Viscoelastic flow past a cylinder is a classic benchmark problem that is not completely understood. Using novel three-dimensional (3D) holographic particle velocimetry, we report three main discoveries of the elastic instability upstream of a single cylinder in viscoelastic channel flow. First, we observe that upstream vortices initiate at the corner between the cylinder and the wall, and grow with increasing flow rate. Second, beyond a critical Weissenberg number, the flow upstream becomes unsteady and switches between two bistable configurations, leading to symmetry breaking in the cylinder axis direction that is highly 3D in nature. Lastly, we find that the disturbance of the elastic instability propagates relatively far upstream via an elastic wave, and is weakly correlated with that in the cylinder wake. The wave speed and the extent of the instability increase with Weissenberg number, indicating an absolute instability in viscoelastic fluids.

Poly[sulfur-random-1,3-diisopropenylbenzene (DIB)] copolymers synthesized via inverse vulcanization form electrochemically active polymers used as cathodes for high-energy density Li–S batteries, capable of enhanced capacity retention (1005 mAh/g at 100 cycles) and lifetimes of over 500 cycles. In this prospective, we demonstrate how analytical electron microscopy can be employed as a powerful tool to explore the origins of the enhanced capacity retention. We analyze morphological and compositional features when the copolymers, with DIB contents up to 50% by mass, are blended with carbon nanoparticles. Replacing the elemental sulfur with the copolymers improves the compatibility and interfacial contact between active sulfur compounds and conductive carbons. There also appears to be improvements of the cathode mechanical stability that leads to less cracking but preserving porosity. This compatibilization scheme through stabilized organosulfur copolymers represents an alternative strategy to the nanoscale encapsulation schemes which are often used to improve the cycle life in high-energy density Li–S batteries.

Electron microscopy methods have been used to investigate the structure and morphology of a hexagonal columnar mesophase, formed by novel amphiphilic and dendrimeric liquid crystals. Alignment of the columns is examined by a surface condition that is suitable for the molecular architecture. For all the materials investigated, columns aligned perpendicular to an evaporated carbon surface. In the case of asymmetric amphiphilic compounds, planar alignment of asymmetric compounds was induced by a water surface. However, planar alignment on water was not possible for a symmetric dendrimer. Based on analysis of electron diffraction and images, the dimension and the stiffness of columnar assemblies is found to depend on molecular architecture.

Block copolymer melts with a near-symmetric composition can microphase-separate to form a lamellar morphology where unfavorable monomeric interactions are reduced by an antiparallel layering of the polymer chains (see Figure 2, discussed later). The symmetry of such a block copolymer is the same as for small-molecule, smectic-A liquid crystals, which also exhibit (parallel or antiparallel) layering. Because of their shared symmetry, their quasistatic mechanical properties are of the same form. To lowest order, the energy of distortion of the lamellar pattern can be expressed as a sum of a compressional/dilational and a bend energy (see, for example, Reference 2):
where n is a unit vector normal to the layers, and ε and ∇ n are the layer dilational and bending strain, respectively. B and K are the corresponding moduli. These have been measured only recently for block copolymers. The ratio of these moduli yields a characteristic microscopic length:
which is calculated to be a fraction of the layer spacing d0.
Similarities are also found in the dynamic properties of polymeric and smallmolecule smectics. These similarities are found at low strain rate and amplitude where the rheological response is controlled by their similar layered structures and associated defects. During either steady or dynamic shear, certain defect and domain motions are induced such that a steady-state alignment of the director has been observed. In this report, we discuss defect structure and how the much more viscous nature of these polymeric layered materials influences the distribution and relative population of each defect type. We also discuss how these defects can control material stress-relaxation behavior.
