibility of visual aids. Text, tables, and graphs should be short, simple, and legible. Computers and film recorders are not essential to produce good visual aids. The greatest assets in the production of visual aids are common sense, familiarity with the production equipment, sufficient preparation time, and critical assessment of the visual aids well in advance of the presentation date.

The spread of noxious weeds on rangeland and forests in the United States has been described as a raging biological wildfire. This analogy applies to aspects of spread, impact, and control of weeds. Patterns and means of spread are similar. Noxious weeds and wildfires can dramatically change natural plant communities, alter distribution and species composition of wildlife populations, damage watersheds and increase soil erosion, and adversely affect recreation and aesthetic values. Wildfire management involves prevention, early detection, timely control, and site rehabilitation; elements which are also the foundation of sound weed management. Principles and practices associated with wildfire suppression can be used to illustrate many weed science fundamentals, and to improve weed management programs. Federal land management agencies are directed to train employees in effective weed management and to increase public awareness about noxious weeds. Most agency employees are familiar with wildfire management; knowledge which could be useful in teaching weed management principles. Fire prevention could serve as a model to promote greater public awareness of the impact of noxious weeds and the need for weed prevention and early detection.

Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper spectral data and field survey information were combined to identify specific land cover types associated with 1741 dyers woad infestation points on the Cache National Forest in northern Utah. Ten of 60 possible cover types were strongly associated with current dyers woad infestations, and therefore considered highly suited to establishment and survival of the weed. Non-infested land of the same “highly suited” cover types comprised an additional 24 714 ha within the 149 021-ha study area, suggesting the potential for an eventual 124-fold increase in dyers woad incidence on the forest.

Chlorsulfuron at 0.018 kg ai/ha, metsulfuron at 0.0045 kg ai/ha, and 2,4-D at 1.1 kg ae/ha plus dicamba at 0.28 kg ae/ha were applied over snow-covered winter wheat to study the feasibility of combining herbicides with a graphite snow-removal treatment. Chlorsulfuron or metsulfuron applied on snow effectively controlled annual broadleaf weeds when tank mixed with urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) at 28 kg N/ha and graphite powder at 20 kg/ha. Over-snow treatments of 2,4-D plus dicamba plus UAN did not control weeds. There was no antagonism or synergism among herbicides, UAN, or graphite.

Control of tall larkspur on mountain rangelands would substantially reduce cattle poisoning. Several herbicides were evaluated for their control of tall larkspur in subalpine and aspen vegetation types. Glyphosate (2.2 kg ai ha−1) and picloram (2.2 kg ae ha−1) killed more than 88% of larkspur plants in both vegetation types. Clopyralid and triclopyr were ineffective at comparable rates. Metsulfuron (88 and 138 g ai ha−1) provided variable control. Glyphosate is nonselective and killed all perennial vegetation, except for Thurbers fescue and mountain brome in the aspen type. Picloram applied at 4.5 kg ha−1 suppressed grasses on the subalpine site, but allowed grasses to increase at lower rates. All herbicides reduced forb cover.

Glyphosate effectively kills duncecap and tall larkspur on mountain rangelands but it is nonselective and kills all other vegetation it contacts. Two selective application methods to treat individual plants were compared to demonstrate their efficacy in controlling larkspur and their effect on associated plant species: (1) spot spray with glyphosate concentration at 2% product solution (0.8% ai); (2) hand held wiper applicator with glyphosate concentration at 33% production solution (13.5% ai). The two methods were equally effective in killing most of the larkspur plants, but the sprayer applicator was more rapid and easier to apply. Neither method adversely affected foliar cover of associated perennial species. Glyphosate must be applied to the entire plant to ensure its mortality.

Translocation of 14C-glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine] in tall morningglory [Ipomoea purpurea (L.) Roth., ‘Heavenly Blue’] was compared with movement of 14C-photosynthate. The flow of photosynthate was manipulated by creating assimilate sinks in mature leaves and cotyledons using combinations of stem girdling, leaf shading, and localized cytokinin application. Comparisons of 14C distribution patterns indicated minor differences between glyphosate and assimilate sink partitioning when 14C-glyphosate or 14CO2 were applied to a single leaf. Labeled glyphosate moved upward through stem girdles in greater proportions than 14C from photosynthate, suggesting a greater capacity for glyphosate to transfer from symplast to apoplast. When 14C-glyphosate was applied to the stem, 14C still moved symplastically to natural and artificial sinks, but apoplastic movement into all transpiring tissues above the site of application greatly increased. Results support the classification of glyphosate as an ambimobile rather than a phloem-mobile herbicide.

