Social anxiety moderates the association between adolescent irritability and bully perpetration

Background:
Preliminary work suggests anxiety moderates the relationship between irritability and bullying. As anxiety increases, the link between irritability and perpetration decreases. We hypothesize that any moderation effect of anxiety is driven by social anxiety symptoms. We sought to explicate the moderating effect of anxiety, while clarifying relations to other aggressive behaviors.
Methods:A sample of adolescents (n = 169, mean = 12.42 years of age) were assessed using clinician rated assessments of anxiety, parent reports of irritability and bullying behaviors (perpetration, generalized aggression, and victimization). Correlations assessed zero-order relations between variables, and regression-based moderation analyses were used to test interactions. Johnson–Neyman methods were used to represent significant interactions.
Results:Irritability was significantly related to bullying (r = .403, p < .001). Social, but not generalized, anxiety symptoms significantly moderated the effect of irritability on bully perpetration (t(160) = −2.94, b = −.01, p = .0038, ΔR2 = .0229, F(1, 160) = 8.635). As social anxiety symptoms increase, the link between irritability and perpetration decreases.
Conclusions:Understanding how psychopathology interacts with social behaviors is of great importance. Higher social anxiety is linked to reduced relations between irritability and bullying; however, the link between irritability and other aggression remains positive. Comprehensively assessing how treatment of psychopathology impacts social behaviors may improve future intervention.
Hospital-based enhanced surveillance for West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease

Accurate data on the incidence of West Nile virus (WNV) disease are important for directing public health education and control activities. The objective of this project was to assess the underdiagnosis of WNV neuroinvasive disease through laboratory testing of patients with suspected viral meningitis or encephalitis at selected hospitals serving WNV-endemic regions in three states. Of the 279 patients with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens tested for WNV immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies, 258 (92%) were negative, 19 (7%) were positive, and two (1%) had equivocal results. Overall, 63% (12/19) of patients with WNV IgM-positive CSF had WNV IgM testing ordered by their attending physician. Seven (37%) cases would not have been identified as probable WNV infections without the further testing conducted through this project. These findings indicate that over a third of WNV infections in patients with clinically compatible neurological illness might be undiagnosed due to either lack of testing or inappropriate testing, leading to substantial underestimates of WNV neuroinvasive disease burden. Efforts should be made to educate healthcare providers and laboratorians about the local epidemiology of arboviral diseases and the optimal tests to be used in different clinical situations.

Accurate data on West Nile virus (WNV) cases help guide public health education and control activities, and impact regional WNV blood product screening procedures. During an outbreak of WNV disease in Arizona, records from patients with meningitis or encephalitis were reviewed to determine the proportion tested for WNV. Of 60 patients identified with meningitis or encephalitis, 24 (40%) were tested for WNV. Only 12 (28%) of 43 patients aged <50 years were tested for WNV compared to 12 (71%) of 17 patients aged ⩾50 years (P<0·01). Patients with clinical signs of weakness or paralysis, elevated CSF protein, admitted to an inpatient facility, or discharged to a rehabilitation facility were also more likely to have WNV testing performed. The lack of testing in younger age groups and in those with less severe disease probably resulted in substantial underestimates of WNV neuroinvasive disease burden.

Summary
Until the 1980s, physicians had few options for parents of fetuses with congenital malformations; essentially, these were to terminate the pregnancy or continue and possibly modify the timing and/or method of delivery. Rapid advances in prenatal imaging and diagnosis over the last 20 years, coupled with increased understanding of the natural history of many fetal anomalies, has led to the identification of the fetus as a patient and to the burgeoning field of fetal surgery. An increasing number of selected fetal anomalies are amenable to prenatal intervention (Table 73.1), yet it has been difficult to demonstrate efficacy with regard to improved outcomes. With the exception of myelomeningocele and twin–twin transfusion syndrome, anomalies amenable to fetal repair yield only 2–5 cases per year at the busiest fetal treatment centers. Thus, the dearth of patient volume has dictated that outcome assessment be done over a long time often using historical controls. Also, anomalies in which no prenatal treatment reliably results in fetal death (e.g., lung lesion producing hydrops) cannot be ethically “randomized” for prospective study. Randomized prospective trials have been done for several “high” volume anomalies. To date, there are two completed randomized trials for congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and there are ongoing prospective randomized trials for myelomeningocele and twin–twin transfusion syndrome, each of which is illustrated below.
Risks and benefits
Assessing risks and benefits in fetal surgery is a complex task. Both the fetus and the mother must be considered.
An approach to modelling the effect of environmental and physiological factors upon biomass accumulation in winter wheat

Six sites of variable soil type and environments in England and Scotland were sown with winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Mercia) in the autumns of 1992 and 1993 with optimum inputs for growth. Crop monitoring between February and grain maturity provided data to investigate environmental and physiological factors important in controlling biomass accumulation.
With increasing use of crop modelling as a tool for interpreting experiments and as crop management decision support systems, it is important that all influences on crop productivity are understood. The ‘radiation use efficiency’ or radiation conversion coefficient provides a convenient basis to study these influences.
Significant differences in seasonal radiation conversion coefficients were observed between sites (P < 0·001), ranging from 2·82 to 3·87 g total dry matter/MJ absorbed photosynthetically active radiation. A series of simple dry matter models were developed to help explain biomass accumulation in relation to a number of environmental variables (using the measured green area index as an input) with correlation coefficients [ges ] 0·98 obtained across all sites. Apart from sunlight, differences in the canopy's ability to accumulate nitrogen and maintenance respiration costs were the most significant factors (P < 0·001). The nitrogen effect suggests changes in the conversion of assimilates with nitrogen availability, despite relatively high nutrition levels ([ges ] 180 kg N/ha).
Over all sites the canopy extinction coefficient could be described as a linear function of the site spring time plant population (P < 0·01). A more detailed model considered canopy light attenuation to vary between sites according to sowing date and autumn/winter plant establishment and environment.
Dynamics of nitrogen capture without fertilizer: the baseline for fertilizing winter wheat in the UK

