We examined the prospective relations between a cultural risk factor, perceived racial discrimination (PRD), and subsequent negative affect and health behavior (smoking) in a panel of 889 African American children (part of the Family and Community Health Study). Cultural moderators (protective factors) of these relations were also examined. PRD was assessed six times from ages 10.5 (Wave 1) to 24.5 (Wave 6), and negative affect (anger and depressive symptoms) was assessed at Wave 2 (age 12.5) and Wave 6 (age 24.5). Results indicated that Wave 1 PRD predicted Wave 6 smoking, controlling for multiple factors related to smoking and/or PRD, including smoking at age 15.5. Structural equation models indicated that these relations between Wave 1 PRD and smoking were mediated by both early and later negative affect. The models also indicated that Wave 1 PRD had a direct impact on Wave 6 anger (assessed 14 years later), controlling for the effects of PRD on early affect. Cultural socialization was associated with lower rates of adolescent smoking, and it buffered the relation between PRD and Wave 6 anger. The impact of early PRD experiences along with suggestions for culturally informed interventions and preventive interventions that might buffer against early PRD effects are discussed.

The quality of prenatal maternal mental health, from psychological stress and depressive symptoms to anxiety and other nonpsychotic mental disorders, profoundly affects fetal neurodevelopment. Despite the evidence for the influence of positive mental well-being on health, there is, to our knowledge, no research examining the possible effects of positive antenatal mental health on the development of the offspring. Using exploratory bifactor analysis, this prospective study (n = 1,066) demonstrated the feasibility of using common psychiatric screening tools to examine the effect of positive maternal mental health. Antenatal mental health was assessed during 26th week of pregnancy. The effects on offspring were assessed when the child was 12, 18, and 24 months old. Results showed that positive antenatal mental health was uniquely associated with the offspring's cognitive, language and parentally rated competences. This study shows that the effects of positive maternal mental health are likely to be specific and distinct from the sheer absence of symptoms of depression or anxiety.

Cobalt doped ZnO (ZnO:Co) films with a 1 at% doping rate have been successfully grown on (100) oriented p type Si substrates by radiofrequency magnetron sputtering. Post annealing treatments at 973 K for various short periods have been carried out and structural, optical and electrical properties of the films have been investigated. Upon rapid annealing, the dopant distribution in the film has been found homogeneous. The annealing improves the (002) texture of the film and the mean column width increases with the annealing duration from 60 nm up to 95 nm. The lattice parameter of the ZnO:Co films decreases upon annealing and approaches that of bulk ZnO. The photoluminescence (PL) study reveals that the Co2+ ions can be excited directly or through a transfer mechanism from the matrix. The PL intensity decreases with the annealing time suggesting a diffusion process of the dopant impeding the Co2+ emission. At last, the electrical conductivity reaches values compatible with potential electroluminescent applications of the ZnO:Co films.

Summary
Introduction
This chapter is devoted to the description of the interaction of polarized light with carrier spins and nuclear spins in semiconductor quantum dots. A historical starting point of these original experiments is the close analogy between quantum dot physics and atomic physics. In 1952, Brossel Kastler and Winter investigated mercury atoms in a weak magnetic field which splits the electron Zeeman levels. By irradiation of the atoms with circularly polarized light the authors could selectively populate one of the electron Zeeman levels [9]. This process has since been referred to as optical pumping. Soon afterwards the first optical pumping of carrier spins in a semiconductor was reported [31]. The initial pumping of spin-orientated conduction electrons in silicon induced by polarized light led to polarization of the nuclear spins of the atoms of the silicon lattice via the hyperfine interaction. This dependence of the nuclear magnetization on the polarization of the absorbed light is at the heart of the experiments described in this chapter. A review of the nuclear spin effects in bulk semiconductors can be found in [37]. The hyperfine interaction between carrier and nuclear spins gives even more spectacular results in quantum dots as shown in pioneering work on optically detected nuclear magnetic resonance ODNMR [23] and orientation of one spin species will have a strong influence on the other [25, 7]. Below we detail a selection of the most remarkable consequences of nuclear spin physics on the optical properties of quantum dots.

1.3 $\mu $m room temperature emitting multiple-stacked InAs/GaAs(001) quantum dots (QDs) are grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and investigated by photoluminescence (PL), polarized photoluminescence (PPL), photoluminescence excitation (PLE), time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and atomic force microscopy AFM. The PL measurement shows that two distinct sets of QDs coexist in the sample. The AFM image of the tenth QDs layer not only confirms the bimodal size distribution of the QDs but also shows that the large QDs are elongated along the [1-10] direction. The former structural information has been verified by PPL. Through the excitation density dependent PL and the detection energy dependent PLE we have evidenced two kinds of QDs within the small size dots population: isolated QDs and laterally coupled QDs with vertically coupled large size QDs. The large size dot population is found to possess a long PL decay time confirming that they are electronically coupled. In the meanwhile the PL decay time of the small QDs is found to be similar to that of single layer QDs. These results would help improve understanding some fundamental properties of an interesting structure for optoelectronic applications.

We discuss the fabrication and characterization of undoped hydrogenated and crystallized silicon thin films grown by reactive magnetron sputtering at growth rate of about 2 Å/s and at a temperature as low as 100 °C for various ratios of hydrogen dilution in the gas phase mixture (argon + x% hydrogen). Combined infrared absorption and Raman scattering spectroscopy techniques as well as conventional and high resolution transmission electron microscopy and stress measurements are used to fully characterize the films. In this temperature range, a minimum hydrogen dilution of 30% with respect to the plasma mixture (argon + hydrogen) is necessary to produce nanocrystalline films with crystalline volume fraction of about 65%. Moreover, these films are found to promote much lower stress intensity than those reported in previous works. The nature and strength of the stresses are dependent on the film microstructure.
