Fluid flow in biological tissues is important in both mechanical and biological contexts. Given the hierarchical nature of tissues, there are varying length scales at which time-dependent mechanical behavior due to fluid flow may be exhibited. Here, spherical nanoindentation and microindentation testings are used for the characterization of length scale effects in the mechanical response of hydrated tissues. Although elastic properties were consistent across length scales, there was a substantial difference between the time-dependent mechanical responses for large and small contact radii in the same tissue specimens. This difference was far more obvious when poroelastic analysis was used instead of viscoelastic analysis. Overall, indentation testing is a fast and robust technique for characterizing the hierarchical structure of biological materials from nanometer to micrometer length scales and is capable of making quantitative material property measurements to do with fluid flow.

Donati's comet was one of the most spectacular astronomical events of the nineteenth century. Its extended sword-like tail was a spectacular sight that inspired several literary and artistic representations. Traces of Donati's comet are found in popular magazines, children's books, collection cards, and household objects through the beginning of the twentieth century.

We review the theory of the formation and gravitational collapse of magnetized molecular cloud cores, leading to the birth of T Tauri stars surrounded by quasi-Keplerian disks whose accretion is driven by the magnetorotational instability (MRI). Some loss of magnetic flux during the collapse results typically in a dimensionless mass-to-flux ratio for the star plus disk of λ0 ≈ 4. Most of the mass ends up in the star, while almost all of the flux and the angular momentum ends up in the disk; therefore, a known mass for the central star implies a computable flux in the surrounding disk. A self-contained theory of the MRI that drives the viscous/resistive spreading in such circumstances then yields the disk radius needed to contain the flux trapped in the disk as a function of the age t. This theory yields analytic predictions of the distributions with distance ϖ from the central star of the surface density Σ(ϖ), the vertical magnetic field Bz(ϖ), and the (sub-Keplerian) angular rotation rate Ω (ϖ). We discuss the implications of this picture for disk-winds, X-winds, and funnel flows, and we summarize the global situation by giving the energy and angular-momentum budget for the overall problem.

The wetting of cylindrical monofilaments by liquid polymers is a problem of much scientific and technological importance. In particular, the characterization of the physicochemical nature of interfaces is a key problem in the field of advanced fibrous composites. The macroscopic regime contact angle, which reflects the energetics of wetting at the solid-liquid interface, is difficult to measure by usual methods in the case of very thin cylindrical fibers.
In the present article a numerical method is proposed for the calculation of macroscopic regime contact angles from the shape of a liquid droplet spread onto a cylindrical monofilament. This method, which builds on earlier theoretical treatments by Yamaki and Katayama [1], and Carroll [2], very much improve the accuracy of the contact angle obtained. Experimental results with high-strength carbon, para-aramid, and glass fibers, are presented to demonstrate the high degree of accuracy of the method proposed.