Experiments at three sites in 1993, six sites in 1994 and eight sites in 1995, mostly after oilseed rape, tested effects of previous fertilizer N (differing by 200 kg/ha for 1993 and 1994 and 300 kg/ha for 1995) and date of sowing (differing by about 2 months) on soil mineral N and N uptake by winter wheat cv. Mercia which received no fertilizer N. Soil mineral N to 90 cm plus crop N (‘soil N supply’; SNS) in February was 103 and 76 kg/ha after large and small amounts of previous fertilizer N respectively but was not affected by date of sowing. Previous fertilizer N seldom affected crop N in spring because sowing was too late for N capture during autumn, but it did affect soil mineral N, particularly in the 60–90 cm soil horizon, presumably due to over-winter leaching. Tillering generally occurred in spring, and was delayed but not diminished by later sowing. Previous fertilizer N increased shoot survival more than it increased shoot production. Final shoot number was affected by previous fertilizer N, but not by date of sowing. Overall, there were 29 surviving tillers/g SNS.
N uptakes at fortnightly intervals from spring to harvest at two core sites were described well by linear rates. The difference between sowings in the fitted date with 10 kg/ha crop N was 1 month; these dates were not significantly affected by previous fertilizer. N uptake rates were increased by both previous fertilizer N and late sowing. Rates of N uptake related closely to soil mineral N in February such that ‘equivalent recovery’ was achieved in late May or early June. At one site there was evidence that most of the residue from previous fertilizer N had moved below 90 cm by February, but N uptake was nevertheless increased. Two further ‘satellite’ sites behaved similarly. Thus at 14 out of 17 sites, N uptake until harvest related directly and with approximate parity to soil mineral N in February (R2 = 0·79), a significant intercept being in keeping with an atmospheric contribution of 20–40 kg/ha N at all sites.
It is concluded that, on retentive soils in the UK, SNS in early spring was a good indicator of N availability throughout growth of unfertilized wheat, because the N residues arising from previous fertilizer mineralized before analysis, yet remained largely within root range. The steady rates of soil mineral N recovery were taken as being dependent on progressively deeper root development. Thus, even if soil mineral N equated with a crop's N requirement, fresh fertilizer applications might be needed before ‘equivalent recovery’ of soil N, to encourage the earlier processes of tiller production and canopy expansion. The later process of grain filling was sustained by continued N uptake (mean 41 kg/ha) coming apparently from N leached to the subsoil (relating to previous fertilizer use) as well as from sources not related to previous fertilizer use; significant net mineralization was apparent in some subsoils.
Simple winter wheat green area index model under UK conditions

A simple model of canopy expansion and senescence with accumulated thermal time from sowing was used to describe differences in canopy development and potential size across a range of sites in the UK between 1992 and 1995. The principal model inputs were nitrogen, temperature and sowing date. The model was calibrated across six sites within the major wheat growing areas using canopy data collected during the 1992/93 and 1993/94 growing seasons and was validated using data collected in the 1994/95 season. The model was able to predict the time course of green area index (GAI) over a season with an r2[ges ]0·87 for the five English sites, and an r2=0·68 for the single Scottish site. This model may prove to be a useful approach to forecasting the potential canopy size, based upon an estimate or measure of the total nitrogen available to the crop (both from applied fertilizer and the soil).
Silicate and ice emission bands in the ISO spectrum of the PAH-emitting carbon-rich planetary nebula CPD-56°8032

Combined ISO SWS and LWS spectroscopy is presented of the late WC-type planetary nebula nucleus CPD-56†8032 and its carbon-rich nebula. The extremely broad coverage (2.4–197 μm) enables us to recognize the clear and simultaneous presence of emission features from both oxygen- and carbon-rich circumstellar materials. Removing a smooth continuum highlights bright emission bands characteristic of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (hereafter PAHs) in the 3–15 μm region, bands from crystalline silicates longwards of 18 μm, and the 43- and 62-μm bands of crystalline water ice. We discuss the probable evolutionary state and history of this unusual object in terms of (a) a recent transition from an O-rich to a C-rich outflow following a helium shell flash; or (b) a carbon-rich nebular outflow encountering an O-rich comet cloud orbiting in a Kuiper-belt-like distribution.

The widespread availability of large amounts of cereal straw has led to a growing interest in its use in ruminant livestock although it has a low content of essential nutrients, especially nitrogen. Treatment and/or supplementation of nitrogen, energy and minerals are necessary for optimal utilization of straw.
The aim of the experiment was to investigate the effect of different sources of nitrogen supplements offered with straw-based diets on the milk yield and milk constituents of dairy cattle and digestibility of diets.