Several herbicides were evaluated for their ability to control duncecap larkspur, a serious poisonous plant on mountain rangelands in the western U.S. Duncecap larkspur density was reduced from 33 to 93% by triclopyr applied at 2.2, 4.5, and 9.0 kg ae/ha. Picloram applied at 2.2 and 4.5 kg ae/ha reduced density from 33 to 99%. Metsulfuron applied at 86 and 138 g ai/ha reduced density from 50 to 98%. Glyphosate was the most effective herbicide, reducing density by 90 to 100% when applied at 2.2 kg ai/ha. Glyphosate reduced the cover of grasses and perennial forbs but increased cover of annual forbs. All rates of picloram and metsulfuron reduced forb cover. Grass cover increased in most plots where duncecap larkspur and forbs were reduced.

Timing and application rates of herbicides were evaluated for control of duncecap and tall larkspur on mountain rangelands. Picloram, triclopyr, glyphosate, and metsulfuron were applied at three rates during three growth stages (vegetative, bud, and flower) to evaluate the rate by growth stage interaction. Picloram was equally effective over all growth stages when applied at 1.1 or 2.2 kg ae ha−1. Metsulfuron was most effective when applied in the vegetative stage; 0.035 kg ai ha−1 killed 95% of duncecap larkspur, but 0.14 kg ha−1 was required to kill the same percentage of tall larkspur. Glyphosate at ≤ 2.2 kg ai ha−1 was least effective when applied in the flower stage compared to earlier growth stages. Triclopyr showed variable control at rates from 1.1 to 4.5 kg ae ha−1.
Russian Knapweed (Acroptilon repens) Control with Low Rates of Aminopyralid on Range and Pasture

Russian knapweed is an invasive weed of rangeland, pasture, and natural areas throughout western North America. Aminopyralid is a new pyridine carboxylic acid herbicide that has activity on Russian knapweed at lower use rates than current standard treatments. The objectives of this study were to compare aminopyralid efficacy at the bud to early flower timing and the fall timing with commercial standards for Russian knapweed control. Studies were conducted at five locations in California, Utah, and Wyoming in heavily infested pastures or rangeland. When applied in summer at the bud to early flower timing, aminopyralid at 0.07 kg ae/ha controlled Russian knapweed effectively and was comparable to picloram + 2,4-D amine (0.56 + 1.12 kg ae/ha) at 12 and 24 months after treatment (MAT). The addition of 2,4-D with lower rates of aminopyralid did not improve control. When applied after seed set at the fall timing, control from aminopyralid at 0.05 kg ae/ha and higher was also comparable to picloram (0.56 kg ae/ha) and better than clopyralid (0.42 kg ae/ha) and imazapic (0.18 and 0.21 kg ae/ha) 12 and 21 MAT. Aminopyralid controlled Russian knapweed effectively at lower use rates than current commercial standards and good control lasted for at least 21 to 24 MAT.
Medusahead Control with Fall- and Spring-Applied Herbicides on Northern Utah Foothills

Medusahead is an aggressive, nonnative, winter annual grass that infests rangelands in the western United States. Its ability to rapidly spread, outcompete native vegetation, and destroy forage potential is a primary concern for landowners and land managers exposed to this weed. Prescribed burns were conducted at a low- and high-litter site in northern Utah prior to conducting experiments to evaluate the effects of fall and spring applications of sulfometuron at 39 or 79 g ai/ha and imazapic at 70 or 140 g ai/ha on medusahead and associated perennial grasses, annual and perennial forbs, and bare ground cover. Large differences in pretreatment medusahead litter between the sites resulted in less surface area burning at the low-litter site (∼10%) compared to the high-litter site (∼80%). Higher herbicide rates significantly increased medusahead control and bare ground cover; however, this rate affect largely depended on site, season, and herbicide. The low- and high-litter sites did not differ significantly in perennial grass cover 2 yr after burning. Annual forb cover was greater, but perennial forb cover was lower at the low-litter site compared to the high-litter site. Several treatment combinations were identified as having the potential to maintain greater than 50% medusahead control in the second year after herbicide applications. These results collectively demonstrate that potential exists to successfully control medusahead and produce a window of opportunity to reintroduce a greater abundance of perennial species back into the plant community via seeding.
