The spatial distribution of in situ sessile organisms, including those from the fossil record, provides information about life histories, such as possible dispersal and/or settlement mechanisms, and how taxa interact with one another and their local environments. At Nilpena Ediacara National Park (NENP), South Australia, the exquisite preservation and excavation of 33 fossiliferous bedding planes from the Ediacara Member of the Rawnsley Quartzite reveals in situ communities of the Ediacara Biota. Here, the spatial distributions of three relatively common taxa, Tribrachidium, Rugoconites, and Obamus, occurring on excavated surfaces were analyzed using spatial point pattern analysis. Tribrachidium have a variable spatial distribution, implying that settlement or post-settlement conditions/preferences had an effect on populations. Rugoconites display aggregation, possibly related to their reproductive methods in combination with settlement location availability at the time of dispersal and/or settlement. Additionally, post-settlement environmental controls could have affected Rugoconites on other surfaces, resulting in lower populations and densities. Both Tribrachidium and Rugoconites also commonly occur as individuals or in low numbers on a number of beds, thus constraining possible reproductive strategies and environmental/substrate preferences. The distribution of Obamus is consistent with selective settlement, aggregating near conspecifics and on substrates of mature microbial mat. This dispersal process is the first example of substrate-selective dispersal among the Ediacara Biota, thus making Obamus similar to numerous modern sessile invertebrates with similar dispersal and settlement strategies.

Objective
To describe the ‘Smart Lunch Box’ intervention and provide details on feedback from the participants on the acceptability and usability of the intervention materials.
DesignA cluster randomised controlled trial, randomised by school. English schools were stratified on percentage free-school-meals eligibility and attainment at Key Stage 2. A ‘Smart Lunch Box’ with supporting materials and activities on healthy eating was delivered to parents and children via schools in the intervention group. Feedback forms containing information on a total of fifteen intervention items were filled out by the parents and/or children participating in the intervention and were collected after each of the three phases of the intervention.
SettingEighty-nine primary schools in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, randomly selected; forty-four schools in the intervention arm.
SubjectsA total of 1294 children, aged 9–10 years, took part in the trial. Of the 604 children in the intervention arm, 343 provided feedback after at least one of the three phases.
ResultsA median of twelve items out of a total of fifteen were used by responders. The two intervention items most likely to be used were the individual food boxes and the cooler bags. Whether a participant liked an item significantly affected whether they used it for all items except the cooler bag, fruity face and individual food boxes.
ConclusionsPractical intervention items aimed at parents are likely to be used in the longer term and therefore may be appropriate for use in an intervention strategy to improve packed lunches.

Summary
Introduction
Processes of natural bioremediation of lignocellulose involve a range of organisms, but predominantly fungi (Hammel, 1997). Laboratory studies on the degradation of lignocellulose, including wood, straw, and cereal grains, have focused mainly on a few fungal species that grow well in the laboratory and can be readily manipulated in liquid culture to express enzymes of academic interest. Our current understanding of the mechanism of lignocellulose degradation stems from such studies. Although some of these enzymes have economic potential in a range of industries, for example pulp and paper manufacture and the detergent industry, it is frequently expensive and uneconomic to use them for bioremediation of pollutants in soils and water columns. In the successful commercial bioremediation processes developed, whole organisms have been used in preference to their isolated enzymes (Lamar & Dietrich, 1992; Bogan & Lamar, 1999; Jerger & Woodhull, 1999).
Most fungi are robust organisms and are generally more tolerant to high concentrations of polluting chemicals than are bacteria, which explains why fungi have been investigated extensively since the mid-1980s for their bioremediation capacities. However, the species investigated have been primarily those studied extensively under laboratory conditions, which may not necessarily represent the ideal organisms for bioremediation. Fungi in little-explored forests of the world, for example tropical forests, may yet prove to have even better bioremediation capabilities than the temperate organisms currently studied, exhibiting more tolerance to temperature and specialist environments.

Oxalate decarboxylase activity was present in liquid culture medium and mycelium of Agaricus bisporus. Enzyme activity in the mycelium peaked at two-weekly intervals after primary growth phase and into secondary metabolism, with activity peaks in the medium occurring 7 d later than in the mycelium. The enzyme was partially purified and had two isozymes with pIs 3.0 and 3.4. Characterization of the protein by SDS–PAGE and Western blotting against a polyclonal antibody raised to oxalate decarboxylase from Collybia velutipes showed a major protein band of 64 kDa. Oxalate decarboxylase was also detected in the fruit body up to the cup stage of development. The pH optimum for the enzyme was 3.6 and temperature optimum was 35 °C.
