We assessed the effectiveness of lyophilised banked human milk (HM) as a fortifier to feed very-low-birth-weight infants (VLBWI). This study aimed to evaluate the safety and tolerability of HM with HM lyophilisate as an additive compared with the standard additive (cows’ milk protein). In this phase I double-blind randomised controlled clinical trial, set in the intensive and intermediate care units of a tertiary hospital, forty VLBWI were enrolled and allocated into two groups: HM plus HM lyophilisate (LioNeo) or HM plus commercial additive (HMCA). The inclusion criteria were preterm infants, birth weight 750–1500 g, small or adequate for gestational age, exclusively receiving donor HM, volume ≥ 100 ml/kg per d and haemodynamically stable. Participants were followed up for 21 consecutive days. The primary outcome measures were necrotising enterocolitis (NEC), late-onset sepsis (LOS), death, gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding or perforation, diarrhoea, regurgitation, vomiting and abdominal distension. The LioNeo and HMCA groups had similar weights at baseline. The regression models showed no differences between the groups in terms of the primary outcomes. Diarrhoea, GI perforation, NEC and LOS were absent in the LioNeo group (one LOS and one NEC in the HMCA group). Multiple regression analysis with the total volume of milk as a covariate did not show significant differences. The lyophilisation of donor HM was considered safe and tolerable for use in stable haemodynamically VLBWI.

There is no suitable vaccine against human visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and available drugs are toxic and/or present high cost. In this context, diagnostic tools should be improved for clinical management and epidemiological evaluation of disease. However, the variable sensitivity and/or specificity of the used antigens are limitations, showing the necessity to identify new molecules to be tested in a more sensitive and specific serology. In the present study, an immunoproteomics approach was performed in Leishmania infantum promastigotes and amastigotes employing sera samples from VL patients. Aiming to avoid undesired cross-reactivity in the serological assays, sera from Chagas disease patients and healthy subjects living in the endemic region of disease were also used in immunoblottings. The most reactive spots for VL samples were selected, and 29 and 21 proteins were identified in the promastigote and amastigote extracts, respectively. Two of them, endonuclease III and GTP-binding protein, were cloned, expressed, purified and tested in ELISA experiments against a large serological panel, and results showed high sensitivity and specificity values for the diagnosis of disease. In conclusion, the identified proteins could be considered in future studies as candidate antigens for the serodiagnosis of human VL.

The aims of the present work were to test the effect of tamoxifen administered topically and the therapeutic efficacy of tamoxifen and pentavalent antimonial combinations in an experimental model of cutaneous leishmaniasis. BALB/c mice infected with a luciferase expressing line of Leishmania amazonensis were treated with topical tamoxifen in two different formulations (ethanol or oil-free cream) as monotherapy or in co-administration with pentavalent antimonial. Treatment efficacy was evaluated by lesion size and parasite burden, quantified through luminescence, at the end of treatment and 4 weeks later. Topical tamoxifen, formulated in ethanol or as a cream, was shown to be effective. The interaction between tamoxifen and pentavalent antimonial was additive in vitro. Treatment with combined schemes containing tamoxifen and pentavalent antimonial was effective in reducing lesion size and parasite burden. Co-administration of tamoxifen and pentavalent antimonial was superior to monotherapy with antimonial.

Declines in populations of the Critically Endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper Calidris pygmaeus have been rapid, with the breeding population now perhaps numbering fewer than 120 pairs. The reasons for this decline remain unresolved. Whilst there is evidence that hunting in wintering areas is an important factor, loss of suitable habitat on passage and wintering areas is also of concern. While some key sites for the species are already documented, many of their wintering locations are described here for the first time. Their wintering range primarily stretches from Bangladesh to China. Comprehensive surveys of potential Spoon-billed Sandpiper wintering sites from 2005 to 2013 showed a wide distribution with three key concentrations in Myanmar and Bangladesh, but also regular sites in China, Vietnam and Thailand. The identification of all important non-breeding sites remains of high priority for the conservation of the species. Here, we present the results of field surveys of wintering Spoon-billed Sandpipers that took place in six countries between 2005 and 2013 and present species distribution models which map the potential wintering areas. These include known and currently unrecognised wintering locations. Our maximum entropy model did not identify any new extensive candidate areas within the winter distribution, suggesting that most key sites are already known, but it did identify small sites on the coast of eastern Bangladesh, western Myanmar, and the Guangxi and Guangdong regions of China that may merit further investigation. As no extensive areas of new potential habitat were identified, we suggest that the priorities for the conservation of this species are habitat protection in important wintering and passage areas and reducing hunting pressure on birds at these sites.

Package-induced failures for BEOL interconnects in sub-45nm technology nodes have drawn attention to the great silicon and packaging integration challenges introduced by the weak mechanical properties of ULK-containing metallization elements. Empirical data and modeling studies for a range of silicon and packaging factors at 20nm node reveal fundamental insights into susceptibility to damage and approaches for recovery. Analysis of increase in degradation as BEOL layouts evolve to finer dimensions points to understanding of changes that will enable continued device scaling.

We present preliminary results on Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of three Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) and one infrared Quasi Stellar Object (IR QSO). The galaxies were observed at sub-kpc spatial resolution in lines of CO and 13CO, as well as in the continuum at 1.3mm. The moment maps show that the molecular gas in these galaxies is distributed in rotating disks with velocity gradients ranging from ~30 to 120 km s−1 kpc−1. Combined with archival CO J=3-2 data, the spatial distributions of the CO J=3-2/J=2-1 ratios shows clear variations across the galaxies. The brightness temperature of the overlap region in VV 114 is found to be lower than that in the nuclear region of VV 114E, suggesting that that the bulk of molecular gas in this region is sub-thermalized.

We present preliminary results from a study of the SEDs of a complete sample of 65 LIRGs from GOALS. The spectral shapes at λ > 10μm are similar, while the largest variations occur in the NIR (L1μm5μm/L⊙ ~ 1.0–0.01) and UV (L1μm0.12μm/L⊙ ~ 2.0–0.005). Using stellar population synthesis models to fit the UV–NIR continuum data, we derive stellar masses for the host galaxies of log (M*/M⊙) ~ 10.2–11.4 with a mean of ~ 10.8.

Summary
This chapter investigates the complex relationship of stroke with fungal pathogens like aspergillus, mucor, candida, cryptococcus and other fungi. Among fungal pathogens, aspergillus is most likely to present as a stroke or stroke-like syndrome. Pathologically there were multiple areas of cerebral infarction with thrombosis due to Aspergillus invasion of arteries. Like Aspergillus, Mucor species are angioinvasive and can cause stroke through, bland infarction, and vascular thrombosis. Candida is not an angioinvasive pathogen, and reports of stroke after candida infection are distinctly uncommon. Like candida species, cryptococcus is not angioinvasive. Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast. A variety of less common fungi that can rarely infect immunocompromised patients include fusarium (a septate mold), Trichosporon (a pathogenic yeast), paecilomyces, pseudallescheria, Scopulariopsis, and the endemic fungi (coccidioides immitis, histoplasma capsulatum). Reports of central nervous system (CNS) involvement or stroke like syndromes are limited with these less common fungi.
